View Full Version : Robbie Keane
Excuse me? Mind your manners. I know this for a pure fact. If you bothered to look up the co-efficients and understand them you wouldn't make a post like that.
fair enough but that just goes to show the way the game is run seeding woeful teams like celtic it saddens me :(

Over the last 5 years from which the co-efficient is drawn Celtic have beaten Bordeaux, Ajax, Juventus, Porto, Rosenborg, Blackburn, Celta Vigo, Stuttgart, Liverpool, Boavista, Lyon, Anderlecht, Barcelona, Shaktar and drawn another two times with Barca and drawn with AC Milan, drawn with Bayern Munich as well as having won a few other games against minnows. One of these seasons included a run to the UEFA Final, another to the quarter final, plus qualification for the CL 3 times. They don't make these things up.

Co-efficients don't deal with opinions or circumstances. They deal with facts and results. However two seasons ago Celtic very narrowly lost out on qualifying for the 2nd round of the CL and reached the UEFA quarter finals knocking out Barca along the way. Last year was pretty poor however Celtic did only lose to Barca and Milan with late goals and could have beaten Milan at home. Things have gotten a bit stale at Celtic but a new manager has come and no one knows how much funds are available to him yet.

The last quote was a bit mischievous , hinting that he thinks Strachan is better than Jol. What he actually said was something like "I said years ago that Gordon was the best manager I played for" i.e., before he played for Jol.
Still, I'd forgotten he'd played under Strachan before & this adds credibility to the suggestion Robbie could be at Celtic soon, esp. as he only has one year remaining.

how many goals has Robbie scored now and how many caps does he have ?
I think the midget Owen has 70 caps and 31 goals.. he is going for the half century.
would robbie ever manage 50 goals ? It would be a great international record..

Not too sure what caps hes on, but if he hit 50 goals, by that time i reckon he'd have the caps record in the bag aswell, that would take some beating !

59 Caps and 24 goals in 7 years.

does 24 include the goal against Celtic ? I thought it was more like 25.
Well his best years are ahead of him... I can see him getting to 40 goals but it would be some record to get 50.
I reckon Robbie will defintely get over the 100 caps unless he has some tradgic injury.
Very frustrating the other night though, the fact that he seems to need 5 or 6 chances before he puts one away. At least he keeps trying.

I'd have to agree with you there, he is very frustrating to watch especially at Landsdowne. He'll miss the easy chances and score the difficult ones. Best option we have though!

14 goals in 40 caps under McCarthy.
10 goals in 20 caps under Kerr (5 of those goals in competition which is good to see).

robbie has done well so far to get 24. I reckon he can get another 4 or 5 goals in this WCQ against faroes and cyrus. Clinton is doing a lot better in this WCQ though

When Robbie burst onto the international seen all those years ago i thought he was the best thing since Pele(i was only a kid at the time) the last game i went to see which was Ireland vs. Faroe Islands, robbie scored 2 but he missed so many chances it became annoying to watch.
Robbie is a great player who is hard working but likes to moan when he wants. I think he will get near to or over 40 and he will do brilliantly to get that 50 but i cant see it unless he puts away those easy chances.
Bye the way......Robbies goal against Holland in that friendly lasy year was top class. just thought i'd ad that.
It's funny alright. Robbie does seem to miss an awful lot of chances. But his goals to game ratio for Ireland is top class, and he notched a decent ratio for Spurs this season.
So does this mean he gets more chances than others?? Every time I see Robbie he has 2 or 3 good chances. It's all down to his movement, I reckon. Can't be explained by pace, that's for sure.

Yeah, he certainly gets into positions that most other strikers wouldn't. He creates himself more chances with his movement. So while someone like Defoe might get 2 chances and take one of them. Robbie might get 3 chances and take one of them. It doesn't really make much difference although I would obviously love to see him improve on one on ones, etc.

Sorry if this has been covered before.
Can't find it here after a quick glance.
Heard on Friday that Robbie is considering a move to Newcastle.
Heard it again today from a second person.
So long as he's getting first team football in the top half of the Premiership then I wont be too upset.
He's not appreciated at Spurs anyway.

In the weekend's paper's that Spurs were considering a swap deal with West Ham for Marlon Harewood.
At this stage the only think I believe is that we'll know where he's starting the season at 3 pm on 13 August

Mad to go to West Ham though they're a club I've a soft spot for. Newcastle'd be a good move IMO.
I think if he gets the chance to move to west ham he should go for it because hes not going to get more than a years first team football antwhere else because he is very over rated imo

Keane's goal scoring rates have been good at Spurs, Leeds, Coventry and Wolves and Ireland. Wherever he goes he will score goals - last year he had a good season, http://www.ananova.com/sport/soccer/topscore.html?menu=sport.football.topscorers
I don't think he is overrated, but perhaps somebody can analyze the importance of the goals he scores, i.e. how many irrelevant goals does he score, e.g. a the single goal in a 3-1 loss etc. versus how many goals he scores that actually win points? I think I saw something before about Defoe's goals have a higher point value, that really would be a empirical test of his value.
Whatever happen please nobody take their clothes off!

