You'd think for his debut they would have got the right size jersey for him.

Hey, it's not just Fly who can do this fancy smancy text overwrite thingy (http://greenscene.me/2011/03/james-mccarthy-contacts-fai-to-assure-allegiance/)

Hey.. gatecrasher, let Fly have his moment (week?) of glory, you had the whole 'gut test' which is now in foot.ie folklore.

Bizarre behaviour from Martinez.

As for the FAI reporting him to FIFA?UEFA? why? The player is with us. The amount of leeway we've pulled through the GFA on getting players to play for us, we'd do well not to be bothering the powers that be over nothing issues.

I don't agree that we've been accorded any extra "leeway" at all. The rules apply to us just in the same way as they apply to anyone else. The Good Friday Agreement has nothing to do with anything. Northern-born Irish nationals were playing for our sides long before 1999.

geysir
18/03/2011, 3:08 PM
That's true to an extent but the GFA has had an effect of playing its part in removing a barrier of sorts that separated a NI born national from the rest of us, the real nationals :). It's almost par for the course now that a footballer with a GFA termed 'Irish identity', will want to declare for the FAI.

Once McCarthy has received his binding cap, Delaney should send a bouquet of flowers to Roberto, thanking him for his part in the development of our prodigious talent.

Martinez has come out of this looking like a complete spanner. Complaining about pressure being put on McCarthy when in reality it's Martinez's own big mouth that has kept this story going in the media for months. Can he not see this?

how come the fai never went after mccourt? or neal lennon?

A combination of them being tied down by NI and not being good enough for our squad when we had the chance.

Unfortunately once they've been capped competitively players can't switch associations, but I hear FAI lawyers are working hard to get that rectified to allow retroactive poaching.

McCourt isn't eligible.
Hyothetical discussion about how good he is, is distracting from the build up to the second coming.

Was he? I hadn't been aware of that. He was first capped by Northern Ireland back in 2002, mind, and had already played in a competitive game for them by the time the most recent statute amendments took effect.

McCarthy has contacted the FAI to say he's 100% commited to us. As he probably was all along.

I strongly suspect that this statement will lead to Roberto Martinez kidnapping James and forcing (probably at gun point) James to whatever pitch that Scotland are playing on. James will then be forcibly togged in Scottish football regalia by Roberto and Craig (Levein). After James has played competively to tie him to Scotland, Craig will vow never to reveal what he knows about Roberto.

Still amazes me how mature McCarthy is for a guy his age. This interview really shows it was all just Martinez blowing smoke and Trap's english being misinterpreted horribly.

Trap was also misled by Martinez saying repeatedly that James still had a choice to make.

I still can't understand what Martinez was playing at. Even if he is mates with Levein surely it's not worth all the bother he's been to, increasing pressure on one of his best young players and making himself look ridiculous.

Was very peculiar indeed. You have to wonder where he was getting his info. Surely he'd be in constant contact with McCarthy. Was he just making it up then about James being undecided?

I dont even want to think about RM's mouth when it comes to Young James.
We should all chip in to send POSH to be his bodyguard until he arrives safely in Dublin. Can you take off tomorrow POSH? Do you have a nice suit? We can chip in for that as well if not.

Marty is a studio analyst for ESPN America during the Euro's/World Cup and I get the impression he likes the sound of his own voice and the publicity/profile it gives him. The McCarthy "file" has kept Marty's name continually in the press. The fact that he is using his star player to further his own profile with his utter ****** musings does not seem to bother the Napoleon complexed one.

"I've had to contend with this for a few years. But it has really all stemmed from other people wanting it to happen. Some people may have thought I was going to pledge myself to Scotland but that was never really on my mind, although a couple of people did speak to me about it."

Referring to the Scots contingent at Wigan there I reckon. Maybe Martinez too. Hard luck lads.

I always get that impression when I hear him. The way he elongates every sentence with unnecessary detail and generally goes on.

I think this is my favourite quote of the whole saga so far:

I can see why he's picked Ireland - more chance of a game.

Would he get in the midfield 5 ahead of Brown, Fletcher, Adam, Dorrans, Morrison, Naismith, McFadden, Bannan and Commons?

paul_oshea

he probably wouldn't get in ahead of the first team.be good if we had their midfield we would be vastly improved.

They do have far better midfield options than us but he would walk into their team, as he should ours.

Im not sure who the starting 4 or 5 is for Scotland these days but Brown, Fletcher, Adam, Commons are all in good form and experienced. The rest that are quoted I am less sure about curretnly but Naismith has plenty of domestic and european experience with Rangers, McFadden has played at a high level for a number of years, McCarthy wouldnt just walk in to their team. We have to be careful with the amount of focus we are giving young James (rightly so, as he is undoubtedly one of our finest prospects) but if you speak to fans of premiership teams or football fans in general not of an Irish persuasion, McCarthy is not high on their list of standout players this season many have not even heard of him.

I think he will be great for us given a bedding in period.

Fletcher has been in very poor form this season, and has always failed to produce for Scotland.

Got to disagree here. Most who actually follow the game and watch a good deal of football rather than just MOTD would probably have McCarthy as the second most impressive young player in England this season behind Whiltshire. One of the main reasons Wigan are bottom at the moment is the horrible run they went on when McCarthy was injured

Playing well in the SPL is not the same thing as playing well in the Premier League. Granted, Rangers have had a good cup run but the better players in that Celtic side are those from outside Scotland.

So are you saying McCarthy would be in ahead of Fletcher for Scotland? If so, I disagree. If not then you're commenting on a period of club form for Fletcher. Most comments I read about in Man U's recent defeat to Liverpool was how could Fletcher be dropped (He had been ill during the week it transpired) and how that was a major tactical error of Ferguson.

Thats quite a statement to make, 'Most who actually follow the game'. Perhaps your acquaintances are better briefed on the premiership squads than mine :) and you dont need to tell me of McCarthys qualities, Im well aware. Perhaps I do your average fan an injustice but I stand by my original comment that those I speak to would be fairly unaware of McCarthy or aware of him but not in the 'this kid is going to be something special' kind of way.

Its neither here nor there I suppose as long as he fulfills his potential for us.
