I know by the letter of the law playing against Brazil in our next friendly would not tie him to us categorically
but when you play against Brazil in an International match that is as high profile as it comes for a friendly and it is my belief that though it would not put the matter to bed for the anoraks (i.e. most if not all of us) then for most people that would be that.
Even though we have gladly accepted players that have played lower level matches for other countries we have never (to my mind) had a player that played in such a high profile match for another country
Fair points Seanfhear. But see also the parallel thread on Shane Duffy. If he'd come on in NI's summer friendly in Italy, do you think that would have stopped the speculation about him declaring for the South? I mean, I know most of the NI senior squad didn't take that game seriously enough to actually turn up for it, but we were playing the fairly high profile World champions.

I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't called up.
He should but as Trap as proved with Andy Reid he won't call up who the public want.

I think McCarthy let Craig Levein know where his future lay. Levein seems certain that the lad is not for turning, which is great news for Ireland. Looking forward to seeing him play a full international in the near future.
Maybe I misheard but nearly sure I heard the end of an interview with Sean McCafferty talking about how "Irish" James feels ...
the benchmark seemed to be that his Grandfather use to take him to loads of Celtic matches!!!
It sounded right up there with Keiron Westwood "I'm a good Catholic" :p

I think that once a player has played in a friendly for the senior team then it is pretty difficult to switch.
I am sure it has happened a few times but up until now not that often.
Of course some people for what ever reason would not leave it at that but I believe the vast majority of fans and even players would basically say that was that.

If you could find that it would be appreciated. That kind of thing sickens me. 'I'm Irish, so I support SELLICK.'

If you have a bone to pick about that then it is with McCafferty, not James. Even with that, McCafferty was talking about a lad who was born in Scotland and was just describing a few things about his relationship with his grandfather.
McCafferty spoke well and was close to the matter.
He also included a few interesting titbits about that Dutch lad who plays for Utrecht.

How unusual. A lad born in Glasgow with an Irish Grandparent uses their support of Celtic as one of his links to being Irish.
Well actually its not that unusual is it? Many of the diaspora have Celtic as one of their links to their Irish heritage. You might not like it, for whatever reason, but its a fact of life that Celtic and many things connected with the club and its fanbase have Irish links - particularly to a young lad growing up in Glasgow.

Why would it be gross incompetence.Fair enough with every game he is playing now in the Premiership hes is earning his place in the squad on merit, but we will have plenty of friendlies in the next few months to blood in new players into the squad. Not all of them will be introduced all at one time. Most of the squad from the last campaign will still be around and massive changes arent needed. The thinking to get him into the squad now to tie him down is a non issue for me. Over the last number of years McCarthy has never shown any inclination to change his mind about playing for us, even when he was getting dogs abuse every week in Scotland for his decision. He quiet happily travelled all over europe with the underage squads and performed extremely well.He has said no to Scotland and given us nothing but his full commitment so I dont see any reason to question his loyalty to us now just because the tabloids got the slightest sniff of a story just because there is a new manager of Scotland. Whether he is called up against Brazil or at any other time when his form deserves it is up to Trap to decide and McCarthy will happily play for the under21s if Trap decides hes not ready for the step up yet

The relevant bit of what McCafferty said was that his technical abililty is exceptional and marks him out as a great prospect.
I'm not one to support the Celtic=Irish badge but that particular bit of the interview didn't even register with me. It was said in the context of him being of Irish lineage and that his declaration for Ireland wasn't something strange or out of the ordinary.
Was a good interview with McCaffrey on OTB last night, came across well and very articulate. Certainly seems to have a good understanding of the players. Alot more about him than Don thats for sure.

yeah, injury alright. He actually played quite well again, more than held his own. And, keeping it in context, a great performance from a very young player.

Leave Mac alone says Trapattoni
'We don't want another Ireland case on our hands'
GIOVANNI Trapattoni has begged for in-form Wigan teenager James McCarthy to be left alone to make a final decision on his international future -- for fear that the teenager would become a media circus like Stephen Ireland.....

McCarthy comes across as a very mature young fella. He has never given any indication that he was gonna change his mind over the last few years and it has only been media rubbish that put doubts in peoples minds. Glad it is finally put to rest now

Scotland/Ireland issues aside, he should be capped on form. Those who think that McCarthy does not have the form or quality for the senior squad have not been keeping up with the Prem lately. He looked certainly as good, if not better, than Whelan in the Wigan-Stoke game.

he surely deserves a cap against brazil...he is playin quite well in a premier league side and scoring a couple of goals....after all it is only a friendly,if the likes of martin rowlands can get a competitive cap in the qualifyers then i'm sure mccarthy deserves a cap against brazil!!

I watched the first few minutes, he made a couple of highly questionable passes, thats about all I can report though as I switched back to the Arsenal fiasco pretty quickly.

I half watched some of it in Chineese, he did well at one point when he kept the ball in with his head and beat a player.
Sky says "poor set pieces". I saw him took a corrner which was cleared at the near post.
Rated 3rd best of the Wigan players on Sky Sports site.

He is not in the Under 21 squad for game against Armenia in March, which would suggest he is going to be called into the senior squad for game against Brazil.

Wigan actually played some decent football today. They were hard done by - Defoe's goal was a mile offside and they were always up against it after that.

well it was my 1st time seeing him play, and in fairness with the condition of the pitch and the constant long balls by the Wigan defence he didn't have many opportunities to impress. He was not the worst Wigan player today 85% of the time he got the ball he played the short simple pass to try keep possession(unlike most of his teammates who were content to just kick it away).
He also seemed to get more frustrated, with the way the game was panning out, as the game wore on.

Liam Ridgewell just did his best to end James' career with a horror challenge at the corner flag on 74 minutes. He took the lineman out as well! Terrible tackle. He'll be charged by the FA for sure.

I agree with you, it seems like he doesnt get the ball much. You could tell he was frustrated with that Figueroa guy, who is just awful.
Tough game to watch, turned it off in the second half. You can tell james is lively and agressive though. From watching him, I like his personality on the pitch....

McCarthy had to be taken, nothing on the official site about any injury, but this is in the match report: http://www.wiganlatics.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10429~47401,00.html
It just wasn't to be Latics' day, a feeling confirmed on 75-minutes when Liam Ridgewell flew in dangerously on McCarthy, leaving the youngster on the floor and in a great deal of pain, and the linesman needing attention after the corner flag struck the official.
