So Trappatoni is having a go at McCarthy for not turning up for the friendly but yet he was the one that didn't include him in the original squad because he said he felt he was injured and wouldn't be ready to play. So he can't have it both ways!
I am disgusted as much as everyone else that he's not going to be there but at the end of the day the club has to look after their own needs and I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is their decison and not his.

They're having kittens over on YBIG! Don't blame them mind you. I have that horrible feeling I got when I heard on my car radio that Roy Keane hadn't turned up for Quinn's testimonial.
They should play "Communication's Let Me Down" by Spandau Ballet on the PA tomorrow.

Thats because you have the sensible old guard who started the site, produce the mags, and get sh*t down and then you have the other "parasites" as I call them who invaded the site around November of '08 as the site started to pick up in popularity. As the heads are far more laid back there than the folks here, and they basically have a sort of (formerly quite excellent) anything goes section, threads tend to degenerate rather quickly and I think it spills over into the Ireland section (for example, last time I posted Irish Scorers there, I believe yapster was also posting). I'm sure there are a handful of them who are sensible, but I lost the patience to attempt to weed them out a long time ago.

Kingdom, I was trying to figure it out too. I think there should be a full stop after "while" and "thay" should be "that". So POS is asking if the John Kenny tweet was after Shay's comments were reported.
Common sense would suggest that he's not being risked by Wigan, which is the right decision in my opinion. If it's more sinister than that then it's a right royal fcuk up by FAI and/or the team's management and would be unforgivable. Tuff Paddy, D69er, soccerc - post here, not on YBIG!

I don't see how it adds up. He/Wigan pulled him out of the squad due to an (apparent) ankle knock, he says he's gutted not to be involved, then we're losing him?
When I read this from RTE (http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2011/0207/republicofireland_wales.html) it seems that Trap says the right things about him not being 100% and how Trap will wait for him.
Crazy comments from Given though. It's only those comments that would make me wonder if there is something else going on.

Twitter seems to be great craic for the likes of the transfer window or during a game for the likes of BBC Live, but for journo's to be doing this type of thing seems to be a bit, well, amateurish I think.
Re Shay's comments, I wonder who was the last Ireland manager to have real control over the squad.

If McCarthy gets chopped down by a late tackle in a near empty DW Stadium, does anybody in Trap's backroom staff hear him fall?

Re: Given and Trap's comments. They (Trap in particular) get asked the same questions over and over by the same journalists. McCarthy is the journalists' latest myopic obsession now that both Reid and Ireland have fallen victim to their own importance and they're going to fish for the answer they want every time. In Given's case, he probably knows as little about McCarthy as anyone else and was possibly influenced by a leading question.
edit:
Notwithstanding what I just said about journalists... Daniel McDonnell on Twitter: "Response from McCarthy camp in tomorrow's Indo. The headline 'Staying Green' should give an idea where his international future lies."

I think things have changed considerably since Given started his career, the money the player get has increased considerably and they have agents who
get their cut who will influence the players. Slightly different for Given being a goal keeper who and expect a longer and more injury free career.
I can see how the game can be seen as meaningless friendly too.
McCarthy does not want to be playing too many game just after an injury, but it is still disappointing and makes me feel a little concerned
that something may not be right.

I have read Shay's comments and can't find anything remotely controversial in them. Normal stuff from Ireland's finest player.

Well his career seems to be on a downward spiral.
It remains to be seen if he can hold down a place in the Newcastle squad never mind the Irish one, if he was not good enough for Villa
it is doubtful if he will be good enough for Newcastle.

Roy Curtis doesn't go for exclusives to be fair. He usually just chooses somebody to be angry at and then spends 40 paragraphs tying them in with a metaphor-soaked narrative on the downfall of the Celtic Tiger.

What I wish I knew about Trap is how annoyed he is with McCarthy. If he meant what he said in the quotes it seems he is taking it in stride. Wants the boy to get healthy. But some doubt is creeping in.
I know one thing, the next time he is picked...he has to blody well show up. The situation is getting annoyingly precarious. Its not just if James wants to be here that is worrisome it's that management will still WANT him here as well.
Also over shadowing the debut of Clark, Coleman and hopefully Wilson. Which is what we should rightly be discussing.

the senile old clown hasnt spoke to the guy since last summer and hasnt even got his numberr
"I haven't a number," he said, "but in the summer when we asked him if he was tired, injured and I spoke with Martinez because it's better to speak with the manager first. The players have limited responsibilities because there are also clubs who decide whether you can go."

Nothing on there about it really, a passing mention at best, amongst a fair bit of bitterness and a strong impression that there wouldnt be much of a welcome for him in any event, but surely if it were about to happen, that board would be full of discussion about it.
That and a huge sense of loss from the more knowledgeable among them.
I think its a non runner. I hope it is. Surely the one so called, world renowned manager we have had isnt about to drop a bollock on this scale.

No direct quotes from McCarthy in the piece.
My own personal view on it is that he did come off with an injury towards the end of the game so if Wigan has said that was the reason there would have been no issue. But using the line that he was tired for a 2nd time was amatuerish and disrepectful. I would have liked to see the FAI stand firm and insist that he travelled over to be assessed by the FAI physios as they were well within their rights to do. That way it would have set a marker down to stop clubs messing us around in future

A lot of knickers in a twist on this one - A nothing story again, thankfully some of the more level headed sane posters keeping this in check.
Perhaps, as has been mentioned earlier, a simple meet up with the squad to watch the match from the stands (no inspectiond from the FAI physios necessary) would have been the only gesture required to appease those more 'worried' fans.
McCarthy is going nowhere.......
I can completely understand why Wigan would want to protect their best player from playing in a relatively meaningless tournament after he has been out for 3 months with an injury. I am also reasonably confident that James McCarthy really wants to play for Ireland. Nobody would put themselves through the abuse that he (and Aiden McGeady) had to endure at every Scottish away ground when playing for Hamilton after he chose Ireland over Scotland. Would you want to suddenly turn round and start playing for a country like Scotland after receiving such abuse as a 18 year old boy? I wouldn't. I also wouldn't like to hear the regular anti-Irish abuse that is found on the Tartan Army messageboard, and is commonplace throughout large parts of Scotland. Many Scottish fans are fond of telling people of Irish descent that the famine's over, why don't you go home, but they don't like it when McGeady and McCarthy followed their advice.
Regardless of this, Trap should have capped McCarthy in either the Montenegro or Andorra home games to tie him to us for forever, and put an end to this debate. Playing the likes of Martin Rowlands or Paul Green in front of the best Irish midfielder since Roy Keane is a disgraceful decision

Couldn't agree more Fitzy! That kind of stuff is going to stay with you forever and hopefully drive him onto be a world class player. Trap is not helping the situation (as usual) and questioning the players commitment can only alienate him further from the squad.
