View Full Version : James McClean M Wrexham b.1989

Absolute Joke McClean has been omitted. Okay I can understand Trap staying loyal to certain players, but McClean is probably the most in-form Irish player at the minute and has shown that he can cut the mustard in the Premiership. No disrespect to some of the players included but some are average players, hardly getting on for their respective team. Surely McClean deserved a chance to impress Trap and surely Trap must be somewhat curious to try McClean out.

If McLean keeps banging in the goals and wowing the EPL fans/pundits/press till the end of May would you bring him? I know I would.

I'm neither surprised or upset that he's been omitted. He's been in great form, but he's only played 11 games yet.

He'll yet feature against the Czechs. Coleman and/or McGeady Will pull out.
The one thing that annoyed me about that article was this:
"The midfielder, who was born in the North, but has opted to represent the Republic, received clearance from FIFA to do so earlier this week."
When did this crap of spelling north with an uppercase "n" start? Also I'm pretty sure when I was born in 1984 my country was called Ireland and not Republic. I missed that memo.

his directness, freshness and youthful enthusiasm would be a welcome addition to the squad similar to steven reid in wc 2002. very disappointed he not involved in this squad. in fact given the backward steps coleman and hunt have taken this season its baffling imo. squads always need freshening up

Thankfully this thread is back to football matters and James McClean again, please dont let it be another thread to descend back into all that northern rubbish.
Disappointed though not surprised he didnt make the squad. Clark is another baffling omission. Still think there is a decent chance he might get called up with some likely injuries in coming weeks.

Isn't that, er, a contradiction in terms? And that Darron, James and Shane would feel flattered by such a description...

It's part of the name of a country. It should be capitalised. Would you expect a journalist to write about 'the united states of America'? It's the same thing.

This. Sick and tired of scanning through threads, trying to pick out the football news from the caveman politics. Really wish the powers that be on here would keep all this "us and them" pathetic bull**** away from the football discussions.
It's meant to be all about this. :ball:

Surprised and disappointed McClean failed to make the squad. Thought it would be a perfect opportunity for Trap to try him out. The confirmation last night of his switch having been approved by FIFA had raised my hopes.

I understand the objections of people with no interest in eligibility matters having to trawl through masses of eligibility-related discussion, but how do you distinguish between what should and shouldn't be here though? In the case of McClean, discussion on his eligibility/switch is as relevant and appropriate in this thread as discussion of his football, surely?
The Stephen Ireland thread is as much a documentary of his private life as it is a discussion about his footballing abilities, for example.

It is correct punctuation to say the North, the South, the West when referring to a region. You'll just have to suck it up.

Ultimately, Stephen Ireland's private life, hair cut and taste in interior design still relate directly to the man himself. Too often threads on here take a players eligibility issues and turn it into a soapbox debate or history lesson on emigration.
Surely keep opinions on that whole subject separate. By all means discuss them if it floats your boat, but I think the majority on here are more concerned with matters that take place on the pitch.

Let's just say that it is totally unnecessary that the thread be littered with opinions about whether or not the North should be spelled with a capital N, or persistent repetitive surmise syndrome about the alleged angry/bitter state of James' mind when he pens a tweet, just for the sake of winding up.

Goal McClean! Calamitous stuff as I think it was Mertesacker goes down awkwardly as he receives a back pass, McClean seizes on it, surges down the left, and fires the ball low across Szczesny in to the far corner. Fair play advocates may not like that one.

Excellent goal from a narrow angle, keepers do not expect to get beaten from there.
Arsenal got one back.

Leaving him out is a very bold call by Trap. Coleman and Hunt had better hope they're fit in May /June.

Goal here, great finish, no fear. Mertesacker's fall was so awkward. He seems to be clutching his shin, I wonder what he injured.

Took his goal very well, had no right to score really the goal was a real bonus/
Difficult to watch on a crappy stream but he seemed to have a decent game but Arsenal had
the ball much of the time.
I expect he will be man of the match for Sunderland or thereabouts.
Got his goal from a narrow angle near the angle of the 6 yard box with a defender on him top strikers sort of gaol.

He had a decent enough game. Couple of sloppy passes but for the most part when he got the ball he was really positive. If i was to compare him to McGeady now i'd say he's not as fast but his end product seems much stronger at the moment. The two could probably learn a lot from eachother.
With Coleman still injured (I think) i wonder why he's in the friendly squad
he had an average game but took his goal extremely well. He is certainly more effective in the top third of the pitch than anywhere else. Pitch was atrocious though, i was surprised by that.

McClean wasn't to know the extent of Mertesacker's injury after he'd raced past him. Anyway, it's the ref's job to stop play, so play to the whistle. Great finish.

Can't say I really noticed what happen with the guy I just saw McClean getting on the ball.
There is no way McClean could have been expected to stop play in that situation it just look like he slipped or something,
there was no contact or anything to suggest he was injured. Dunno what was up with him but often those sort of injuries
turn out to be quite serious. It's really weird the way he went down, his heel seem to flick up really high.
Looks like he took an arrow to the knee.

I think he is on 4 now, definite 3 anyway.
Actually it 4, but one of those is FA Cup. So 4 from 10 appearances, 3 of those were as a sub.
That is some strike rate if he keeps it up.

I'm saying if McClean keeps this form up it'll be very hard to leave him out of the Ireland squad. Not many players try harder than Hunt, but on current form it'd be a shame if Hunt went and McClean didn't.

Baffled at the decision by Trapatoni: be faithful to those who got us to the finals, sure, but what possible harm is there in bringing-in the young talent and showing them around the premises, so to speak. A few training sessions with Robbie, Shay & co would do wonders for him slowly acclimitising him to the next level. Build up friendships, continue the good team mentality we have at the moment.
Jesus, imagine the pointers he could pick up from a few sessions alongside Duffer. Utterly baffled by this.

Very much agreed.
But why originally refer to the element relating to his heritage though? It's extremely relevant in this and a number of other cases.
And will continue to be so 'ad infinitum'...

I'm not referring to McClean's heritage though. I'm talking about threads being taken off topic by discussing matters not directly related to the player. McClean having an issue with being referred to as Northern Irish on Motd2 is fair game, but when threads get full of tired political discussions rather than anything directly related to the player, that's another matter. I don't think I'm alone in my frustration at seeing a few new posts in a thread and my immediate thoughts are "Great! Hopefully this is news about player X getting a transfer/being praised in the press/scoring a goal" or whatever, only to see it's another political discussion.

Except it's not political. Unless you live in a bubble.
Presumably the players themselves would at least recognise the relevance.

Maybe the McClean thread should be split into two: 'McClean: The football thread' and 'McClean: The politics thread'. Then we can do the same for attacks on Stephen Ireland's character and his football. Then perhaps one thread discussing Robbie Keane's performances for Ireland/Villa and another in which people can state that they like or dislike him.
Ignore the political discussion if it doesn't interest you. Many find it valid and worthy of discussion.

There's obviously a large difference of opinion on this topic among the forum member.
Maybe it's time the mods got involved to clarify the situation - after all what else are they there for?
So please mods let us know what the stance of Foot.ie on this subject is.
This will either stop people complaining about whwn other bring up the political side of the debate or stop those bringing up the political side of the debate from complaining when they are told to shut up and bring it to another thread.

But  what if the players themselves 'bring politics into it', like at least one has done, 'allegedly' ?
