We haven't won anything yet lads, although I do agree that even a European Cup Final appearance is a better achievement than finishing 4th.
Liverpool will be remembered as european champions with all the glory and knock-on effects that attaches itself to that accolade. The team photographs in the summer will look distinctly different also, with a few footballs at the front of a bunch of over-achievers and a european trophy propped proudly in front of a host of european champions :)
:D[/QUOTE]
AC Milan will be European Champions.
A recent interview from Ancelotti has banished any doubts that were in my mind. The shrewd Italian will have his homework done on the Merseyside dogs. Interestingly, he said that the most important thing is not to conceed to Liverpool. If Liverpool do manage an early goal, they will sit back as they always do and defend for their lives, just as they done against Chelsea and others. I can see the final being a dogged, negative affair. Milan will play a cautious game but their quality will surely prove too much for the scousers and the cream will rise to the top. This however has not been the story of the CL so far and anything can happen over the 90 minutes plus. My money is still on Milan! :p

Tell me when sitting back on a lead was outlawed? Like Milan would never do that either, oh no! Everyone thought the same when we played Alaves in the UEFA Cup Final, and the game finished 5-4!! :D

That's what Coruna, Olympiakos, Leverkusen, Juventus, and Chelsea thought... But guess what, they'll watch the final like Everton fans on tv. :D

We're all broke after this years run, so a year in front of the box and a chance to swell the coffers again for another fun-packed Euro adventure in 2006-2007 won't go a miss ;)
Don't flatter yourself into thinking we'll be watching you lot when there'll be a choice of Barcelona, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich etc,etc.....
Bridge-too-and-far come to mind for Moyes and Co. :o

Will there be 2, 3, 4, or 5 English teams in next year's CL?
Liverpool and Everton may fk up the qualifiers, which will leave 3 teams in England, because you know the red-and-blacks will qualify.
Btw, I would like to know why Everton players were interviewed to give their opinions on Liverpool's CL entry. What's it got to do with them?

There could be 5 teams in it no prob.Everton and Liverpool could meet in the 3rd round qualifier.
Everton are now the best team in merseyside, didn't ya know that ,they wanted to know how they felt about 'little' liverpool(5 times european champs)getting in the CL. :D
Duff did against Spain but didn't in the CL, Ronaldo didn't in either (still in A. Cole's pocket from euro 2004) and certainly not against Porto in the last 16, and Rooney goals against poor opposition in the group stages.
Have to stick my oar in; Duff put in several hardworking performances in the CL, and although this is no indicator of world-class ability, his concentration and fitness levels were above average. He never played as many games in one season as he did last season, and so the price he paid for this fitness and endurance was that he lost a bit of flair, and was clearly jaded in the semi final against Liverpool. Yes, it probably sounds like making excuses, but it's a simple question; did Duff's performances over those two games in isolation show the entire extent of his talent; certainly not. Is Traore good enough a defender to keep Duff shackled for most of 190 minutes; in theory, surely not. So there are clearly other factors. Not least that Liverpool out-smarted Chelsea on a collective basis. But Duff showed glimpses, example being his goal against Barcelona. And he'll be back next season, in what will be only his second season in CL football. Have to say, I'll be looking forward to seeing Joaquin debut in the CL next season; can he make the step up?

The fixture list for the forthcoming Premiership season wasn't kind to Liverpool fans.
We start and finish the season away from home. All the glamour home games come early. We have Arsenal, Ushyted, and Chelsea all at home before the World Cup qualifiers end. The only one away first is the derby with Everton during Christmas, with the home return in March. We only have one trip to the deep south this season (Portsmouth), and it's on the last day of the season.
Everton have a handy start at home to Ushyted. Three points in the bag.

Slightly off-topic, but how many LFC fans are planning to go to Monaco for the Super Cup Final in August? Would love to go there myself, as I've always being fascinated by the place, and as LFC are playing, I think it's the ideal chance to go. There is no airport in Monaco, so it would be tricky to organise if you fly in through Nice, and the tour operators don't appear to be running any trips to the final, at least at the moment. :(
We're playing there in 7.5 weeks, to win the next trophy. Any info on how to get there lads?

