You know the worst thing about writing the best album in the history of the universe ever in the whole wide world? Having to actually write the damn lyrics..jesus feckin christ, trying to brainstorm for things to write about sucks...especially since quitting smoking.

Nothing like shooting an unarmed naked drug addict eating another mans face to make news headlines and be called a hero.

Keep forgetting it's a work day in Ireland - meanwhile it's 23 in Moscow and this afternoon I've a Georgian wedding to go to and tomorrow to recover. But then go to Tajikistan for 2 days, which slightly worries me.

Nice to see the Germans wearing green today against Switzerland. Still honoring the Irish being the first team to play em after WWII. Super awesome.

Is it true that Socrates was buried wearing his UCD jersey?

Is that tennis played by monkeys or tennis played using a monkey as the ball?

It's important that we know.

stann
26/06/2012, 3:03 PM
They tried it using a monkey as a ball only the once years ago, didn't work too well. The monkey wasn't too happy either.
On the plus side, though, his somewhat excessive over-reaction subsequently became the inspiration for the knife fights.

Why do commentators say defeat to when it is defeat by and loss to? Why does this annoy me? Why does Bill O'Herlihy annoy me. Why do I follow teams that will NEVER win anything (other than the Celtic Cup). Why are traffic lights green and red? Why did someone who sold Milltown become President of the FAI? Why am I asking so many questions when I should be working?

To your comment, computer says not completely. (http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/)

Brigham Young University's Coca Corpus (of 450 million words) of American English reports 113 usages of 'defeat by' compared with 107 usages of 'defeat to'. Definitely not enough of a difference to suggest that 'defeat to' is incorrect.

But the same university also helps house the British National Corpus (http://corpus.byu.edu/bnc/) which shows totals of 292 instances versus 34 for the former and the latter.

So, both acceptable in US English, but less so in British English (though 34 instances is enough to argue that the usage isn't 'wrong').

Yours,

Pedantor.

I think that's technically correct (like "that family is rich") but it does sound weird.

Technically... but I prefer our way of pluralising groups.

In your example you could say "that family are rich" also.

Our way? After 800 years it appears you have developed Stockholm syndrome :p Break free from the chains of your colonial tormentor and rebel by referring to multiple people acting as a unit in the singular. What do you think the American Revolution was about?
