Funny, there was me thinking Shams were just pedestrianly going through motions when down against FKC. Didn't seem much evidence of 'never say die'! Anyways, if you keeping living in hope, you're hopes will probably die in despair. I have a sneaking suspicion we'll see who are minnows and who are sharks this week in Europa!

There was plenty of evidence. Apologies if you missed it.

But at least we're still in Europe, and ready to give it another lash. Other clubs haven't earned such luxuries.

Okay, so enough of the petty digs and childish nonsense being displayed above.

Today is Europa League play-off first leg day. Genuine question....Do Rovers have a chance?

Spudulika
18/08/2011, 8:12 AM
They should do. Partizan are a good side but not world beaters, if Rovers keep it tight early on and have a cut on a few occasions, there's no reason why they shouldn't score and goal and head to Belgrade 1-0 up.

Ah. The relief.

Come on Rovers!

Really, really hope Rovers do it. But the much vaunted Copenhagen lost 3-1 at home to the previously-unheard-of Pizen in their CL play-off on Tuesday, which doesn't reflect well on the Hoops.
Prediction: Rovers 1 Partizan 2. (And 2-0 over there). Hope I'm wrong.

Samo Partizan!!

There are moments in history when a leader speaks and those words not only seem to reflect the thoughts and feelings of the time but somehow work to shape the very events of that history as it happens. Doctor King's inspirational "I have a dream" speech, the Gettysburg address, Churchill's "We'll fight them on the beaches..." all come to mind as examples of epoch-defining oratory.

Today, Michael O'Neill has joined the ranks of the truly great leaders with these profound words: "Our aim will be to keep a clean sheet, and obviously we'll be looking to score".

May have been unheard off but Czech sides had been pretty regular CL competitors until a couple of eyars ago.

Of course Partizan made it last year.

Will be pretty tough for Rovers to qualify but they can get a result tonight

To add to what Dodge has said, Czech and Slovak, and most EE sides, all do quite okay in Europe because they have quite decent (if not appropriately coached) systems for player development. Plus wages etc are low, so what they take in they can invest in players. BATE are the prime example of that, Bohs beat them in Europe, but a few eyars later they're making group stages.

I'd love to see Rovers go through, it would be good for the LOI.

Plzen are the Czech league winners so whether you've heard of them is irrelevant - they will always be challenging for the group stages. Partizan are obviously a better team that Rovers but the last round has shown we can compete with superior sides. Cut out the silly errors and cheap goals and we're in with a chance.

I saw Partizan playing last year in a league game and the difference in standard is such that I don't give Shams a hope over the two legs.

Charlie Darwin
18/08/2011, 12:53 PM
Well they lost 6 times and only scored twice and have since lost their star striker. I expect them to beat us for the same reasons Copenhagen beat us but there's always a chance.

Mr Maroon

I'd love to be wrong, but I really can't see Rovers going through at all. They'll probably lose both legs IMO.

The problem is Rovers don't score in Europe. To have any chance they need to take a lead over there. A nil all will be useless in my opinion.

Prediction: Rovers 0 - 1 Partizan

For historical context, Irish sides have faced Serbian opposition 3 times (all Red Star - twice as Yugoslavian, once as Serbian), losing all 6 games, and yet to score a goal

Never a peno in a million years. Ball to hand, which was down by his side, hit at very fast pace and deflected onto him by a player a yard in front of him.

Of course, I still shouted for it in my living room :)

Great movement from Hooperman there. Not so much from Twigg. Jesus, what a miss.

Why do Irish sides players when 6 yards out or less always get under the ball by almost impossible margins.

that long throw hasn't cleared a defender once this evening. change the fcuken tactic.

After conceding an early goal I was fearful for Rovers but they put in a good shift in the second half and deserved the draw. They could easily have sneaked another at the end there.

Keeps it alive for next week but it will be a very different game.
