I think some lad on ybig was suggesting a few months back that this lad was coming on board for us think his uncle told him(the lad on ybig)!!

Johnston is supposedly pretty highly rated -- apparently Chelsea have been following his progress. Irish Sun had a report of FAI approach in May: https://www.thesun.ie/sport/football/981653/fai-approach-scottish-born-celtic-winger-michael-johnston-over-declaring-for-ireland/

Wales seem to be a bit more pro-active in getting these young lads in the first team training squads or first team senior squads .

Not saying it would make any difference in this case but it would be a pity to lose a good young talent for the lack of a bit of nurturing.....

We need and have always needed to get as much talent from as far and wide as we can .

They do still need to want to play for us mind .

Has Will Keane actually changed allegiance?

one day later... Will Keane targets World Cup spot with Ireland: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/will-keane-targets-world-cup-spot-with-ireland-slkc9w0gf

Will Keane has spoken of his desire to play for Ireland at the World Cup next year. The former Manchester United striker is nearing a return for Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship after a long-term injury.

He told The Times: “They have some good strikers, but I was on their radar before the injury. I am an outside bet but if I can get back scoring goals I would like to think I have a chance.”

rest of the article is behind their paywall

It would be slightly bizarre if former Ireland player Michael Keane lined out for England against former England player Will Keane for Ireland!

This is the rest of the Will Keane part of the article-

The twin brother of Michael Keane, the England defender, admits that the tournament in Russia has been a motivation. “It is every player’s dream to play in the World Cup. Ireland are doing well in their group so they might make it,” he said. “If I ended up playing in a World Cup, all this hard work would be worthwhile.”

I'd feel better about him if he said this instead...

“If I ended up playing for Ireland, all this hard work would be worthwhile.”

Seeing as they are twin brothers it's more than slightly bizarre, perhaps worthy of penning another application to the Guinness book of records :).

He will suit us nicely so!!

Amazing how careers can pan out. He was on a whole other level of expectation compared to his brother when they were in the utd youth sides

Ben heneghan centre half signed for Sheff Utd from motherwell. Been very good seemingly at motherwell. Was at everTon then dropped into conference but has fought back. Played for England c while in conference. Think there was talk he was eligible for us when at everton

The apparent delay appears to have been related to either finding his birth certificate or getting it in order. He has had to do that before being able to apply for the passport. Not sure what the latest on it is, mind.

Will Keane - four senior goals.
Scott Hogan - one goal in his last 17 league games.

Ross McCormack, who in my opinion is a better player than Scott Hogan at Championship level, has struggled with the step up to Intl football. Not to mention Jordan Rhodes and Chris Martin.

Before Hogan, there was unreasonable expectations placed on Arter. Three competitive games have completely passed him by. McGoldrick is even worse. Christie's performances are more committed but by god he's a limited footballer. O'Dowda can't get near a poor Bristol City team.

Expectations really need to be tempered but I fear for the likes of Declan Rice and Liam Kelly when certain quarters are already asserting that they are the bonafide heirs to Whelan and Hoolahan's positions.

Not McGeady he played for Ireland from when he was 15 or so because the Scots had a weird system even though they wanted him. Houghton, yeah, was overlooked until he was in his late 20s.

What's the story with Chiedozie Ogbene? I'm guessing he'd have dual nationality.
Surely he'd be close to an U21 call-up given our lack of depth in attack.

Fair enough for the lad to prefer to play for Nigeria, at least he's being honest about it.
I wonder would he turn down an U21 call from us? The possibility of switching to Nigeria would still be there I'm assuming.

Yeah, he could even play in a senior friendly for us and still switch to Nigeria, so he wouldn't be closing off that option (assuming it's something he wants to keep open) by accepting a call-up by the FAI.

Once you get him in the system, he might stick with us. We do it with random English lads all the time, some of whom probably never set foot on the island.

Hale has been a fantastic addition. He was undoubtedly MotM last night, always wanting the ball, spraying passes all over the park, loves a tackle too.
I'm surprised someone in England didn't pick him up when he was released by Villa.
We'll do well to hang onto him even if we manage to stay up.

Brilliant. Delighted to hear that. Sounds like a lad with a future. It seemed he took the decision to return to Ireland quite quickly and didn't want to wait out the summer transfer window for an English lower league side. Have to respect that. Hopefully himself and his brother push on.

Marcus McGuane made his first team debut for Arsenal v Bate Borisov coming on with 10 minutes to go. Can play right back, centre back but mainly in the defensive midfield position. Played for Ireland U17 when he was known as Marcus Agyei-Tabi before then getting capped by England U18.

I looked into it a little more and it seems you are correct. Oh well..

“Of course, we’re disappointed to lose him but another player took his place for the first phase of European qualifiers in September and we progressed to the elite phase early in the new year.” As the FAI have already signed FIFA’s release form, Agyei-Tabi is now tied to England for the rest of his career.
