Do other Scandinavian languages use the thorn? Wish it was in still English

No. Shame we don't have it.
Wouldn't mind having the eth (Ð, ð) and ash (Æ, æ) as well.

The English alphabet is incredibly boring.

It'll be 6 games. TV changes public perceptions. Basically, if you're not on tv, you're invisible. The EPL is on morning, noon, and night for 10-11 months of the year. People are interested and want to watch it. In the LOI, we're on tv once (twice if we're live) a week. There is a difference.

6 games in a group stage however, gives us unprecedented media exposure at home and abroad, for 3 months of the year. People will notice.

It will be 6 games alright but it needs to be on a consistent enough basis over a few years for people to take notice. Shel's had a one-off good season in Europe but did not back it up. I haven't seen any Irish club back up one good run with another.

Only 6 times have an irish team won 2 European ties in the same season, including that Shels side.

Pats did it in 2008 and 2009

Anyway, it cost 1,500 krona to stream the IVB/pats game if anyone's interested. I'll be watching it in McDowells

It was reported the other day that Pats had intended to send somebody to watch IBV's recent home game, but after consideration about the last leg of the journey to the islands, the scouting trip was cancelled. That sort of report brings a wry smile to an Icelander, who wouldn't give up so easily.

A blow to IBV's chances is to lose their playmaker, Ian Jeffs. He picked up a 3 game Euro ban in 2005 for a straight red and still has a game to serve. It was only reported today, I guess most everybody had forgotten about it.

Our chief scour was supposed to head to IBV's game on Friday. While Pete said it was travellig time, it was a combination of price and value.

Did IBV send someone to Ireland geysir?

A village team on a remote island close to arctic circle send a scout over to Ireland?
Anyway that's not the point, a difference in perception of what constitutes a day to day challenge is the issue.
But if they had made the decision and thought it worthwhile to send a man, he would have made it.
The Faroese would expect no less from Brian Kerr.

Again, the decision wasn't made. They thought about it, but the main stumbling block was the cost. Regardless of the line spun by Pete in the press conference on Friday

That's obviously something Pats can take as a source of motivation. IBV didn't deem it necessary to scout them - very disrespectful. Village team, remote island, Arctic Circle or not.

It's true to say that most of you are beneath us.

I stopped by the 'stadium' earlier this evening, or was it late afternoon (hard to tell which, as the day is mighty long) to have a gander at the Pats squad training.
One fécker, Davo? was clean through, ballooned the ball over the bar, over the back fence, landed right on top of my jeep. There were about 20 Pats fans in the stand, might have been just 15, as one or two of them were truly massive. I had a short chat with the goalkeeper coach, Brian O'Shea (a short time but plenty of chat). He must have been a good goalie because he's not much taller than 5ft 7". Despite their preparations being hampered by a scout with cold feet, they watched 'the dvd' last night , a game that was played on this ground, so I said 'the 1 nil game to IBV' no he says '3-2 to IBV', so I don't know what game he watched, not this seasons for sure. Anyway he had a good suss on the IBV team & players and liked the style of the league here, ball on ground - plenty of passing.
I told him to buy a roll of bin liners and make sure all the windows were blacked out, so he could get some sleep.

I assume "Davo" is either David McMillan or, if you misheard, Daryl Kavanagh. Or Dave Mulcahy.

geysir
29/06/2011, 10:41 PM
McMillan it was.
Hard to make out the names over the goalie effin' and blindin' at top volume.
Doyler? tallish gangly lad with quick feet, sometimes too quick for his brain to coordinate properly.

IBV won a cup match away to Valur 3-2 on the 21st. Perhaps that was the game he was talking about. Tonight's game is talking place at Valur's ground?

It is. The reason the game kicks off at 6pm local time is to give Islanders aenough time to catch last ferry back home

That must be the game and yes the game's at Valur's ground. The pitch is minimum size but manicured to perfection. There is only one stand, holds at least a 1,000.

Jaysus, Mahon has some crass mouth, the headline in this morning's sports section (http://www.mbl.is/sport/efstadeild/2011/06/30/bakverdir_og_markvarsla_helstu_vandamal_ibv/)
'Defense and goalkeeper - a major problem for IBV'?
Nothing riles an Icelander like a loud mouth foreigner in on a budget trip for a few day, finding fault and mouthing it.
But who knows, as the goalie happens to be from Uganda. He played a blinder in IBV's last game, the coach singled him out afterwards and described him as performing like a circus animal. No pc paranoia here.

IBV regards it as a humiliation to have to play this game away from their Island paradise.
Their coach,
"This is a tough task. We meet a team better than us. They have won thirteen games in a row in Irish football and have come to the top."

Here come the traditional putdown

"This is a typical British team, they play like football was played on the black and white television in the old days"
:D

"They play a 4-4-2 with a powerful striker. All players on the team are extremely hard-working and may put pressure on the opponent. They are hard and tackle a lot. There will probably be so much tackling on this pitch, so much so that Valur will regret having lent us the stadium"

"We have to keep the ball on the ground and be very slick in our actions. We must let the ball roll on the ground. So we have to see what happens. I think this will be a fun game and hopefully entertain the people."

Pete a master at the Euro mind games too it seems.

For what its worth he said they look a good team, but he think the full backs can be 'got at' and he said "I wouldn't be mad about the keeper"

Fun translating the icelandic stuff through google

Reading on the Pats forum, a few of them have it working but most seem to be having problems with it. Some had to pay twice to get it working!
