Someone tweet him asking how Holland got on in the Euros.

Koeman has now tweeted a sarcastic response (https://twitter.com/RonaldKoeman/status/847924574058663936) to O'Neill's claim (http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/statement-from-martin-oneill) that McCarthy "returned to Everton [post-Euros] after a very short break, but only 11 days later, he played his first of three games, all within an eight-day period, against Real Betis, Manchester United and Espanyol":
The France game was on the 26th June, Real Betis game (https://www.google.ie/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3715880/amp/Real-Betis-1-1-Everton-4-3-pens-Romelu-Lukaku-plays-Ronald-Koeman-s-lose-shootout-Dresden-Cup.html) was 30th July. McCarthy played an hour in that game before being replaced. He then played 66 minutes in Wayne Rooney's testimonial (https://www.google.ie/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3722325/amp/Manchester-United-0-0-Everton-Wayne-Rooney-plays-53-minutes-testimonial-match-Zlatan-Ibrahimovic-Jose-Mourinho-make-Old-Trafford-bows.html) and was only introduced as a sub in the 63rd minute of the game against Espanyol. (https://www.google.ie/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3726910/amp/Everton-0-1-Espanyol-Ross-Barkley-misses-penalty-Ronald-Koeman-loses-Goodison-Park-bow.html)
What is O'Neill actually saying? That he played for Everton eleven days after the France game or that he played for Everton eleven days after returning to the club post Euros? I presume the latter.
He seems to be clutching at straws a bit (at best, or just completely wrong) even if I kind of enjoyed the overall sentiment of his statement.

Maybe so, although I think Koeman is making a meal of this too in order to deflect from possible culpability on Everton's side for what is an ongoing, long-term medical problem. If you took Koeman's words as gospel, you'd nearly be inclined to think that James McCarthy had actually played a game for Ireland whilst injured. Crucially, McCarthy didn't play at all and, according to O'Neill, it was the Irish management (or medical team) who had stepped in to make the (albeit late) decision not to play him. As was reported in the Irish Examiner (http://foot.ie/threads/68192-James-McCarthy?p=1914186&viewfull=1#post1914186): "McCarthy thought he might still be able to play in the [Wales] game [even after overstretching himself in the pre-match warm-up] but, at that point [just before kick-off], the decision was taken to withdraw him from the side."
It's clear that our management tried to push things to the brink in spite of medical advice (and it didn't eventually work out), so there may well be room for criticism and a portion of blame there, but I would also have thought that taking the decision to withdraw McCarthy from the Wales game on the player's behalf, when the player was still saying he'd be able to play and even if it was close to kick-off, is surely the very definition of stepping in to protect the player from himself, no? So, the Irish management weren't totally reckless or negligent with regard to McCarthy's problem. Koeman would nearly have you believe that they had been.

Koeman was asked (https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2017/0401/864435-koeman-insists/) about the "feud" by Sky Sports after the derby today and took the opportunity to have another swipe at O'Neill. He was asked had it been a distraction or hindrance to Everton's preparations and he responded as follows:
No, of course not. My first job is preparing the team and if I see something really unfair and really badly informed... it’s about laughing. My answer was James McCarthy got three and a half weeks of holidays and not 11 days, so if you react, please at least be well informed about the whole question.

McCarthy might not play again this season, so I guess he's a pretty big doubt for the Austria game at this point.

He is still working seperate of the group.
I don't know. I don't know. There are four weeks to go and I don't know if he will be at a good level physically to play- we will wait.
It's not the first time he's been out. We need to see how he's recovering and at what time he'll be available I don't know.

He's been playing senior football regularly since he was 18, is it really that surprising he's starting to suffer injury problems?

And its so much more demanding than it used to be. They're lifting weights way too young, etc. I wonder if the whole nutrition/weight training/cardio thing just makes you more susceptible to injury over time.
Tiger Woods for example. The more Tupac-like ripped he became the more he was hurt. I know James doesn't have that body type necessarily but it's a constant cycle of weight training, games, practice etc...
Look at Major League Baseball. The Yankees best prospect just went under the knife yesterday. 4/5 of the Mets rotation has already had Tommy John Surgery. It's because there is no stop to it. There's no offseason. They are constantly training. The "healthier" they get.

