Where do you consider to be the middle of nowhere in CO? Are you going to Boulder? I went to CU. Boulder is great.
About half an hour north of a place called Alamosy. Yeah, I was on my way to Boulder to visit some friends. Great city.
This happens with Deer a lot obviously, but an Elk crash can definitely kill you. One time in Yellowstone it started to snow just as we set up camp and you couldn't really see anything...a big moose was running from something and charged right through our camp site...It would have sucked to get run over by it. Also saw a grizzly in the river eating a fish...Grizzly sighting are pretty rare.
It's sad that the Elk died, a lot of times they just jump up and are fine. Deer too. Especially in Stag season. They just look at you and mosey back into the woods. hit him side on, as in he was facing the side of the road, doing about 65mph. He was thrown about five or six yards into a ditch. He might have been killed instantly, but he was definitely dead by the time the cops arrived.

Alamosa, where the sand dunes are? By the New Mex border? That's a pretty cool National Park. You can sled down them like if they were snow. Well, at 65 you could probably have gotten killed. So maybe you will be a new man now with a whole new outlook. Don't sweat the small stuff and such. Elk meat is actually pretty popular. It's gamey.
Where did you eat on Pearl Street? Did you see a place called "The Kitchen" by any chance? Or that Irish pub Conor O'Neills?

Last night, in the middle of nowhere in Colorado I hit a 500lb elk with my rental car. The elk's dead and the car is totaled, but thanks to the help of some kind passers-by I'm fine, and the rental company are sending me a replacement car later today.
We drove up from Denver to Scottsbluff, Wounded Knee, Badlands and Mt. Rushmore last summer. On the way back we were caught in a Buffalo stampede in the Custer State Park... Fortunately they just weaved around the car, except the last straggler who licked the wing-mirror. Animals over there certainly pack a punch.

I've had to tell the story a few times over the last week or so, finally had time to put it all down on paper (well, metaphorical paper) http://tetsujin1979.blogspot.ie/2017/08/on-dark-desert-highway.html

Is there anything more laughable than the football push and shove which usually ends up as nothing but posturing (very rarely a head butt often feigned). The teams all run in squaring up to each other with nothing more than handbags on show. Now if is rugby or ICE HOCKEY, then watch out for the flailing punches but the football ones - they're a joke.

Raise your fist in football and it's a straight red, in rugby it's "part of the game"

Today was a proud day for me. I don't care if someone see's this a bit of an ego trip posting here, I am proud of it. I handed in €775 to Pieta House North-West as proceeds from an EP I released just over a year ago. Written, recorded, all instruments played, edited, produced and all in between, I done the whole lot and I am damn proud of it.
Still with another 50 or 60 CD's to sell, and online donations still coming in drips and drabs, I'd love to see it reach €1,000 yet. But handing over that money today was a brilliant moment and I had my family there with me making it that bit better, especially my two young fellas, who may never have seen that moment had I not been pushed into counselling a handful of years ago by my partner.
Today has truly been a great day.

Congrats on being able to give back Nigel, very admirable. Impressed you can play all the instruments...Prince used to do that. What kind of music is it?

Thanks man, I'd love to have even a tenth of the talent Prince had. Music is sort of a laid back alternative style. I suppose you could give it a listen at https://nigelhegarty.bandcamp.com/releases

Is there anything more awkward than rejecting the (much) younger sister of a bouncer at a late night bar that you frequent?
Answers on a postcard.
I did buy her a drink, and I'm very frugal with money.
I no longer go to the aforementioned off licence (several pages back) in case you want an update.
Make of that what you Will.

Postcard reads:
Yeah. Getting banned from a football forum for posting a snuff video is considerably more awkward. You tight fisted, attention seeking weirdo.

A moan from a recent trip abroad. We all know that hand baggage space is tight on Ryanair flights. Two people in the seat ahead of me put up their cases side-ways so that they filled up the overhead hold even though there should have been room for 2 more bags. One of the vertically challenged cabin crew had to stand on the edge of a seat and readjust the bags to allow others put in their bags. Unbelievably selfish or just thoughtless or both.

Slow drivers in outside lanes - I know three separate people who are guilty of this and told me stories about these dangerous drivers who overtook them on the inside and then pulled in front and jammed on their brakes. Happened to all three and none had any idea as to why the irate other drivers behaved like that. Moral of the story - if you're held up, no point tail-gating or swerving. The slow driver has no idea why you are doing it.

Garlic sauce works wonders. I don't understand why mayonnaise is so terrible with pizza.
11am pizza is the rest of last nights pizza. Few slices not eaten, stick it on the George Foreman grill the next morning and you've deliciousness all over again.

That picture of cookies reminds me....In Colorado now at Weddings not only is there the usual open bar but now there is a weed bar with friendly weed bartenders in weed bow ties who will hook you up with whatever flavor and potency of Marijuana you like....I haven't since Bubba was President but it seems very popular. Wonder what the couple gets charged for something like that? Just another check written for the FOTB!

The "Buy your spouse a car for the Holidays" advertising trope on TV is the strangest trope. I have never heard of anyone doing that ever and yet it's on every single holiday car commercial all November and December, over and over again ad nauseum.
Look Honey! I got us a $700 a month car payment for Christmas! Also how do they think you can surprise the person on Xmas morning with a new car wrapped in a bow. Good luck getting a car delivered on Xmas morning.

It's amazing they have been together 41 years. My entire lifespan.
I saw something on Twitter the other day, without revealing your age (which I don't think really matters) what would be something from your younger years you could tell a young person today that they would never have heard of or experienced? Obviously cell phones and the like. But I was telling my niece the other day that as a young teen, I would have to take the phone (with a cord of course) and drag the cord under the door of my room to get some privacy. She was amazed. Seems amazing now. Also Blockbuster video...it's only been closed for like 10 years or something but it seems a life time away. Going to the store to rent a clunky VHS tape and having to bring it back the next day....Seeing the "staff picks"......the separate porn section behind a curtain....people renting porn in public in a town they live in, the teen behind the counter seeing the title they picked??? i would NEVER have had the stones for that!!!

I used to work in an adult shop in Letterkenny. Small town, only just over 20,000 people, so was likely to see people I knew coming in there from time to time. Porn DVD's and magazines still sell, and rent, or at least they did as of around 5 years ago. Sometimes selling to people who I knew, but didn't seem to recognise me, was particularly awkward.
