Paul, you first take the cynical position on Robbie, then you jump on the fence, trying to appear all liberal and fair minded.

Feel free to apologise immediately.
Anyway, whatever perving Geysir has been upto in a Supermarket chain is a bit off topic, to be honest.
Nevertheless, I will unreservedly apologise for any of my perverse actions, regardless of their location.

Btw where did i differ on what i initially said about robbies comments? I said I agreed with the article and referenced the point about the irish public leaning more to doyle than keane?

The devil's advocate is a cop out.
If you agree with the article as you say, then the tone of the article re Keane's comments is defined by
'Ireland's record goalscorer surely deserves the benefit of the doubt'

You had previously chosen the opinion
"To me it sounds like if keane doesn't get picked he will retire. Thats the not the petulant attitude to have serving your country."

I don't get Robbie Keane hate to be honest. I've always tried to watch matches he plays because he's lovely to watch when he's playing well. Started today and some of his footwork has been sublime. Almost would have had goal of the season after he set him self up in the last minute but the shot was miles off.

Why give out about a top striker? Compare him to Michael Owen who was lauded as the greatest thing since the 60's and now where is he?

Birmingham leading 1-0 in a poor game. Robbie couple of nice flicks but no service. West Ham will be in real trouble if they don't get something from this game. Keane subbed 75.

He did very little in the second half. Didn't agree with the substitution though. 3 identical strikers on, Keane's the only alternative to them.

Looks like he's out for the West Brom game

The 30-year-old will miss the game at The Hawthorns on Saturday with the calf injury that forced him out of Ireland’s 3-0 victory over Wales on Tuesday.
There are fears the former Wolves man could be set for a lengthy lay-off.
But he is definitely out of Saturday’s fixture as the injury is assessed.
Hope he's not out too long.

Worrying if so. I hope keane isn't one of those who keeps getting minor injuries as he gets older.

Robbie Keane out for 6 weeks with a calf injury.

So no playing time between now and Macedonia at Home, well very little if the 6 weeks is correct. Step up Long? Walters? Keogh?....Stokes? or perhaps Duffer?

If he's not match fit of course.

Robbie has a habit of scoring on his first game back - a bit of injury with light a fire in his belly I'm sure. (As long as it's not literally a fire in his belly.)

An aside:

Heard today from a friend of mine in Scotland that Robbie was in a pub in Dublin yesterday before the Scotland v NI game. Apparently he fell in with a bunch of Scottish fans, signed autographs and posed for photo's, then paid for their lunch before he left.

Nice to know there are still a few decent people left playing the game. Whatever people say about Robbie, he seems to be one of them

Who do we think has played themselves into a starting position now in his absence? Long or Walters? Or even Best? Will Trap go on club form or what he sees in the few days training?

Doyle was very poor the other night and Walters did put in a decent shift but you would have to go with Long and Doyle.

tetsujin1979
11/02/2011, 8:41 AM
Long and Doyle would be the least risky, they'd be very familiar with each other's style of play, having played together at Reading
Walters/Best to come on for Doyle, but I don't think we've an obvious replacement for Long, unless McGeady comes into the middle?

lads it may not be as bad as reported...from West Ham forum, i read on sportinglife that he was to have a fitness test aswell. until the club confirms it we wont know how bad it is.

Robbie Keane could yet feature for West Ham as soon as tomorrow afternoon after it emerged this morning he will undergo a late fitness test on his injured calf ahead of the relegation battle with West Brom.

It had been thought the Republic of Ireland captain was set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines with a torn calf muscle. However, reports this morning have claimed that the striker will be given every opportunity by the West Ham medical team to prove his fitness and has not yet been ruled out of the clash at the Hawthorns.

West Ham will give a late fitness test to calf injury victim Robbie Keane before deciding whether to include him in their squad for tomorrow’s clash with relegation rivals West Brom.

Having Duff fit for once will be a big bonus.

Doyle is nailed on if fit but I think Best has the chance to play his way in too. It appears he will be fit for the weekend's fixture.

I suspect Trap will go for physicality. Opens the door for Best, since he's more of a goalscoring threat too. In fairness, it's nice to have so many strikers playing at a good level.

