If anyone actually remembers that game against Malta, the first 45 minutes of that game was arguably the WORST Irish performance I've ever been unfortunate to witness. Standing on the terrace at Dalyer that night if someone had told me there's a 3 year-old in Tallaght who'll score 3 goals in the 2002 WC Finals I'd have smelt his breath for signs of intoxication.

If he scores a jammy winner against France, off the back of his arse while falling on his ear, I'll remember him fondly! :D
Couldn't care less how they go in!

[. Ok so he is our top scorer but when you compare his record to any other wold class striker its below average. )

First thing, Robbie Keane is not a striker in my books, he is more of a drop behind the front man i.e. Teddy Sheringham etc. So to compare his record to someone like Shevechenko would be unfair but we will deal in facts

Here is robbies Record

61 Caps 25 Goals, He has scored against, Germany, Spain, Holland, Yugoslavia, Israel, and scored 3 goals at the world Cup Finals

Michael Owen Caps 71 Goals 32 He too has scored in world Cups and Scored against Major Teams i.e. Argentina, Germany etc.

I would argue that Michael Owen is a predator, and out and out goalscorer who does not offer much outside the box Hence the reason a lot of the top teams did not buy. Also he is playing for England who win more games that they play the Ireland does. Therefore, Keanes record is outstanding as Michael Owen is regarded as one of the top goalscorers in the world. Robbies keanes Record for Ireland is just less than 1 goal in 2 games and anybody that knows football thats what all top goalscorers aim for.

His goals against Yugoslavia, Israel, Germany, , Saudi Arabia, None of them were lucky or jammy goas. The goal against Israel was pure class. I think you should go tothe doctor and check out your memory loss there as if you only remember jammy goals you are either not paying attention or have selective memory loss.

So Robbie has the same scoring ratio at International Level as Owen, Henry Shevchenko and Eto. But then again these are not top strikers. People should check their facts before they make stupid statements.

Am i not allowed have an opinion. Im not denying that he does score some good goals. What happened to Robbie Keane is that he was built up by the media and by the irish people too soon and he was put on a pedestal and hasnt lived up to the great expectations that were expected of him. Damien Duff didnt get half as much credit when he first started out and he is a quality player day in and day out. And if he is such a top striker why isnt he getting his game.

he isnt gettting his game because jermaine defoe is playing better than him at the moment . im not saying he is a super striker but it isnt fair comparing him to strikers in other countries cos we dont have that kind of luxury , anyway i couldnt be bothered arguing the point any further i just hope im sitting here this time next week with a smile on my face.

Of course you are allowed an opinion but it shoudl be backed up by concrete facts, which so far it has not been. You stated that is goal record did not stand up against the top strikers. Well it does. See the posts above. Its ok to have an opinion but only if there is some sort of logic and fact to it rather than a sense that Robbie Keane has been over hyped by the media and the Irish people. I tend not to pay much attention to the media or to what "the Irish people" have to say. Look at the facts and you wont go far wrong.

Look the way i feel about Robbie Keane is that he is not bad but there is better. Yeah his goal scoring record isnt bad im not denying that and he has scored important ones and i think his confidence is one of his best attributes i dont think anyone else would have scored that penalty against Spain during the match at the world cup in japan but I just dont see him as a good all around player, he is greedy, makes alot of mistakes and has a big f**cking mouth on him and lacks skill. I would love to see him score Wendnesday but i dont have the faith in him to score unless its jammyof course, only joking.

Well peadar maybe if the Irish Manager was a woman we wouldnt be worrying that much about France we would have beaten Israel twice already ;)

Ahh he has a big ****ing mouth on him, surely a reason to drop him or why he is not a top class player. YOu made a statement that has been proven to be rubbish by facts so now you come back with statements like he has a big ****ing mouth on him. Maybe he does, maybe he doen't who cares, the most important thing is that he scores and sets up goals. As long as he does these thing for Ireland everything else does not matter. He does this better than anyone else in and Ireland shirt Ever, Fact. Obviously you have a personal distaste for Robbie Keane and you have let this effect your footballing opinion of Robbie Keane.

Time for Robbie to reveal his gift

WHEN Tottenham manager Martin Jol chose to send Michael Dawson, a centre-back, up front last week in an effort to rescue a wilting cause against Chelsea, who knows what thoughts floated through Robbie Keane's head as the striker languished regretfully on the bench? Somewhat surprisingly, his future at White Hart Lane has survived the late and frantic manoeuverings of the transfer window. Right now, Keane must be wondering what future?