Overrated? Defoe is rated at £17m, Keane probably £4m. No need to tell you which one is the overrated one.

Imo opinion Jermaine Defoe easily has the potential to become a world class striker where as Robbie keane definatley does not

Ok then well what can keane do? He is not prolific and he is not a playmaker forward so what major quality does he bring to a premiership team?

He keeps on trying for 90 minutes and gets into good positions, and generally hassles defenders. He is frustrating sometimes but i still think he is quality.

Not profilic? He started 29 games last season, he scored 17 goals. In his Spurs career he started 98 games and has scored 46 goals. He is a top Premiership striker and he will get better.

Jermaine Defoe is very overrated for one single fact - he's an England international. If all the English players were as good as they were made out to be they'd be winning every international competition year in year out. But the reality is that they win nothing and that's unlikely to change IMO.
Robbie Keane is a better player than Defoe. He was Tottenham's player of the season the season before last and he scored as many goals as Defoe for the majority of the season. Defoe just got off to a better start.
He also creates far more opportunities for his teammates than Defoe and has a better all round game. Defoe, other than scoring a few goals, has very little else to his game and is not good enough to ever become a regular for England unless he improves dramatically in the coming seasons.

Last season, in club and international games, Keane played 54 games, of which 38 were starts. Defoe also played 54 games, of which 38 were also starts.
Keane scored 22 goals, Defoe scored 23.
Well if you are trying to find out who has a better record you have to forget about international games because there is no comparison between english strikers(Owen,Rooney,Johnson,Defoe, heskey and many more) and Irish strikers(Keane,Morrison,Elliot). So just look at games for spurs Robbie keane................................ Jermain Defoe
Appearances: 45(16)...................... Appearances: 44(9)
Goals: 17..................................... Goals: 22
I think defoes record is clearly better and he is two years younger.

Robbie Keane is Ireland's all time record scorer at the age of 24 and has a International goal scoring record is nearly one in two. Yeah, he's brutal.

You did say he should join West Ham as he won't get more than a year's first team anywhere else which suggests you don't think he's good enough for a better premiership club (and basically every other team is better than West Ham).
Don't judge him on being Ireland's top scorer then. How many "over rated" International strikers can boast a similar strike rate?

benni Mcarthy does! and he is looking for a move to blackburn
I completely fail to follow your logic. Defoe played ten times for England last season (3 starts) and scored one goal. Are you are suggesting that because he played alongside better players, his poor international record last season should be ignored? How does that work?
No my point was that defoe has 3 starts for England EVER whereas Keane must have 50 starts for ireland, so how can you compare there international records when they both play for differant countrys. Defoe would clearly have more than 1 international goal if he was irish simply because he would have been in the national at least 2-3 years ago because there is less competition for places up front for ireland and i guarantee you robbie keane would not have 5 starts for england if he was english
benni Mcarthy does! and he is looking for a move to blackburn
Benny McCarthy has a champions League winners medal and was the top scorer in Portugal under Mourinho. Pretty good player IMO.
Heskey has a geansai load of England caps and Darius Vassell has more than 5. Robbie is better than both.

In fairness at the time heskey deserved his England caps as he was playing extremely well for liverpool.
Darius Vassell has more than 5
What relevance does this have? if he had more than 50 well then you would have a point

He got a medal for sitting on the bench vs Bayern. Benny McCarthy spearheaded Porto's attack for the entire campaign and was their top scorer that season.

Wouldn't have found to many England fans at the time to agree with you there. 43 England appearnances 6 goals.

What relevance does it have? you said "robbie keane would not have 5 starts for england if he was english". Darius Vassell has 22 caps despite been a considerably less potent striker than Robbie.
Anyway i'm bored now.
Last post on this in awnser to your question my original point was that Robbie Keane will find it difficult to start for any premeirship team bar the bottom 5 teams and im sorry to anger you again but he is over rated!!!! and i did not bring Defoe into this thread somebody else did!

I can only get the stats for the premiership but in the Prem Keane played 2196 football, scored 11 goals and got 6 assists. I can think of at least 3 or 4 games which he played in midfield too. Defoe played 2516, scored 13 goals and got 2 assists. If Defoe is worth 17m and being linked to the likes of Chelsea, Keane is very much underrated.