Monaco is a nightmare to get to, and very expensive to get to. Tried to plan a trip there the last time we played Bayern Munich and you might as well be trying to get to outer Mongolia. I've heard things have improved slightly since then, a friend was saying Ryanair or Easyjet now fly into some airport down south, and you need to get a train from there. Or something to that effect. You're talking between 500 and 800 quid though, which is ridiculous.
In reply to anto1208's "fans" quip, I had booked my trip to Istanbul but had to cancel it as no one else from our group could afford to go. Having been to all the home CL games on the way Olympiakos, Leverkusen, Juve, Chelsea everybody was broke and the €1400 required to go to Istanbul was just too much. That's life. We went to Liverpool for the final instead and celebrated in the city. It's very easy for an Evertonian to be smart, but the fact is you wouldn't know Europe if you were shown it on a map ;)

Well, they run trips to the Monaco F1 Grand Prix in May every year. It's expensive, when you also consider that the event usually clashes with the Cannes Film Festival, but they manage to arrange a trip to it. The LOSC went there on a day trip for the CL game last season. I thought it would be nice to go to the game and spend a couple of days in the region around it, as some consolation for being unable to watch the CL final live last season. Looks very unlikely at this stage though. :(

When exactly were Everton the "best team in Europe"? Now, they can't be a Thai Youth Team. And these geezers are deluded enough to think they're going to qualify for the CL? With their star summer signings in place, i.e. re-signing a player they released at the end of the season, they'll be doing very well to beat the drop - again!!
You know that your team is beyond hope, when even Craig "Sign me, Please" Bellamy turns you down!! :D

Wow!!
Is that what you call a peak?? Pass the sick bucket!
At Liverpool, Houllier won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Charity Shield, European Super Cup, League Cup, while finishing 3rd, 2nd, and 4th in the league in 4 seasons, and the fans still demanded his head!!
At Anfield, it's the winning that counts, not the taking part. Also-rans win nothing.

But does it really matter?
I mean, is Liverpools success the real reason why kids who live hundreds of miles away start following them? To me it seems to be the most often repeated issue here, and every kid likes to back a winner.
And then is it really commendable to pick a team that win everything, and then spend the rest of your life gloating precisely about that, that they win everything? If I now decide that Tiger Woods is my favourite golfer, would it be appropriate to spend my days on golf websites laughing at someone who follows Darren Clarke?
And if you laugh at Everton because of their lack of success, you must be positively weeping tears when you meet a Preston fan, or a Rochdale fan. And do you then get all respectful when you meet a fan of, say Real Madrid?
Real football afficianados adopt teams for a variety of reasons... few of which in many cases have anything to do with success. Which is why the likes of Everton, Tranmere Rovers, Preston and Rochdale still have fan bases.
Anyone else is just a glory hunter and is liable to be fickle. Changing their allegiance when one team fades as a force and adopting another team.
As a diehard Shamrock Rovers fan once said to me " You can change your mother, you can change your wife, but YOU CAN NEVER CHANGE YOUR FOOTBALL TEAM!" :p
CollegeTillIDie
23/07/2005, 3:49 PM
I take your point, but I suspect that the most popular teams are ManU, Liverpool, Arsenal and, in recent years, Chelsea. They have a common denominator.
Yes but how many of those so-called fans actually go to watch their so-called teams?

Firstly, nobody is laughing at anybody for supporting Everton. All that's happening here is good natured banter between Liverpool and Everton fans. Banter is part of football. Secondly, far from 'positively weeping tears' at someone who supports a mediocre team, I have a lot of respect for them.
Thirdly, nobody can accuse any Liverpool fan of being a glory hunter as, in case you haven't noticed, success has been thin on the ground over the last 15 years. Supporting them in my lifetime has been shear frustration and a lot more lows than highs. Just because we have now won the European cup we are all 'glory hunters' again. It's just sour grapes from other fans who support success starved teams in the coco-pops championship ;)

Supporting a club is hereditary. It passes down through the family tree. Someone chooses to support a club. They then take their offspring to watch their team, who in turn, take their offspring to watch the same team as the years go on. Often, a fan has no choice but to support x team, as it's passed down through the generations.

Well anto, I don't know of any glory hunters like that. All of my friends and everyone I know who support Liverpool have been doing so for as long as I know them. The homecoming would have brought whole families out to see it (plus a lot of curious Evertonians...."Look, it's the European Cup (gasp!, sigh!)" :D ) which would have swelled the crowds. Liverpudlians are entitled to feel a part of any success, whether they go to the games or not. In any case, Liverpool have filled the ground most weeks since the fan card and PTS ticket scheme was introduced. I know because I can't get bloody tickets

I think ITV negotiated the shortest European football contract in history, i.e. showing Everton's live European qualifiers. They shouldn't even be in the competition at all.
Meanwhile, the champions play a rough-looking CL QR3 game in Bulgaria. And there's EC history too between the clubs. In 1981, we beat them 6-1 on aggregate on the way to winning the European Cup, however, they won 2-0 in the Sofia snow to win 2-1 on aggregate in the same competition the following year. It certainly won't be snowing there this time, but with the second leg at home, it should ease any difficulties that we may face against them this time.

Yes, all the hype about getting into the Champions League and then they go out after 2 games. Unlucky though to be drawn against the strongest team left in the qualifiers. The Hungarians Man U played were brutal. They had been puffed up by Ray and Johnny G because they had beaten Hadujk Split - didn't Shels do them over last year ?
