Went well - https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/james-mccarthy-completes-first-90-15338772

I wonder would it suit Silva to release him for the NI and/or Denmark game to help build up his game time?

That idea would have gone down well with Bobby Martinez!

I don't think it would have been a hit with Mr. Koeman either. The Northern Ireland game, in particular, would be an ideal run out for him though.

Watched the game. The best news is that he showed no fear going in hard with tackles. Was a bit of a ghost in the first half but dominated mid-field in the second. Im well impressed for a fella's 1st showing after being out so long

McCarthy being allowed to leave will probably come down to Idrissa Gueye leaving or not.

I work with a couple of Everton fans and they are crying out for McCarthy to return. Think Silva has lost the plot. Stubbornly persisting with same formula and personnel and expecting a different outcome. I suspect McCarthy may actually last longer at Everton than Silva.

Can't see him getting much game time for the rest of the season. Silva seems quite stubborn when it comes to team selection.

Definitely. Fourteen pretty meaningless PL games is all Everton have left and he's barely making the squad, let alone the first XI.

I forget what his problem was this time, has he healed 100% and is he just short of match fitness?

Yeah that seems to be the situation. Some comments from Silva here (https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/everton-boss-marco-silva-makes-15696620). Basically, we don't want him to leave in case we have an injury crisis.

McCarthy was key to getting us to Euro 2016 and although he played poorly in the opening two games, he was important against Italy to get us into the knockouts. He is vital for us in the next campaign, especially if Rice isn’t involved. Really hope he can get back into a team full time. He’s quality.

Well I suppose st least he is fit and hasn't picked up hamstring issues on his return. Hopefully we take him to the camp in Portugal and have him round the squad in June. I think he was supposed to come over for the last games but his wife had their baby

If he could get a run of games he is so important to us and still relatively young. He will have had over a year to work consistently on his hamstring rehab which will have been a major advantage of recovering from his horrid fracture

Fabian Delph signed - McCarthy falling even further down the pecking order at Everton, but he did play in their friendly against Sion at the weekend.

Worryingly, I haven't heard/read anything about his future this summer.

He badly needs to get out of there for our sake! Tricky one though, he's probably on good money and his injury record makes him a very risky purchase. A loan deal might be the best bet all round, there was speculation Newcastle might be interested but nothing too credible.

I still remember his debut for Hamilton, I read it in one of the old “Irish” shorts sections in the Sunday Times, as youngest player to make debut in Scottish league, think he was in first division then. But when I saw him play he never struck me as going to be a star, rather a pretty solid midfielder

On his day he is still one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League. For example I remember his quality really standing out in our victory over Germany a few years back. It would be great to see him string together a good few years now with Palace and play a key role for us in the upcoming Euros & World Cup.

He always played with a maturity and cautiousness that belied his age. Almost to his detriment, I think. He’ll be a real Hodson stalwart if he can regain fitness. His teams are coached and disciplined to the nth degree. But McCarthy will just be a ‘vanilla’ player for the remainder of his career, for better or worse.

Interesting point. It could be viewed that playing over 200 Premier League games and playing a few years with a top 6/7 side is actually delivering on the hype, these days anyway, given how few of our players even achieve that.

There's a lot of excitement about Troy Parrott at the moment but what are the realistic expectations? That he'll become a regular goalscorer for Tottenham or another Champions League team? Or would we be happy enough if he's scoring goals fairly regularly for a bottom half PL side? I suppose at the moment we have to dream of the former, but how likely is it to happen?