Beyond the musings of reporters and fans who support or castigate him, Keane has never been able to win over the constituency he needed in order for his career to flourish in line with his talent. Managers have signed him in a flush of enthusiasm, and then grown quickly frustrated as they watch him struggle to fit into their game-plans. The indulgence he gets with Ireland is a gift that has been denied to Keane at club level.

Since leaving Coventry it has been the story of his career. Marcello Lippi astonishingly brought him to Internazionale, fondly christened him 'Baby Irish' and returned him to England within four months. David O'Leary accepted him warmly at Leeds and then told him he was overweight. Without saying anything, Jol handed him the biggest insult of all.

Perhaps it was Keane's misfortune to arrive at Tottenham while the club was mired in a period of instability that mirrored his own career. Keane's three years at White Hart Lane have embraced four different managers and the thing that must crush him now is that just when Tottenham appear to be developing a team of genuine European aspirations, his role in their future looks seriously in doubt.

It is a predicament that perplexes those who have played with Keane and who have been touched by his effervescence and unquenchable spirit. Jason McAteer first remembers Keane from the US Cup in 2000. Two years earlier Keane had caused a stir when making his Ireland debut against Argentina in Lansdowne Road, but it was in America that he revealed his bubbly nature.

McAteer was reminded of his younger self. "He was a lively character. He was the life and soul, just a kid really. He was bold and brash and sometimes he had a little bit too much to say for himself. But sometimes you need that kind of attitude to be able to do the things he's done. Now he's established himself and those raw edges have worn off him. He's a player who does his talking with his feet now. His movement is unbelievable. He doesn't lose the ball and he never gives up."

Eight years ago he made his debut for Wolves in a Division One game against Norwich and, just as he would do on his Premiership debut for Coventry exactly two years later, Keane found the net twice. A few weeks later he banged two past Dean Kiely in a 2-0 victory over Bury. Before that Kiely had only heard snatches about Keane. Since then he has been one of the striker's greatest advocates.

Kiely remembers being asked about Keane and replying that he had the football world at his feet for a decade or more. That, he thinks, was six or seven years ago and why Keane has yet to fulfil his prophecy is a mystery the Charlton 'keeper is trying to unravel.

"Personally I think he's been hard done by," Kiely says. "I've seen Robbie at close quarters and when you see him turn up, put his boots on and train the way he does is enough for me. I find it really difficult to understand why he isn't embedded in the Tottenham side. I just think there are so many things going on in terms of what managers think that if Robbie isn't playing as much as he'd like it's not because he lacks enthusiasm or commitment. He doesn't lack anything."

The prevailing view in the game, though, is that Keane has flaws, serious enough to hinder his progression as one of English football's top strikers. The feeling at Tottenham is that he can't play alongside Jermaine Defoe who, at 22, has emerged as a serious challenger to Michael Owen as Wayne Rooney's partner up front for England. Had his proposed move to Everton gone through, Keane would have been taking a step down but, unquestionably, he would have been guaranteed regular football.

"It would be nice to see him settled week in week out," says McAteer. "He'll score goals. Unfortunately, managers use this rotation system and sometimes Robbie is the first player to suffer. I think he's the type of player who needs to play every week. He just seems to get better and better."

Why should Keane be the first to suffer when teams are rotated? "Because he doesn't really have a physical presence," McAteer says. "Himself and Defoe are similar. Managers like someone up front who's a bit of a presence and that's why Mido is up there for Spurs. He's better in the air than Robbie. Robbie gets lost in all this and gets pushed to one side. He gets a bit part rather than playing every week." If, in Jol's mind, it is a case of Keane against Defoe it isn't surprising that he would opt for the England striker.

The distance between them isn't that vast, though. Last season Keane scored 17 goals in 45 games which, considering he started fewer games, doesn't sit badly with Defoe's record of 22 in 44. The previous season Keane scored 18 goals in 41 games.

THERE are more prolific strikers, but Keane at least is consistent.

"The boy is a natural talent," says David Pleat, Keane's former manager at Tottenham. "He's very skillful and a terrific dribbler. He scores good goals rather than simple goals. The only problem Robbie has, you either cope with his talent or you don't. In other words, he falls between the main striker and the one who drops off. He's so enthusiastic he seeks the ball and he goes very deep when you just want his talent to be on the shoulder of the last defender, where he scares them with his skill."

