O'Neill to take in Dundalk v Hadjuk Split in the Europa League this week. Quoted in Indo today saying he wants to cast his eye over Dundalks 'young guns', presumably Towell and Boyle.

Also said something to the effect that even if they play well that doesn't mean anything in terms of whether they can play international level.

I know there is more to what you are getting at here. I hope we are wrong in how we analysed the analyser, but there were some worrying/strange snippets from him at this world cup.

What did you make of Martin on ITV the last few weeks?
The Beeb/ITV panel banter is frequently cringe inducing isn't it?
It can be very stilted at times.... to be fair, Martin was perfectly fine at it and
it seemed like a nice gig... all the same there are times when it all seems beneath a credible international manager to have to engage in occasional panel banalities....
Just when on topic of the World Cup and Panels.... there were times when an ITV/BBC panel were talking and the camera would zoom in on a pretty girl in the crowd etc etc... and linger for a number of moments as if almost tempting a panellist to make a dodgy comment.... and suffer the consequences of our politically correct society;)

Good to see the FAI have confidence in us beating Germany! Don't think MONROY would be too happy. COYBIG.

I think they should have left the tweet, lull the Germans into complacency.
In fact we should apologise in advance for what we know will be a poor performance as we are "in a period of transition".
"We would like to apologise in advance to the German people for what we know will be an embarrassingly poor performance
from the Irish team, we are in a period of transition and hope to be able to give your lads a decent game in about 30 years time. All the best. #FAIreland."

Hope he has his ticket. Game is close to a sell out.
Arguably Messrs Towell, Boyle, Gannon, Hoban, Horgan & Shields are well able to play at a higher level. While Towel is the most promising and receives the most accolades, the other 5 are equally as good as towel in their respective positions.
I would worry more about losing Boyle or Shields in the transfer window and the damage or would do to our title aspirations as opposed to losing Towel

It's not daft to think that part of the Irish national team manager's job is to be up to speed on Irish football. For a whole host of reasons.
If he can help to promote the Irish game then that too is a benefit. It sends a message to the public that maybe there's something worth watching and if that message gets through, as well as the message being sent by creditable European performances, then that can only be a good thing.
Going to Bray versus Rovers in itself is not going to help us qualify but it's hard to argue that it's not the right thing to do.

There's also the line of thinking that Martin O'Neill is a football man who likes going to football matches. A bit of an alien concept to the Irish psyche alright, but he has been living in England for most of his life.

The interview on the Last Word was interesting. O'Neill spent much of it slagging Keane. The latter was occasionally amusing but the audience found everything he said absolutely hysterical, even if he wasn't trying to be funny. He was his usual curmudgeonly self on many issues. Glad to hear him say though that Ireland never feared anyone although he talked up Germany big time - sorry ONEWHOKNOCKS. O'Neill ended it by saying Keane wasn't a friend. They haven't seen each other socially. They have a job to do and that is be successful with Ireland.

I'm not necessarily saying you're in the wrong here, but I've started reading Soccernomics by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski and its opening anecdote about Roberto Mancini reminded me very much of you generally, Paul. In a purely affectionate way, of course. :)
A few years ago, the data department at Manchester City carried out a study of corner kicks. City hadn't been scoring much from corners, and the analysts wanted to find out the best way to take them. They watched more than four hundred corners, from different leagues, over several seasons, and concluded: the most dangerous corner was the inswinger to the near post.
The beauty of the inswinger was that it sent the ball straight into the danger zone. Sometimes an attacker would get a head or foot to it and divert it in from point-blank range. Sometimes the keeper or a defender stopped the inswinger on the line, whereupon someone bashed it in. And occasionally the ball jut swung straight in from the corner. All in all, the analysts found, inswingers produced more goals than outswingers.
They took their findings to the club's then manager, Roberto Mancini, who like almost all managers is an ex-player. He heard them out politely. Then he said, more or less: "I was a player for many years, and I just know that the outswinger is more effective." He was wrong, but we can understand why he made the mistake: outswingers tend to create beautiful goals (ball swings out, player meets it with powerful header, ball crashes into net) and beautiful goals stick in the memory. The messy goals generally produced by inswingers don't.

Sorry, I'm just not having this "I'm a visionary for pointing out that TV isn't as good as attending a real match live" nonsense.
I honestly can't think of anyone who would argue that telly is better, other than Trap. Most of us don't have the luxury of having the time and money to scout Irish players live though. Martin O'Neill gets paid for it. Trap took the p1ss big time.

I'm not even sure Trap could credibly have argued that. It's obvious he resorted to watching DVDs as a substitute for attending live games out of convenience.

So what is it then?
They're using it as a stepping stone or else it just hasn't worked out for them elsewhere with injuries or whatever. Obviously LOI isn't a great level for aspiring international players to be at but it's no worse than plugging away in the SPL or League One.

I found it interesting to hear Keane laughing at O'Neill's stories. And of course, O'Neill taking the pi$$ out of him was great. They seem to et on well but gerat to hear O'Neill say they're not friends and they have a job to do.
I imagine very few people would get away with that with Keane other than people he has huge respect for

In saying that, Paul needs to be asked again and again as I don't remember his declarations being that out of left-field.

I like that Fixer.
I had said Bonnie, from watching him live around 2011 or so or maybe earlier, that the space he leaves which you didnt see on TV, he was getting caught out all the time, also from corners, from set pieces etc etc, his positioning was poor. I was being told on here by the usual posters who always thank a post going against my opinion or view on this forum that he wasnt that bad etc, i said he would be found out and was crap, i was right, as i was about forde, as i was about trap and his failings and many others unfortunately(you gots me on Seamie though he never gave away a penalty(s)!). Just because you saw it later doesn't mean i wasn't right from the start.
DI, except I'd have pointed out the inswinger is of course more effective ;).

O'Neill on the Dundalk-Hajduk Split game and potential League of Ireland call-ups generally: http://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/3942/ireland/2014/07/23/4977225/oneill-hails-league-of-ireland-potential?CMPID=FBIRE_140723_oneill
"I thought Dundalk actually played very well and that on the evening they were very unlucky," said O'Neill, speaking on Today FM.
"There's no reason why this should not be a foundation for players to go and push on [to a higher level]."
However, despite lauding the potential of the domestic scene, the Derry native suggested that players would need to feature at a "higher level" in order to cope with the rigours and expectations of international football.
"There might be one or two [players] from the League of Ireland," said O'Neill.
"But I think, obviously, the higher the level, the better chance you might have coping with international football."
