He's been very aggressively marked by Cuellar so far at Villa, but still managed to put in a beautiful cross on the turn that Bendtner should have scored. Might have a bit more freedom now Hutton is on.

He's working his boll0x off v Villa and is terrorising the left wing. One lovely deliver in particulary. Best player for Sunderland.

He had a later header on 89 minutes, very good effort, on target but the keeper had
a lot of time to see it as it was from a good distance out.

Work rate and pace wise, I think Coleman and McClean are evenly matched. Skill wise and physicality, I think McClean is superior.

Personally I think McClean has a great chance of carving out a very solid top level career for himself. Whether he will be a superstar, world class player, I dont know. That as much as anything needs alot of luck.

I think Coleman has suffered with second season syndrome and injuries this year. Certainly not to be written off. I think most would like to see him improve his defensive side of his game. He is at a great club and still has great potential. I just think he is a long way off the finished article.

I think it's fairly clear at this point that both Moyes and Trapattoni see Coleman as a full back, they just don't think he's ready to play there yet, whereas Trap clearly does see McClean as a winger, and a better one than Coleman at that. I think he's right on both counts.

Re McClean's fitness fanaticism - Derry coaches had to tell him to stop doing roadwork during pre-season for fear he'd do himself an injury. Suspicion was he agreed but kept doing it and didn't let on...

When they heard about that on OWC, they assumed he was tarmacing. Put them right off! ;)

Direct free kick too. Doing his countrymen at Aston Villa a favour.

From BBC Sport:
A free-kick 22 yards out is curled around the wall by James McClean and into the net. It's a decent free-kick but Adam Bogdan should have done better. He got a hand to it but not enough. Bad news for Bolton, but good for Wigan and Villa.

Yes a good free, but I think it would have been a comfortable save for Given, not
exactly in the top corner or anything like that. Only seen it once on a stream though.

No idea what is going on with the wall, if I had a wall built like that I would ask them to knock it down again,
he has basically just blasted it through the gap left in the wall when the Sunderland player occupying it stepped aside.

Very odd story by Emmet Malone in this morning's Irish Times

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2012/0430/1224315361252.html

McClean to benefit from a senior player not traveling, possibly for private reasons.

The Ireland manager refused to name the player or provide details of his difficulty, insisting that he could not say anything until next week, but the tone of his comments suggested that the issue is a personal one rather than one of fitness.

Here we go again...

An unlikely yet interesting prospect popped into my head there. Given Doyle's lack of form for most of this season, were Trap to take this into account and also take into account McClean's terrific season, what if Doyle was dropped and McClean started. Trap could stick McClean and McGeady on the wings and Duff up front with Keane in a similar partnership to that 10 years ago at the World Cup.

Not saying it's possible or even probable due to a number of factors (not least the value of Doyle's workrate), but it would be a very exciting line-up.

If it was a choice between McClean and Duff up front I would definably go for McClean his strike rate is 0.23 whereas Duff's is 0.13

I think McClean would make a pretty good striker in fact but Duff is 100% a winger.

Keane's career strike rate is 0.36 so McClean's rate compare very well with that especially considering he plays on the wing.

In fact if he was play as a striker I would not be surprise if he out scored Robbie!!

Out of interest how many games are McCleans stats based on? versus Duffers?

AlaskaFox

I'd imagine McClean's stats are greatly boosted by his performance in the LOI First Division with Derry.

Charlie Darwin

His strike rate in the First Division is only marginally higher than his strike rate in England, 1 in 3 games as opposed to 1 in 4. His best return was in the Premier Division last year when he was almost 1 in 2 before joining Sunderland.

'Martin O'Neill backs James McClean for Euro 2012 selection': http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17963643

"I would be advocating James to join the Republic of Ireland squad absolutely," said O'Neill.

"Nothing will faze James."

O'Neill added:"I'm not in a position to tell Trapattoni what to do.

"He has done marvellously to get the Republic of Ireland through the Group and therefore those players who can gone and done something for him, I can understand that loyalty.

"But James will certainly not let him down."

O'Neill insisted that the Derryman could not be more than "a bit player" in the Republic's campaign next month.

"I actually think that he could become a significant part but that's entirely up to the manager."

Well I initially got the stats from soccerbase

http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=10515

http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=58543

So Duffs are 350ish and McClean 18, however I also got his average with Derry City and the average there is almost exactly the same
and it gives and overall figure of 0.244 from 94 games.
So whilst it is based on only a few games at Sunderland it does seem like a rate he might be able to maintain, however his last goal was a free
kick (but they count to!) and the one before was a while back so he may find it harder to score in the future but it is a bit early to say. If he scored in his next game it would bump his Sunderland right up, but then he might not score for a good while.

As I said the rates worked out pretty similar.

2008–2011 Derry City 73 (18) 18/73 = 0.246
2011– Sunderland 21 (5) 5/21 = 0.238

Overall 23/94 = 0.244

It's quite an interesting list if you look through it, although some may question it's validity.

Is Newcastle's Danny Simpson Irish?

Keith Andrews seems to be missing too, I suspect he may be Danny Simpson :)

Ha ha you should be worried, I have found a new stat site, the previous one I used (opta) is no longer available
however as I have found some new stats you should be worried as I can't 'unfind' them :)

How valid the stats are is a different matter.

The bad new from those stats is that we have no players in the top 100!!
So I would question their validity.

One thing they do show is that were are good in the air!! (Long Walters Doyle and Dunne).
We do very well in aerial battle won, so perhaps a call up for Delap is in order?

Just as well we are good in the air cos we are not so on terra firma ;)

Sorry to interrupt the stats analysis, but Martin O'Neill has indicated he'd like to try McClean wide right next season:

“Duff has the ability to play wide right, which he does for Fulham (http://www.tribalfootball.com/english-premier-league/fulham) on a regular basis. James hasn’t acquired that yet but simply because I’ve not played him in any other position than on the left.“

Over the course of next season I can see him being able to adapt to other positions, like wide right coming in on his left foot.

“He’s settling in wide left well and is adding a few strings to his bow but to be fair to Damien Duff, he’s been doing it a lot longer than James.”

Death threats have been directed at former Northern Ireland U-21 footballer James McClean following his selection to play for the Republic at the Euro 2012 finals next month.

Two of the messages directed at him on Twitter threatened to have him shot and also contained sectarian abuse.

...

[McClean] said: “Absolutely honoured and couldn't be happier to have been called up to represent my country at the euros no better feelin! #COYBIG #ireland #euro12”

This was met with messages of congratulations, but also some posts that were full of sectarian abuse and threats to kill.

One Twitter user, with the account ‘RobbieLittle@PotKettleBlack3’, posted: “F*** up your dirty fenian b****** il make sure you get shot when you set foot back into gods country #FTP.”

Another using the name ‘James W Magee@JamesWMagee07’ posted: “U deserve to be shot for that comment!! Your playing for Ireland and not the country you were born in (NI). #p****”

Both messages have since been deleted.

They really don't do themselves any favours, do they?

McClean has nothing to apologise for.
The nature of the abuse and death threats are a serious development. Neil Lennon withdrew from the NI team just before a game (and retired altogether) after death threats were directed against his family.
Are times any different now? I'd hope that these vile cowardly creatures can be traced and prosecuted.