Pleat was aware of Keane from an early age. John Jarman was his chief scout at Luton in the mid-'90s and knew Eddie Corcoran, the scout who sent Keane to Wolves. He was reminded of the precocious teenager a couple of years later by Sammy Chapman, chief scout at Leicester. "The boy's a gift," Chapman told Pleat. Twice as manager of Tottenham - when Keane left Wolves for Coventry and again when he left England for Italy - Pleat tried to bring him to White Hart Lane.

Of Keane, he says the usual things. He is a straight-forward boy who loves training and, in nearly every respect, is a manager's dream. If only Keane was a straight-forward player, he'd be the total package. "People after a while look at him and they're not sure," Pleat says. "They start changing their minds and now at Spurs he's going to be displaced by the looks of things."

When Keane knocked two past the Faroe Islands last October, he surpassed Niall Quinn's 21-goal record in nearly half as many appearances but, as Clinton Morrison will testify, what Irish players achieve wearing the green shirt, while hardly a hindrance, has never been a guarantee of rewards at club level. No less than his club career, Keane's performances for Ireland have borne close scrutiny.

You can read it two ways. While a record of 25 goals in 58 appearances looks good, the fact remains that Keane has scored the majority of his goals either in friendlies or against the lower ranked teams in international football. The last truly vital goals he scored came in the World Cup - a penalty against Spain and a last minute equaliser against Germany. Before that you have to go back to Holland in 2000 and Yugoslavia a year earlier.

In one sense, the charge is fair. In the games that matter Keane, as Ireland's main striker, has lacked a decisive touch in front of goal. However, in his defence, Keane has arguably grown up in a side that is markedly inferior to its ancestors. It is easy to imagine Keane flourishing among the talent Jack Charlton had at his disposal, easier still to imagine him profiting during the Eoin Hand era when Ireland played a game that would have suited his gifts.

However he has got there, Keane has reached a watershed. He is no longer the 'gift' that turned heads on training fields when he was a teenager. His career is entering its second act and what better way to raise the curtain on it than by scoring against one of the game's finest teams.

The football world isn't at his feet anymore. It's time Robbie Keane went out and grabbed it.

Class goal. Just saw it on Sky Sports this morning. Quality first touch, quality second touch, lovely shimmy & great shot. Did he skip his usual half-baked somersault effort? I hope so! Nice one Robbie.

It was interesting that he seemed to arrive late from a deep position, almost advanced midfield - there were plenty of his team-mates further forward - the type of goal Ireland rarely gets.

I only seen it on MOTD but was very impressed by what I seen, even appart from the goal. He had a decent Volley saved. At one point in the build up to his goal he ran to the half way line and demanded the ball from his teammate who was literally just a yard away from him. Great to see.

The touch he got to set himself up for the goal looked a bit flukey to me the first time I seen it but when I seen it from a different angle it was proper bo', I tell the!!!

To be honest, I think Robbie has been over confident about his (very good) ability.

Either Jol is playing mind games with robbie and doing us all a favour or he doesnt like Robbie. I hope it is the former and he works on robbies game. Jol is doing him the world of good making him think about football on the bench. It seems to focus his mind better than giving him automatic start.

The main problem is with both strikers needing to work off a big man. I dont know if Jol can square that circle. I hope Robbie fixes his problems with his game and its not just a short term thing. He is a player with fantastic ability.

Yeah, from what I saw of the game on Saturday he looked very hungry. He demanded the ball and seemed determined to make things happen. It was an indication of Robbie's capabilities when he puts his mind to it. I have a funny feeling that Martin Jol may be the best thing that ever happened Robbie. Despite what everyone says, it must be remembered that Robbie is over three years at Spurs and has one of the most impressive gaols per game ratios in Europe during that period. Perhaps all the criticism he took after the France game has stirred Robbie into action. I hope so.

Spurs duo get rare chance together
19/09/2005 - 18:44:18

Tottenham boss Martin Jol will pair strikers Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane together against Grimsby in tomorrow night’s Carling Cup second-round tie.

Keane was Spurs’ saviour on Saturday when he came on to score a dramatic equaliser to earn a share of the spoils against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The Republic of Ireland marksman has played second fiddle to England striker Defoe all season and, even following the suspension of Egyptian striker Mido, Keane’s return has been blocked by new signing Grzegorz Rasiak.

Keane’s strike spared the blushes of Defoe who missed a first-half penalty but now the Irishman is set for a place alongside him as Rasiak is cup-tied for the clash against the League Two leaders at Blundell Park.

Jol paid tribute to Keane – who is beginning to earn something of an unwanted ‘super-sub’ reputation at White Hart Lane – and insisted the Irishman still has a big future at the club despite interest from Everton, Newcastle, and Villa.

