Chris Forrester has had his contract terminated so he can return to Ireland. Be interesting to see where he ends up.

Are players not free to negotiate with other parties in the last 6 months of a pro contract? Obviously in the LoI that would be the majority of the 40 week contract period anyway!
Think that 6 months rule only applies to players agreeing terms in other countries to the one they are currently playing in.Anyway, given the size of Ireland there is a long and glorious history of 'tapping up' by every club.

What a great replacement for Dylan McGlade and a shrewd bit of business there by Neale Fenn - caught everyone off guard.

Edit: I actually wouldnt be suprised if Shels get him, at the rate theyre going!

Athlone actually don't have a bad squad this season so far. Made a few shrewd signings this winter.

Was a real live wire type of player for Dundalk, worked really hard on the pitch, and definitely offered something to Dundalks attack but lacked real quality on the ball and was raw overall with his descon making. Probably played his best football at Dundalk, won the double, played Champions League and offered a nice balance with Byrne/Horgan on the other wing. Thats a pretty good LOI career.

He is 32 now so I guess a decline is inevitable, he also played everywhere in Ireland. If you look at his career before he came to Dundalk, he probably overachieved, so fair play to him. He wasn't out of place in Kennys early years.

At least Athlone are getting in real players now, hopefully they will actually win a game.

Seen it a few times in the LOI players going from Champions League/Europa League nights to scrapping away in the First Division two years later

Spent a season at Harps and like every season since, done more complaining at referees and teammates than playing football. Always a talented player but poor attitude.

Lacked quality on the ball? He was miles ahead of anybody in Ireland for the number of assists supplied. The one thing you couldn't say is he lacked quality on the ball.

A large proportion of his assists came from set pieces. The majority I believe in fact.

I'm pretty sure Brian Gartland alone had 7-8 goals in two seasons running nearly exclusively from corners and free kicks.

That'll be Rhys McCabe, he's been signed up for a while already they just haven't announced it yet.

Though apparently we're strong favourites to get Forrester which is mad. Sign me up for overreacting and thinking we've got the league wrapped up if so.

Assuming it’s not the nearly 40 year old former LOI player or the young lad at Sunderland who made their bench recently, Google hasn’t been able to shed much light on him.

It wasn't Robbie Dunne that made Sunderland bench. It was Jimmy Dunne. I would say it's very possibly Robbie Dunne of Sunderland as I'm not sure how he's progressing there.

I'd be shocked if that was the case. As brilliant as he was last season for Harps you could see why he was getting set to hang up his boots. Maybe they want him to sign a contract in case there's some sort of injury crisis but even then he'd have to be training all year round to stay fit.

Some people, being you. Paddy might sign a player contract in case of emergency, but he's just been doing a kick about in training as far as I know and not taking part in full training. If he were signing as a player he'd surely have taken part in a preseason game too.

Strikers with a potential for 20 goals a season continue to be elusive for each of the Europa League qualified sides

Not sour grapes at all. Honestly, he's finished. He was superb for Harps, but he knew himself he was finished. He's not able for it at part-time level, no idea how he'd step back in as a full time player at Derry while balancing being academy director.

If he's signed forms as a player, it's only in case of emergency. Derry only had a fairly small squad over in IOM too, only 5 on the bench for that game including Paddy, and there were two trial players with them.

Would be very surprised if he plays much part at all.

Paddy's talents probably mean that he'd perform better in a full-time environment than a part-time one if they're at the same level because the stuff that comes easy to him is the technical stuff but the thing he finds harder is the fitness so the full-time environment would allow him to get that to a level where his technical abilities can come to the fore more.

That said I'd be surprised if he hasn't just signed forms as a "break glass in case of emergency" type thing. He'll probably train with them when it doesn't interfere with his academy job but doubt he'll be involved week in week out.

Nesta99
01/02/2019, 4:03 AM
When he was put through his paces at Dundalk they said it would take 12 to 18 months to get his fitness up to the level expected. It was disappointing to hear at the time as i'd have loved to have seen him in Dundalk colours even at the end of his career. The way it sounded it was a surprise that he was up to semi-pro or 1st division levels but thats where the talent shines through. He didnt need to be in top shape to produce some magic!! If he is registered as a player, even as cover for serious injury crisis he'd have to be training regularly regardless. He probably doesnt want to finish up playing, few player do, so being back at his hometown club might just have given him the hunger to hang on and maybe turn out occasionally in his candystripes!?

Declan Devine Devine on Radio Foyle said Paddy was only on the bench due to injuries and he won't be signing as a player, whether you believe it or not is another question,if he's keeping himself fit and he's happy to take a squad number then why not, I'd also suggest that if Derry would need him to take a squad number then recruitment isn't going very well!

His appearance against Cork City a few weeks later secured him cult hero status with his performance that night, his all action style and tough tackling.

He came on as a sub with 15 mins to go and is best remembered for trying to decapitate Shane Griffen in a tackle late. How that was only a yellow i'll never know. He will fit in well down in Waterford.

That's a bit of hype from the website contributor, as it is from you talking about decapitation.

Giffin wanted to play on when there was a Dundalk player down injured. Chvedukas didn't. He made his point in an overly robust way; I think Griifin got the message. Play was stopped.

In fairness that horrific challenge haunted Shane for the whole season.....Cup Final he spots Chvedukas out of corner of his eye on Dundalk bench....clearly traumatized....he passes ball straight to Dundalk player...

In that case Chvedukas must have been following him around all season!

Seriously - it was a really bad tackle - Its not great to be trivializing that sort of foul play. Normally when the opposing teams don't put the ball out there is a bit of eye balling, pushing shoving etc but not a two footed late lunge directed at an opposition players knees.

As I said he will fit in well at the RSC.

I don't think it could reasonably be described a tackle. It appeared to me that it was an intentional foul designed to stop the play. It was fairly obvious at the time that he was incensed by the lack of sportsmanship by Griffin. I thought it was poor form on both players, and Chvedukas could easily have got a red card.

It is always good craic when Cork fans adopt the moral high ground on this sort of stuff.

Jesting aside he is probably ecactly the 'run through walls' sort of player that would get legendry status among Cork fans!

edir: I forgot that Cork players dont tackle!!
