Also- football will always be a gamble to some extent. You can set out a perfectly reasonable budget but if the team bombs suddenly everything from your gate receipts to commercial revenue to fundraising and general energy levels of volunteers collapse as well. Add in a few unforeseen expenses and a relatively well run club can still end up in trouble.
I see your point but I think its very sketchy and is the EXCUSE that clubs use when they do run into trouble. With one year contracts no club should fall into financial trouble from one poor season. Sure gate reciepts might fall, but at most clubs not to that big an extent. Sponsorship money should be received well in advance of the season, certainly projected sponsorship and as such shouldnt affect a well run club. Fundraising shouldnt be taken into account if its not already secured, isint this why we have licencesing?
If a club has a poor season and revenue such as gate reciepts fall then this can be re-adjusted the following year with a lower playin budget. It doesnt all collpase that dramatically unless a club is very poorly run.
My point really is people arent culpable enough for screwing things up. There able to walk away scot-free after messing players (lives) and fans around, its unacceptable and the FAI desperately need to come round to this....
Sorry for going off topic.... Bobby Ryan to Monaghan :p
just to keep the off topic discussion going a bit longer - does anyone know the transfer fee implications of one year contracts? As i have said a number of times before the main target of a lot of clubs should be the securing of decent transfer fees for our best players. It is something we are absolutely terrible at as a league when it arguably should be the thing that we are strongest at (with due acknowledgement that it is hard to achieve due to the set up and relationships that exist in Irish football).
Short question, do the 1 year contracts limit the ability of clubs to secure a decent and reasonable transfer fee?

A player has to be with a club at least two years on semi-pro or pro terms to get a fee if he moves out of contract and under 23.
If he joins a new club and signs a one-year contract, he can walk for free at the end. If he signs a two-year contract, he'll command a transfer fee. (Provided the club have offered to renew the contract on similar or better terms)

Don't care what Bohs/Dundalk fans say about their club's offers. He lefta asuccesful bohs team to join Dundalk based on money. He obviously wasn't happyw ith latest offer, tried to get better and now has it with Bohs.
Wouldn't look too far into it IMO
Im not particularly fussed and bear no ill will to the player. He moved to Dundalk for more money he has left Dundalk for more money supposedly. My point is simply that if Bohs have imposed an internal €500 wage cap then laeving Dundalk for more money is not his motivation cause the offer was larger 500pw.
I too apologise for going off topic.
Talking to one of the guys at our club last night and he was very impressed the way Dundalk have been going about their business off the pitch.
Well it has taken some time, I think we broke even in 2007, made a profit of 10k when winning the FD in 08 (and when prize money was added this rose to 50k), a loss in 09 first year back up (collapse of sponsorship mainly but higher wages), then a small profit last year (euro helped), so its very carefully managed.
One of the first targets Matthews set when he took over was to challenge every section of the club to return some revenue. 3 bars now operating, pitch rentals, and the big one will be the YDC, which should start to return a siginificant annual profit from 2012, so potentially thats 5 revenue steams (but two are only occasional event bar revenue) to add to the core incomes of gate money, sponsorship & any prize money.
All of which will help the playing budget, but I have no doubt it will still present a huge challenge to maintain.
Dundalk will not be signing Shaun Maher.

Who is left though?
Plenty. It doesnt have to be a recognised name. Foster isnt that stupid that he'd look at a player needing a medical and leaving himself without other options.

Apparantly before the demise of SF(Hawkins,Maher) Foster was looking in England for a few centrebacks, so if the money is available then he should probably re-visit that route.

This is one area where central contracts help. The company/association who "own" the player can sell him at a decent price even if he is out of contract - this can exist under EU labour laws and doesn't restrict the freedom of movement, afaik.
Derek O'Brien signs for Cork City
more here (http://www.corkcityfc.net/home/2011/02/18/derek-obrien-signs)
there's also a rumour floating about that Pete Mahon wants Shane Guthrie to come down on loan for the season.
Any Pats fans shed any light?

I have heard that rumour too, and suspect that Ian Foster is interested.
Don't know how keen Mahon would be on letting him off to a rival PD club, or how Guthrie would see playing FD with Cork as opposed to PD with Dundalk.
Somehow I suspect that Gary O'Neill figures in the thinking here, and there were rumours that Cork had made him an offer - me thinks Guthrie on loan to Cork and O'Neill signs for Pats could be the outcome

Any Pats fans shed any light?Didn't hear a word about it. He only signed a one year deal about 3 weeks ago so why sign him at all? We had a fans Q&A session with pete on Wednesday and he didn't mention when asked about the squad

O'Neill won't be signing for Pats. Apparently they 'looked' at him but his medical history put them off. No offer was made.

Yup, he will definitely not be signing for us now, not a hope we can match Limericks wage offer.
Hopefully it goes well for him at Limerick.

Someone just posted on out forum that Conan Byrne is going to meet with Pete Mahon next week although Pete did say at the Patrons meeting on Wednesday night that we wont be signing anymore players, so we will have to just wait and see

Karl Bermingham to the Drogs!
He was playing for Shels tonight
Brendan McGill was another free agent lining out for Shels

Got the story tonight. Ezekiel was right. Pats offered Guthrie around trying to free up cash. Cork and Dundalk interested. Guthrie preferred Dundalk
Pats hoping to use his wages elsewhere

Thanks be to god we didnt sign him, despite Fenlons efforts apparently. Seriously, more suited to Rovers.

Tis true!
The rumours that cropped up for Pats last night were Conan Byrne and Anto Murphy (for 3rd spell)
Murphy had agreed deal with Rovers but when Fingal lads became available Rovers took deal off the table.
Both would help us

Anto Murphy to us is looking like a done deal now, Happy with it if true, he is a good player and can play in so many positions and also gives us the option on a long throw, Would have preferred Conan Byrne tho

Source for this? Was mentioned on our forum, found it a bit nuts.
Suprised to see Gary O'Neill going to Rovers after apparently turning them down for another contract at Fingal before. Rovers have plenty of options up front now. Could do with a bit of strengthening at the back though I reckon?

Bolger done the same with us but look where he is now. ;)

not so nuts if a lot of teams have made their signings and maxed their budget and there are no other contract offers out there. As i said, its a clubs market, players arent getting paid near what they were even as recently as last season. Good for the league overall i think.
That said, it would still be a surprise move.
Rovers have plenty of options up front now.
Twigg, Fenn, Kilduff, Kelly, Stewart, Sheppard, O'Neill
MON must have been chugging back the scotch during the off season... :) :pig:
Is Fenn still with them?
according to the official transfer thread, he is... thats what i was going off. Even without Fenn, its a huge list of forwards.
There was talk of Stewart going back to Derry? Any Truth?
Nothing up here from what I have heard. Kenny has said he is happy with the squad but dont be surprised to see one or 2 more additions, so one never knows
