but those people who do not follow the LOI , probably have never even heard of MNS.
For me More Advertising and more Live Matches are the way to go.

So you reckon that, to compensate for people not having seen the LoI highlights show on TV, we should have more TV coverage? How will people know to watch games on TV if they don't know to watch highlights on TV?

No but I've seen MNS on weekly which cost the FAI 4 million euro. And I've seen the CPOs which is one of the FAI's best initiatives.

Sure more could be done, but frankly the clubs themselves are more useless than the FAI on this front by a country mile.

While it is the responsibility of the FAI to "big up" the League (and to be fair they have improved on this) it is down to clubs to highlight individual matches. Some clubs do this very well Sham Rovers (through gritted teeth :)) have in my opinion been far and away the best at promoting games/Tallaght etc. Far too many clubs appear to wait for media coverage and consequentially it does not happen.
Anyway back to thread, and best of luck to Pats - good city to visit so hope for fans that arrangements (dates) are agreed soon. Tough draw but
should get full house at home (wherever it is played) hopefully to see another great result for Irish football

well you would obviously have to advertise the matches , and advertise the MNS show ( an ad during the 6pm news every evening might help).
Its only an idea , i am not an advertising Guru;)

I think its the FAI's responsibility to Advertise and Big up the League Of ireland try and get some major sponsors behind the league .
Just like the GAA have done.
They have Guiness/Vodafone etc all bigging up the All-Ireland championships every year.

Ever see an Ad on TV promoting the league of Ireland ?

In fairness to the FAI, the GAA themselves are pretty rubbish at "bigging up" games - the Vodafone and Guinness advertising is all at the behest of those companies trying to maximise their own returns. Look at the championship attendences prior to the big guns coming on board and they're nothing like present figures. For an example of the GAA on their own, look at what they usually do for the league (half full Parnell Park) versus what they could do for the league (oneTyrone-Dublin game under lights in a sold out Croke Park). If the FAI had a sponsor prepared to seriously back the league, and not just be forced into it as a condition of getting on the international bandwagon, it would be much more likely to see a strong coherent campaign.

Think roma played behind closed doors too and it was televised. Not sure if was Roma tho. It was because the ref Frisk got hit with a coin coming off at half time.
I remember watching Real Madrid play Roma at the Olimpico that season. It was on the telly somewhere.

Does that mean no Pats fans can attend the away leg?
For the game above, there were cheers when Real scored. They had a shot of a small group of Real fans, don't know if they were just club officials or other fans.

Its done to lack of advertising..............which falls on the shoulders of the FAI-WASTERS

Why should the FAI do the advertising for any individual club ?

Seriously -what's with the welfare mentality ? Surely club's should be advertising their big games for themselves.

dcfcsteve
07/08/2009, 5:03 PM
Yes. They had to knock something like that figure off the national team highlights rights to get MNS on prime time.

Allegedly....

Allegedly....It was referred to more than once to a room of about 40 LoI fans by Fran Gavin. RTE were fairly blunt about not wanting to show MNS by all accounts.

Sheridan
07/08/2009, 7:53 PM
Con Murphy described it to me as "sheer fantasy", but no-one in RTÉ has ever commented when presented with the fact that Fran Gavin and others in the FAI have made that assertion in public and private. It's entirely plausible and almost certainly true.

Just a note to Pat's fans. The away leg will be played without the presence of home fans due to message banners against Ujpest in the previous round. Was told what it said but can't remember now.

Don't know if this stops Pats fans from travelling over, I just taught i'd let ye know in case it does.

It's already been mentioned a few times, AR, apparently Steaua are appealing the decision. It would apply to away fans also.

Atletico Madrid got a ban for the same thing in the Champions League last year. They had a large tv screen in the stadium (don't know if Steaua Bucharest have such a thing) and it had a live video of fans gathered somewhere in Madrid. When Atletico scored you could hear the fans celebrating.

But don't you see? The GAA are so cute that they get their sponsors to advertise their product for them! Maximum exposure; minimum expense. Why can't the FAI be as cute?

Because brands want to be associated with Gaelic games. It would bring positive benefits to their product.

Conversely - the LOI's image problem means that very few brands see any value in it. And as TV is by-far the most expensive advertising, why would brands use it to associate their products with something that has a poor image ?

Simples.

Two questions :

1 - If a LOI team made it into the Champions League group stages, do you think RTE would show their matches live ? Would Bohs or whoever v Olympiacos get bigger ratings than Man Utd v Galatasaray ? Awkward position for RTE

2 - Anyone know how much Bohs got from UEFA for winning the league ? Article in the mail saying all national champions get £170k which seems a lot

Their contract with UEFA obliges them to act as host broadcaster for any Irish team that qualifies. They're not happy about it.

What? Never heard that....:DYeah, he was warming up on the sideline in front of us and someone jokingly shouted 'Fabio ya bollo' etc. and he looked up and gave a dirty look...so of course all of us started shouting abuse at him then and 1 or 2 fans went nearer the fence and he gestured for them to come onto the pitch...then the stewards moved him away. I love that about the LOI, players responding to abuse the whole time:).

Any word on tv coverage.

The rights are still Pats' to sell at this stage (?) so should be able to get a bidding war going. They all risk being accused of neglecting the league in favour of foreign teams if they don't show it.

tv3/setanta would want to show it in case Pat's lose, and rte would want to get it in case they win.

Unfortunatley I think I'd be safe enough to offer to run round the brandy stark ****** nekid if that were to happen.

But what I was getting at is we have ammunition against the tv stations if they don't show this. rte, because well they're rte. And tv3/setanta because they have the irish rights to the competition from the group stages on, and would in effect stand to gain if pat's go out.

You are completely correct, my mistake. Celtic-Arsenal is in the CL, not the EL.
