I can't understand clubs settling for half a stadium. They all end up regretting it afterwards.

Very little choice for Cork but to now to settle for half a stadium. That's all that's left.

God, I really hope it's insured! A storm blowing the roof off the stand nearly bankrupt Stoke in the '80s. The hit to attendances from losing an entire stand is going to really affect the club in either case

Could be wrong, but I'd say this isn't covered by insurance. It'll go down as an 'act of god'.

The damage at the Cross is to the Derrynane Road Stand, which is actually the lowest of the four stands.
For anyone unfamiliar with the venue, this is the stand opposite the main Donie Forde Stand.
At least half of the stand seems to have collapsed, meaninghealth and safety will surely rule out the entire stand in case of potential further structural damage for (at least) our last two games of the season.
Not even sure at this point if it's feasible to play our two remaining games at the Cross with just the Derrynane out of bounds.
As you know, the MFA are in charge of the ground not CCFC; God knows when it will be eventually sorted!
The loss is likely to impact on the club's revenue in a big way in 2018 unless there is rapid action undertaken to repair the damage when the season ends.

I don't know - the capacity of the rest of the ground is over 6000, which would still be enough to accommodate most City games - besides, 24 hours later, the badly damaged part has been taken away and 3/4 of it seems to be intact, which means it'll probably be a matter of inspecting and, at most some reinforcement. If not, just take down the rest of the roof and let it be an uncovered stand for next year.

Capacity is down to about 5,700 without Derrynane I believe.

By the way, well done to the MFA for getting Turner Cross ready for the game last night. Incredible achievement to stage a match so soon after so much damage.

We apparently had an offer of Musgrave Park from Munster Rugby if we needed it, which was a really nice touch.

Why is the opening capacity at the revamped Brandywell so low ? (3700) There are surely plans to increase the capacity above that? If Derry are challenging for title, big cup/European games they'd get double that figure in the gate.

That's the seating capacity I think. There's going to be space either side of the new stand for terracing as I understand it to take capacity to around 4,200

In fairness clubs don't have a choice. You ave to lay the hand you've been dealt. You could say that ye have settled for a few foundations for the last 4 years.

Honestly, prefer having it dragged out and getting an entire stadium done rather than settling for a Lissywollen job or the colourful wind tunnel in Tallaght.

I've nothing against Tallaght. It's a cracking stadium with probably the best facilities in the league within what's there, but it's half finished.

I had understood that it was being built on the mountains end.The atmosphere
In the big games down the shopping centre end should be brilliant.
In fairness to SDCC they really get what a top class sports facility can do for a community.Hopefully Dublin City Council can learn from them.

It is being built down the car park (south) end. Should be done for the start of next season as well.

Sorry my mistake mixing up by north and south. Mountain end.
Piece in Irish Indo today, and from local media that Kenny indicating Dundalk will be releasing news of the redevelopment of Oriel Park.
We've heard this many times before from the club, but it would appear now they have finally got a lot of the background work in place to kick things off.
We shall see.

He mentioned something similar on LOI weekly today as well. Not in any detail though, just that there would be news soon. I think. I may have not been paying full attention.

I doubt it, especially with the early season start too. Dosen't make a difference, it will be empty anyway.

Are they putting a roof on the new stand? And if so will it cover the front half of the seats.

From the graphics i looks like its the same build style as the east stand so it should go over all but maybe the first two or three rows

Hopefully it'll cover all of the rows. There seems to be a problem in Ireland with building a roof on a stand the only covers 3/4 of the rows. Croke Park, the Aviva and Tallaght have this issue. I can't understand how in a country that gets so much rain that the roof on new stands isn't designed to cover all the seats.
sbgawa
27/10/2017, 1:05 PM
the prevailing wind is from the South generally so the roof will from a practical perspective cover most of the seats,
the problem in the other two stands generally is the rain is coming in from the sides (although the roof doesn't go out far enough anyway.
I agree with you considering we get so much rain we should be building roofs that go well out.

Probably worried about casting shadows and the grass growing too, at least on one side of the pitch. Primarily trying to squeeze out as much for the money though.

According to the Kildare Nationalist - "The damage was limited to a club office and shop. No one was in the premises at the time."

Possibility that Institute will be joining Derry in the new Brandywell.
I'd say they'd prefer the St. Columb's Park option though.

Are they currently playing home games in Wilton Park? Would it be an option to have a couple of pop up stands built there for them?

They need a longer term future, with an eye on returning to the Irish League Premiership.
This shows the folly of the council pouring money into refurbishing a stadium that's in the wrong part of Derry. One in a more neutral area would have worked for both clubs, helped both out, and given the council some additional revenue to-boot

As they're looking for a new long term home, with an eye on being back in the top division again, it'll probably come down to which facility they can use ongoing and will meet the requirements for the IL's top division.
All that Sport NI money that was spent on their Riverside Stadium, including a new stand only a few years ago, is starting to look like a very poor public spending decision now.

TBF, the flooding of a few months ago really was exceptional. No-one expected the knotweed or the impossibility of insurance.
Without knowing anything about modern stadia structures, can a stand be moved these days? I know Derry bought a stand off Glentoran back in the day and sent in up to the Brandywell.

I'd disagree. The ground was built in a long-standing floodplain which had a history of flooding in the past.
It was given to the YMCA for use as sports pitches by a local farmer, specifically because it was low-value floodplain land of little use to him for animals and the like. The YMCA seem to have forgotten that over the years and proceeded to build a stadium on it.
The insurance issue is what happens when you take the risk of building on a floodplain and as the name suggests it floods.
Climate change is altering the rules of what 'expected' weather events are, so nothing should be getting built on floodplains like that.
As for the knotweed - it's been a known problem along the River Faughan for years.
On moving a stand - you could take the seats, the roof and its structure, but not the stuff underneath which is usually poured concrete. They could therefore salvage elements of it, but would still face major costs.
nigel-harps1954
29/11/2017, 4:28 PM
Surely the wee stands along either side of the pitch could be lifted and taken with them? There's not much to them.
The new stand is the really unfortunate cost here. Really impressive bit of building, and I don't think too much of it could be saved beyond the seating and roof, which in itself I suppose are costly enough, but so much concrete structure gone to waste.

Just short of €1million that stand development coast and then another 400k on floodlights, drainage ahem, the smaller covered seating areas etc. That money would have gon a long way to moving a city ground beyond phase 1 of umpteen phases.
