how is patterson still at waterford, hes the best attacker by a huge distance in the first division yet graydon and kavanagh are getting bought instead of him.

Waterford are probably clinging onto Patterson, if they offload him, their slim chance of promotion goes up in smoke. Patterson and Junior will both walk at the end of the season for nothing, so you can imagine that Waterford will have their will tested with a few late bids before the window shuts...

Bastien Héry signing for Galway, the fella was clearly a very good player at one stage but he can’t run anymore, best of luck to him anyway…

He wont need to run in a Caulfield midfield just making up numbers. Hei might get a neck strain on top watching the ball go overhead.

He’s had plenty of training with us of that so his neck will be well able!

Didn't Farrugia sign for Rovers on the basis that they would be covering the costs his scholarship would have covered?
I think it might have been described at the time as such, but I guess when you move from UCD to another club, you are getting paid to play for the first time in most cases, so that is almost always more than the value of the scholarship anyway, so whatever way it is dressed up, it's a cash positive situation in the round when this happens.

Out of interest do UCD players have their own timetable and training schedule or is it early morning/evening training and college as normal. It was gas how the better rugby players at college in England were looked after and graduated hardly able to write their name, GAA players at college here. Sports scholarship students in my day got plenty of leeway on the academics but if Farrugia moved from UCD it'd would have been pretty tough to maintain a full-time football career and full time academia unless club and college were working together.

To the best of my knowledge, training tends to be mornings or evenings, and players academic schedules are therefore largely unaffected. And with the college tournaments all played during term when there are no exams, players don't miss out on much in the way of tuition. Also, since Covid all lectures were recorded, so possible to be remore and or catch up on a lecture at a later date. I'm sure if there was an instance of a clash, that an accommodation would be reached.

Cian Kavanagh is a big young lad, 188cm tall IIRC, he's a bit stiff which is why he rarely got a game for Waterford IMO, he's adaptable from what I have seen however and I think Derry may get the best out of him, only 18/19 years old.

We do lack a bit of height, TBF.

Another young lad coming, this time on loan. Second one in from Dundee United.

Well we solved that issue with Sonni Nattestad....

(Id have assumed that Carlton Palmer was the tallest player in LoI but turns out he was a mere 6'3).

Harps have signed 32 year old goalkeeper James McKeown from Grimsby Town. 400+ appearances for Grimsby, mostly between League Two and Conference. Has Ireland caps at underage level.

Cian Kavanagh was decent for Waterford but I'm surprised he got a move to Derry City. He likes a battle with defenders and works hard. He was not an automatic starter for us and was frozen out by Bircham for the end of last season after they fell out.
His best moment for Waterford was a wonderful goal to beat Sligo in the first game I was back at last season after the crowd restrictions were lifted.

John Caulfield has clearly not held any grudges for Hery pushing him over at the Waterford v Cork City game leading to a mass brawl.
Hery hasn't done much since that wonderful season he had back in 2018. He's been to Linfield, Derry City, Bohs, Finn Harps and now Galway since he left in 2019!

Bray keeper Michael Kelly has got a move to League Two Carlisle United. Surprised at that one as he’s not up to Premier Division standard. Not that Carlisle would be a great move for a PD keeper to go to either but you get my point

They are, but still and all, to jump a couple of thousand miles like that to a second division side in a league which has serious problems (fans were banned for almost a decade after the Port Said riots right up until last year) is...an adventure, let's say.

Though I guess he was working on it in the background while at Harps, hence agreeing to terminate his contract and finding a new club so quickly (which I guess is what's most random - yet probably isn't)

His family are Egyptian, and he probably fancies a nice bit of Winter sun 🌞 . Yoyo had one brilliant season when him and Collie shot the lights out in Div 1, but outside of that season he was always inconsistent. He was never the hardest worker or the fittest player on the park, and easy to see how he wasn't for Duffer at Shels on that basis, and Harps never likely to suit his game at all. Best of luck to him, nice lad by all accounts

Yoyo is a decent player he got unlucky with a mid season injury at Shels. His sudden move from Shels to Harps was really odd, after the end of the 2021 season he had been announced as re-signed for 2022, he was then the only men's first team player in Umbro's photoshoots for the new Shels kit and then a couple of weeks later he randomly signed for Harps

Aymen Ben Mohammed made a similar move a few years ago too, back to his parents homeland I believe. He was a devout Muslim and I think moving back to a muslim country had a big draw for him. Maybe the same applies for Yoyo.

He's at Le Havre in France, but missed the last year or so after a second cruciate knee injury in six years.

He had been sent out on loan before that (to Turkey) so not sure if he has a future in France.

Really bad injury timing as he was an international regular but it's hard to see him making the World Cup squad now

Pretty sure he was told, mid-way through Shels pre-season, by Duff, that he wasn't wanted and to find a new club.

Never really looked interested at Harps. Has undoubtedly got technical ability, but work rate really let's him down.

He worked hard for Shels in his limited games despite being played out of position and the fans liked him too, aside from Boyd we haven't had anyone else up front this season Yoyo would have been a better fit for Duff's system must have been some issue in pre-season or a personality clash that he followed Duff's advise to go and walk away from his contract

Portadown could have offered him a more friendly deal allowing him to still live in Scotland and fly in for games/limited training sessions which some UK players have had with IL and LOI teams over the years

Would be somewhat surprised if they are offering 52 week contracts, but never know.

Suppose it's easier to get back home from Portadown than Galway, if that matters to the lad. Or maybe Paul Doolin talks a good game?

That was a píss take, some nutter Harps fan wanted to make himself feel better about Russell signing for us over them, so he invented that we offered Russell a 52 week contract on huge money, which of course is utter nonsense. The fella has left us after a month and signed for a PT relegation favourite in the Irish League apparently.