I think there could be something in that regarding weight training, it is a bit unnatural in that it exercises separate groups of muslces
in a a very controlled manner unlike "normal" exercise such as playing a game where all your muscles are to a certain extent working
together. I think if your muscles are not in balance you will be more prone to injury as you will be able to exert an unnnatural amount of force
in areas that are not used to it.
Having said that James seems more prone to injury than others, serious training from a young age may play a part in it
as that is when your body/muscles are developing.
Staying away from the weights and just playing football is probably the best way to avoid injury.
Mind you having said that I have no idea how he trains, if at all seems to spend most of his time injured lol.

Knock it off with the comments will ya. Let's hope the man himself doesn't go online and read this message board.
He would have a right to be really ****ed off.
There is simply no evidence to suggest that he is anything other than committed to us.
He would have taken a bit of stick I'm sure from one or two people (remember Kevin Kilbane) when he made the initial decision to play for us.
Now you're going to mock him. He has a lot to offer, and all he needs is a clean run of games for club and country.

The part about him pulling out of the Ireland squad seems legit unfortunately, as they have quoted Koeman directly
He will stay (at home for these Ireland games). He spoke to the manager and they took the decision he will not go to the national team.
In my opinion that is a really good decision he needs to recover and get ready for pre-season.
Edit - same thing confirmed on Everton website - http://www.evertonfc.com/news/2017/05/19/blues-boss-on-mccarthy-future

Things are looking bright enough at Everton and they placed well this year so James might have more of a chance of winning trophies. But I can't help but think playing with one of the clubs mentioned in that article would lead to James going up a level in his performances for us.

West Brom are interested in signing McCarthy, according to the Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4585020/Manchester-City-Claudio-Bravo-Lille.html
Manager Tony Pulis tried for the Republic of Ireland international last year and has revived his interest as he assesses what options are available to replace Darren Fletcher.
McCarthy is wanted by Newcastle United also but they are looking to offload fringe squad players such as Grant Hanley and Daryl Murphy first before settling on what funds they have available for their summer rebuild.

WBA are a solid club. I have a real positive feeling about how this current iteration of Newcastle is going to progress. I think that they could push into the top half quite quickly under Rafa and with financial backing. I wouldn't complain if he went there at all.

According to the Daily Mail, Burnley are now interested in signing McCarthy as part of a deal that might see Michael Keane move to Everton: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4618364/Everton-sell-James-McCarthy-Swansea-want-Abraham.html
Burnley have discussed a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy. The clubs are in contact over the prospective sale of Michael Keane to Everton and Burnley are keen to take McCarthy either as part of that deal or separately.
McCarthy is ready to leave Everton this summer and has interest from Newcastle United and Aston Villa among others but Everton have been looking for more than £20m for the Republic of Ireland international.

<MOD EDIT - REMOVED>
Under normal circumstances I would say that Everton is a far more stable environment for a player, but Newcastle could be a good fit right now. He'd have a much better chance of starting and he would seem like a Benitez type (i.e. conservative, tactical, professional, safe). They could be good for each other.

Personal insults?? Seriously!
How is suggesting a Liverpool fan might have a bit of a biased dislike for Everton a personal insult?
The comments are juvenile and irrational in my opinion.
As for their "awful" results against the big teams last season... they were undefeated in the four games against the Manchester clubs, three draws and a 4-0 win over Man City. They also beat Arsenal and drew with Spurs.
Some poor results also but that's to be expected against teams that are better than you are.

Is this a post about James McCarthy???
Would really love to see him get sorted quickly.
He needs to be up and running at a new club in the next week, I would think, in order to hold out hope of starting on the first day of the season.
And if it drags on and on without him playing first team football, he'll likely be out of the running for both qualifiers in September.

Agree to me he is the player who let's us have some element of control in games which I never think we have without him. Hope he gets a move anywhere in a top league. Koeman has handled him very badly and acted in a very unprofessional manner not becoming of a mid-sized club like everton

A move to Newcastle might be out of the question now that they have signed midfielder Mikel Merino from Dortmund

Merino seems like a different type of midfielder, is only 21 and it's only a loan deal. Can't imagine it would lessen their desire to sign McCarthy too much if they're serious about him.

He wasn't involved last night in their EL league game. Leicester mightn't be a bad shout either, they're getting into the habit of splashing their cash, having shelled out 25m for young Ineacho from City, and not properly replaced Kante (not suggesting James will do that either).

Koeman is still managing his fitness, concerned about his knee (was it not groin pre-summer?) and explains why he wasn't included in final warm up game against Sevilla. - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/everton-koeman-james-mccarthy-lennon-13440096
Both were not fit (McCarthy & Aaron Lennon). I don't know about Lennon moving - I haven't heard anything. He's not fit. When he was fit he was in the squad.
James still has some issues on his knee so out of protection I left him out.
