this has been an absolute disaster by Trap from start to finish and i dont see what Given is achieving with those initial comments. Thankfully, it seems that James is a pretty level headed sensible young lad and is willing to be patient.

Communication definitely leaves a lot to be desired. I wonder if maybe Alan Kelly could take over that end of things. I think Brady did it when he was with the team.

players have to take responsibility also. first mccarthy withdraws last May due to tiredness and the same excuse was given for withdrawing this time. do players not have it written into their contracts anymore that they must be released for international matches? I get the impression many of our new breed couldnt really be bothered. Maybe I'm wrong but thats the impression i get

Daniel McDonnell is making a meal out of it again I think. And the Trap-Stephen Ireland comment was an attempted joke.

it did seem trap was a little peed off last night in his interview. from what i thought he said was next time we call he should turn up....along those lines?

im just addressing one of your points - but i dont think tiredness was the reason given this time out?

Hmmm very confusing.

Something gone askew somewhere.

Is there a story in this yet? I don't see it. Guy was injured, not in squad. Proved his fitness, drafted into squad. Injured again, out of the squad.

Talk of defection, personal unhappiness, enmity between Trap and him appears to be nothing but unsubstantiated scaremongering.

Ankle injury, mentioned in here a few times, with credible sources.

Ya then trap should fan the flames.all part of being a manager. He has only made things a lot worse by saying 'remember the last time i met some player'

there seems to be a big bubble around trap and his squad and everything else.

I like trap being honest to the public but he could fix it before he is honest.

I have to agree. It's almost a given now that when he's called up he'll pull out at the last minute. It's frustrating to see him play so well at the weekend and then pull out. It's happened one too many times now I think. Can't see Trap calling him up again for a long time. not sure if I'd blame him either. Can't imagine Kevin Moran back in the day pulling out of squads cos he was a bit tired or got a knock on the ankle...

or got a knock on the ankle...

Of which he was previously out for three months with.

Play a meaningless friendly and maybe aggravate the injury, ruling yourself out for the season
or
Stay with your club, get treated by the physios, and perhaps play in a meaningful, competitive international in a month.

But how many times has he pulled out? He pulled out before he got an injury because he had a hard season. It's been handled very poorly. He needs to say something or do something to show his commitment. Would make his life much easier.

If he's injured, by all means, stay and get treatment. But will we see him play Wigan's next game? Probably

It's not a "friendly" or haven't you heard? It's a competition, not hugely important but a competition nonetheless.

I think Wigan just didn't want to risk him as he was just back from injury and that's fair enough. Every other team in the competition is suffering likewise.

Martinez on McCarthy: (http://irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/high-praise-for-mccarthy-after-wigan-victory-144392.html)

"We missed him too much," the Spaniard said. "He started the season really, really well and you quickly forget in football how good a player can be or what an impact he can have on the squad.

"He’s come back three weeks ahead of schedule, which is an insight into the type of character that he is. The performance showed he’s not a 20-year-old player, his tactical awareness and his quality is of someone more mature than that.I would be significantly less than surprised if Wigan wanted their man nowhere near Dublin this week.

It's a friendly competition though. It's not classified by FIFA as a competitive match. Thus, it's a friendly.

And since then it's been proven that it's a calf injury and not "tiredness" at all.

Absolutely. We're not looking in bad shape considering the amount of pull outs in general. (Seven for NI and similar for the Scots I believe.) All the big names tragically struck down..

With some assistance from Trap if those quotes are accurate!

This is interesting though:

"I am disappointed he is not here. We asked him in the summer and his manager said 'Please excuse him but he is tired'. Twenty-one and tired . . . but that's okay. I have respect for my colleague (Martinez).

Wasn't 'tiredness' cited this time also, at least initially? Sounds like the club line to me. They're coddling him.

You have to read the last sentence.

"Maybe I will try to speak with his manager and maybe with him. Maybe he is tired, maybe he is injured," said Trap.

Loads of players are dropping out for this international break. Fabregas and Van Persie have suddenly got a bug/flu, starfish Gerrard hurts his groin, Keane pulls out with a calf strain etc etc.

McCarthy is too important for Wigan and they are wrapping him in cotton wool. Martinez must have had a word and unfortunately Wigan pay his wages so we won't get to see him play.

Never lets it lie does he. 2 page spread in the hard copy as well that isn't online. And Daniel McDonnell needs to give it a rest at this stage and all. Why the hell did the media lads not let up on this today, they know it's going to **** Trap off and they're purely doing it to get a reaction. Tabloid hackery at it's worst from lads that should know better. They're getting more like the UK red tops by the week.

That's what makes the fact that so many journos wouldn't let it drop today all the more annoying, they're lack a gang of kids pulling a dogs tail to see how he reacts and then whinging about it when they get bitten.

Hyland is known for his poison pen. Articles like that are exactly what we don't need right now. Tabloid hackery cost England any chance of Big Phil as manager after Sven and you would have to wonder if something similar could happen here

Still though... Neither party are making the right noises. The tired thing has raised it's head again and been sustained.. Could easily have been dismissed and hasn't.

Pulling out of a freindly squad is hardly the end of the world. Hopefully if he has a good run with Wigan until the end of the season he can be a part of the squad for the rest of the competitive games before the summer.

WTF?!? This sort of speculation does no good to anyone. We have no reason to doubt James, he has consistently stated that he wants to play for Ireland, even with recent approaches from Scotland. He will play for us and was apparently gutted that Wigan pulled him out of tomorrow nights game. What more do we want!??! Think we are just been slightly insecure over this.

Given having a dig now as well....

Journalists are there to **** stir. The honeymoon period for the Trap is well and truly over I'm afraid with respect to the local media. The journalists are willing to stick the knife in at any opportunity (novelty factor has worn off. You only have to look at Capello and English media to see how a good relationship can turn sour) so it won't surprise me if this story runs for a little longer.
