Time to be clear about all this.

APOEL FC of Nicosia - in tomorrow's draw - is not the same as Hapoel Be’ér Shéva of Israel (which may well play on the edge of the desert).

Nor is it to be confused with any of the other teams called "Hapoel" in Israel, among them: Hapoel Ashkelon, Hapoel Katamon Jerusalem, Hapoel Pétah-Tiqva, Hapoel Ramat Gan Giv'atayim, Hapoel Kfar-Saba, Hefa (Haifa), Hapoel Tel-Aviv-Yāfā (Tel Aviv) and Hapoel Ra'anana.

"Hapoel" in Hebrew is apparently capable of several meanings, which could indicate a trade union, socialist or works origin for the team/s in question, or just a group/club.

APOEL on the other hand is an acronym of its Greek name, "Athletic Football Club of Greeks of Nicosia".

In Nicosia at the moment of writing it is 37 degrees, in Beersheva it is 34. Toss for it.

You forgot Hapoel Split!

I need someone to explain this to me. Everyone is saying that Dundalk are the first loi side since Shels in 04 to reach last qualifying round of Champions League. What about Shamrock Rovers in 2011? How did they get in the Europa League group stages?

They lost in the CL 3rd round, and then went into a Europa playoff round against partizan. It was mentioned earlier

I dunno about you but for ages on Tuesday I thought (I remembered) that the Partizan game was 3rd QR and that Copenhagen came after that and then into the EL.

I was at a wedding the day of the Partizan match so it was all hazy. I remember watching text updates with a fellow Shels fan I had been inadvertently sat beside during dinner.

Thats exactly what I thought too, and I also thought that they lost 0-3 at home.

Good luck City, we are due a good result against a Belgian team.

Is he out on contract in November? If he is, €150k is not bad for a player who has struggled at quite a number of clubs.

"Not Bad" - are you serious? €150k would be a fantastic fee for Maguire, no matter when his contract expires

Best of luck to Sean, Greg Bolger and all the Cork team tonight. I hope the fans relish a magnificent occasion.

********. Cork had started very well too but Genk came into it more in last few minutes. Cork need three goals now.

Great assist by the ref there. Genk don't need the help, given how static Cork are.

Sloppy at the back again from Cork, you can't be making those mistakes at this level and think you'll get away with it, that's twice now a free shot/ header from 10 yards out ffs

Cork have been fairly poor. Lot of sloppiness.

No theyre not being let play these lads are a lot sharper now than they were last week and applying for more pressure. Two completely different sides and they are really showing their class this week.

Still should have done better for the second

Very disappointing this. We're very sloppy giving the ball away and our set pieces are woeful. Just not playing at the level that got us here unfortunately

Cork have created nothing from set pieces and they've had plenty of corners. There seems to be no pace out wide for Cork either. Very disappointed for them. Really wanted Cork to progress.

Be nice if they could nick a 2nd. The tie was over before halftime

paul_oshea
04/08/2016, 8:25 PM
These lads still arent as fit as they should be.

Cork played the wrong game first half sitting back which invited genk to push up and put pressure on them and it avtually worker against Cork the slower tempo. This half they have played a much higher tempo in the second half giving them little time on the ball and as Genk have tired they have reaped the rewards.

Hindsights 20/20 but these lads dont like the long ball and dont like being put under pressure.

If only for the coefficient.

They can't handle Sullivan at all.

Cork were too open in the first half. Bolger was particularly (and unusually) poor in the first half.

Caulfield was interviewed and he was saying they had to be cautious and not let them score an away goal early. Opposite to how Dundalk approached it

Caufield is negative i dont like the way he talks especially against teams not that much better.it reflected in the team tonight. Fenlon mark II in Europe.

You can be cautious but still press them they didnt even do that.

I thought we approached it the same way. We played very tight at the back and we're cautious not to over comitt going forward. Our 1st was a forae with a couple of mins to go in the 1st half. Think it was only our second solid attack.

I go away to post something, come back, game is over and Genk missed a penalty just before full time! Anyway, well done Cork. Wasn't to be but an excellent run all the same. Was always my hope 1 team would get through. From a progression perspective was hoping it would be Dundalk. I'd say many would have thought the same. Cork fans excluded for obvious reasons.
