I don't see the point in Mervue wasting money trying to keep themselves in the bottom 3 of the LOI for another season. Give someone else a go, and never allow 3 Galway teams into the LOI at once again! And root out whoever said a Salthill-Mervue derby game would bring a crowd.
If they got there on merit let them stay there until somebody else gets past them on merit.

About 75 at Mervue - Youths. Definitely no more than 80. Not including the sent-off Mervue player who left the ground with 20 minutes to play.
its not that long ago 1998 in fact in Stephen Kennys first game in charge of us only between 50-75 people showed.. This was a regular occurence of our crowds in the mid nineties.. Three short years later we were getting 5-6k at the fai cup semi final replay.. miracles can happen you know..

I'm not saying they should be booted from the league or anything! I'm just wondering why the club bothers when attendance is so critically low and falling instead of rising. I certainly have my doubts about the players level of interest after their red-carded player wouldn't even stay to watch the whole game.

They probably told him he had to buy a ticket.

Probably down to the Ireland game. I know it was over an hour and a half before any games K/O but people will use any excuse.
Rovers have sold-out their allocation of 1700 tickets for this Fridays game v the Pats. With more Rovers fans expected to sneak into the home sections and then Pats and neutrals, Id say we might see 4000+ in Inchicore this Friday.

The better guesses on Shligos attendances this year seem to come from the away support,so maybe we should wait on that figure:p

I wonder how many Fingal brought. There was 3 people in the 'away' section the first game in the showgrounds plus about 5 more in the 'VIP' section
Anyone know how many were at the boez v ucd game last night, friend of mine who was at it reckons about 1200, no real estimates over on the boez forum.

890 wouldn't surprise me; thought about 1000 at the time. 1500's nonsense. You'll see in the highlights tomorrow; have a picture of the stand that I can't upload for some reason?

It's a shame to see the stats on attendances at Scottish Division 2 and 3 levels. The league should be open to more flexibility to match-day kick-offs. I'd like to see a return to Saturday - Sunday fixtures. I remember Radio One giving coverage to games on Sundays.

Galway and Sligo being a derby should be attracting bigger crowds than that. Most clubs have an awful lot of work to do.
While it wasn't a great crowd, it was a horrendous night weather wise which has to have impacted on the crowd.

Yeah, sure, fair play to ye're support. On Galway's side though it's a bigger disappointment. I think the way they were invited to the Premier Division has always been a bit of a factor. On sporting merit they did not go out and win promotion and have the support and euphoria which might go with it.
That doesn't make sense to be honest. The season after they got up they had great crowds. But now it seems like complacency has set in and the crowds have dropped back.

14/09/2010, 2:17 PM
It's hardly an honourable way to win promotion after spending 5 whole seasons in Division One. They might have kept more of that great support if they had gotten there on sporting merit.
Probably not in fairness. That's been long forgotten by fans, they're just happy to be in the premier. How they got there is nothing to do with the fans.

And the fans didn't care at the time that they'd gotten promotion through dubious methods; hard to see why it should be a factor now.

Maybe it hasn't. I'm not saying for certain it had. There is such a thing as easy come easy go. Galway hadn't much of a pedigree in the Premier before they were invited in. 5 whole seasons they were in Division One before hand. They did not really earn their place on the field of play. I think it lingers.

Dubious methods of earning promotion might be bribing a referee, supporters acting a rival player, getting a match abandoned, going through the courts etc.
I would hardly describe getting promoted after a process that had been agreed on by all clubs at the start of that season, as "dubious".
Anway, back to the thread, as Galway Red says approx 150 Sligo supporters. It doesn't take a lot to put Galway United (or Galway sports) supporters off going to a home match - a bit of rain, a bit of sunshine, having to pay in (FAI Cup), or any other type of event.

Just on the Pats- Rovers game I would have thought it at just over 4k maybe.
Good crowd in UCD last night, obviously alot to do with the college opening back up for a new year, lots of free tickets given out, great game in the end so hopefully some come back for UCD's sake.

You are talking out your hole sunshine.
Galway United's crowds are following a similar path to the last few times in the premier, ie high in the first year and then declining thereafter until relegation a few years later.
Which is the way for a lot of provincial teams.

Which is the way for a lot of provincial teams. It wouldn't be bad if they were relegated and look at earning their place in the Premier League on the field of play. On Bray's form, there's a chance they'd beat Galway in a play-off against either Monaghan, Derry, Limerick, Waterford, Shelbourne or Cork.

No team in the division earned their place on the field of play that year. They all went through the same process that Galway did. I don't know why they're being singled out, especially as the playoff farce wasn't of their making.
I think it's pretty fanciful too to attribute their lower crowds to some sort of belated reaction to their selection for the premier division, when trends will show you that every club in Ireland gets worse crowds when they're not playing well.

At the end of the day I'm only expressing my own view. I have more respect for a club that earns their place on the field of play like Carlow, Tralee and Cobh are trying to do in the A Championship.
It's not Galways fault at all, they were invited, what club would decline the invitation? My point really is that had they earned their place on promotion than invitation it would have had a more longer lasting affect.

But history has shown that it doesn't make one iota of a difference. The crowds in Galway are following the same trends as they always have.
They're surely getting more home supporters at games then Fingal, Bray and UCD. Their crowd figures are being inflated by getting big away followings from the bigger Dublin clubs

Ya I wouldnt have had it at 300, probably about 200 considering not just all the lads standing but a good few to the right sitting down.
Anyway dont Galway have official attendances for away crowds??