No, but he made damn sure he got his full pay packet from a club desperate for survival and in financial turmoil before agreeing to move from another club that hadn't played him regularly in over a year. I'm sick of this guy. He should take his millions of pounds and p-ss off, he's a total embarrassment to the Irish people.

I was just going to say the same thing. My God there is a lot of time for Duffer to see a black cat cross his path or accidentally get tackled by Declan Kidney while the two teams hold a dual workout at Aviva due to a scheduling snafu.

At first I was going to post "Well why not simply stay put at Spurs, no need to move" but now I see it, West Ham, the boys of '66 and all that, far better to ruin WH than Spurs - I salute you Robbie - evil genius - a credit to the Irish nation.

taken from the hammers forum, good news if it come true.

Robbie Keane could be back in time to face Stoke on the first weekend of March.
The Irish striker was initially thought likely to be sidelined for around six weeks after damaging a calf in the 1-0 home defeat against Birmingham.

However it is now thought that Keane - who scored on his Hammers debut in the 3-1 win at Blackpool a fortnight ago - could be back in time to face Stoke at the Boleyn on Saturday, 5th March - a fortnight earlier than first thought.

Elsewhere Victor Obinna has an outside chance of making his return against Burnley in the FA Cup this weekend.

The Nigerian striker - who, contrary to rumours, has not broken a foot - complained of a sore foot during international duty last week and, if not fit fot this weekend, should return the following week when Liverpool come to town.

Meanwhile Thomas Hitzlsperger - who made the first team squad for the first time when named as (an unused) sub against West Brom last weekend - is set to make his debut for West Ham in the FA Cup this weekend having finally recovered from injury.

Jack Collison, the other long term injury is still some weeks away from being fully fit despite being back in training.

Misleading headline, (http://irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/keanes-return-for-macedonia-tie-put-on-ice-145300.html) but the Examiner also reports he might be back for Macedonia after visiting some kind of ice chamber with Jack Collison. Sounds like a grand adventure.

Colbert Report, dont tell me you are taking pity on a top level club like West Ham and even suggesting Robbie is the bad guy for getting what he wanted from the individuals who run it? Please, come on now, these clubs are merciless in their culling of young players, season after season, those who are left standing after several years of this and go on to have careers are completely justified in getting all they can from these corporate entities, and thats what they are, and the players are just the product used to milk those fans for every penny from every angle, I see nothing wrong in a player getting all he can from them as as soon as he is of no use, they wont waste anytime rooting him out and moving him on. In Robbie they see goals, not a person, just the product they need, and are willing to pay for, and he knows what that is worth and can command in return.

On the other hand, for Ireland he has always turned up and done his best, his best being good enough to be our record scorer comfortably, he has never needed Ireland careerwise or financially either, it has been done because he is Irish and very proud to be, he spoke on Pat Kenny of how he worried his kid would not have an Irish accent growing up in London.

We need him more than he has ever needed us, still do, and I hope he will be around a good while yet.

Hmmmm. First let me say I think it's ridiculous to single out RK on this. However, the Secret Footballer's arguments are flawed to say the least.

For example, he says "There aren't many of us who would turn down the opportunity to leave a place of work and do the same job for somebody else if it meant a higher salary and a better standard of living for our families and ourselves". This is true on the face of it, but the whole point is that when someone has already earned in the region of 20-30 million pounds (or more!) over the course of 10-15 years, a higher salary would not mean a better standard of living, and conversely, a moderate pay cut is unlikely to result in a lower standard of living.

I can quite honestly say that if I was being marginalised in my job and as a result my whole career was grinding to a halt, I would be willing to take a pay cut in order to regain some job satisfaction. In fact, I once did exactly that. And needless to say, I didn't have millions in the bank at the time (or now for that matter!).

Keane got the best of both worlds by holding out for a deal that suited him financially while still ensuring regular top-flight football.

If it was a case of him staying like Shay or moving and he chose to stay, I'd understand the criticism, but in this case I really don't get it.

Yes, poor West Ham. The shame of Robbie Keane taking money out of the pocket of a British pornography "entrepreneur" and the owner of a lingerie company. He should look to be paid as little as possible by these upstanding (no pun intended) citizens.