Jol said: “We can play Defoe and Keane together and they do play marvellous football but, in English football, you do need someone who is good with his head too.

“Jermain is scoring some very good goals and Robbie is playing in a similar position so it’s difficult.

“I am always happy when Robbie comes on and he is such an important part of the squad.”

Keane would not be drawn on his situation apart from admitting, like every other player, he prefers to play regular first-team football.

Instead, he preferred to focus on the team spirit that brought them back into the game against Villa and which will hopefully start them on a run in the Carling Cup against Grimsby.

Spurs fell behind early to James Milner’s fine strike before Keane struck the leveller 12 minutes from the end.

“It was a difficult game and I thought Villa played ever so well,” reflected Keane. “We showed a lot of character to come back and we could have nicked it in the end but overall, we were happy enough to come away with a point. It’s a tough place to go and we’ve found that out over the last few seasons.”

Spurs have been rocked by the news Anthony Gardner could be out for up to two months following the thigh injury he sustained against Villa.

Jol confirmed: “It is sad for Anthony because he has been doing very well but it looks a bad one. Fortunately, we have Goran Bunjevcevic as cover for Ledley King and Nourredine Naybet while Stephen Kelly and Tom Huddlestone can fill in if necessary.

“It have told the players it won’t be easy at Grimsby and we’ll be travelling there with a great deal of respect.

“They are top of the league, a hard-working side with good players like Michael Reddy who is scoring goals.”

Grimsby boss Russell Slade is relishing the prospect of taking on Spurs after his side surged to the top of League Two with a 3-0 win over bottom club Torquay on Saturday.

Slade said: “It’s a fantastic occasion for us and everyone is really looking forward to it.

“It is a chance for the players to go out and express themselves against a team of international stars and our main aim is to give a good account of ourselves. We can look forward to having a go at Tottenham. It’s great going into the Spurs game having won a match.”

Town’s two-goal hero against Torquay, Michael Reddy, believes they can enjoy the game against Spurs without any pressure.

Reddy said: “It would have been a bit of a blow if we hadn’t got a good result ahead of the game against Spurs. But we can now all go into that looking forward to it.

“We are top of the league now and the only way is up hopefully. The gaffer was obviously delighted about it but we have just got to try and keep this run going.

“Hopefully we can remain unbeaten for a while and enjoy the game against Tottenham.”

If he had scored against Russia in the 4-2 away loss he would have broken the Irish record for scoring in consecutive games having scored in the 3 previous internationals (Germany, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Finland)

In fairness, we're talking about a consecutive run of goals from three years ago. Has he done it recently? We'll need him to produce against the Swiss more than ever, a repeat of his performance against France wouldn't be acceptable.

Martin Jol has described his Tottenham side's shock Carling Cup first round defeat to Grimsby as the lowest point of his spell in charge of the club.
Spurs were knocked out by the League Two leaders after Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala smashed home an 89th minute volley from the edge of the area.

"This is definitely my worst moment since coming here," said Jol.

"This must be one of the biggest upsets in the Carling Cup but that's what you can expect losing to a team like that."

Jol, whose side have scored just one goal in their last five games, blamed strikers Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane for failing to make an impact up front.

It is a great night for the town, the club, supporters and players

Grimsby boss Russell Slade

"We aren't scoring goals, and we don't look like scoring goals, which is even worse and is not good enough," added Jol.

"You know that if they get a free-kick or a corner that they can score and that's what happened.

"But we knew that beforehand and you have to make the difference up front. Sometimes we looked a bit immature.

"If you play against big players like they have, then you need to move quick and use your extra mobility.

"Our best player was Aaron Lennon and he is 18, which says it all. I'm a bit angry. When you are a Premiership side you have to win these games."

Let's be honest, Grimbsy seemed to want it much more than us

Grimsby manager Russell Slade was understandably delighted with the result and felt his side were worth the victory.

Slade said: "The players were tremendous. It is a great night for the town, the club, supporters and players.

"We have worked so hard this season and we deserved it.

"The last thing I needed was extra-time. I wanted the game over quickly but to get a goal in the last five minutes was ideal."

Kalala added: "I am just happy for the team. We worked so hard in this game.

"Every time I hit a ball they go over the top but this time I hit the target and I am happy for that."

Watched the first half and Keane did the usual, too many little flicks and kept running off-side...

Whats wrong with this man can he ever have a a few good games in a row... :(

And don't forget acting the victim and moaning to the ref when things don't go his way  .I don't think Robbie has improved as a player over the years at all and I don't think he'll get any better than what we see at the moment.
