I never imagined Pats even drawing this game, absolutely amazing result, one of stand out wins from a LOI side in history.

Fantastic result for St Pats. It would be one of the best results in europe for a LOI club if Pats can see their lead through the 2nd leg next week in Russia.

Yep excellent result tonight for Pats...............................I still hope o'brien gets lost in Russia somewhere :)
Not too bad of a result for Derry either 1-0 defeat in Bulgaria, tie very much in the balance

Astounding 2nd half by Pats

For all the ball the Russians had, we had 3/4 good chances

I think Derry have a better chance of going through than us but I'll enjoy this result for a while

Unbeaten at home in Europe this millenium :D

Great result from Pats. People say the summer football gives the Irish teams an advantage but the Russians couldn't use that excuse.

Absolutly amazing night, Im still in shock i thought we would get hammered, Fabio is fast becoming a Pats legend,

Good result for Derry aswell, fill out the Brandywell next week get a great atmosphere going and i really think they can go threw, This time next week could be an amazing night for LOI fans

Speaking honestly, I don't think we'll go through. We can defend against them alright, but our attack this season has so bad. That's what might let us down.

Here is the goal and two links to the CSKA fans. If you look at the first one they seem to be making some kind of protest to Uefa?

Fantastic result for Pats given the number of injured first team players, guarantees Kenna`s job? A clear endorsement of the European Competition benefits of a summer season

From what I saw of the Derry game, it was a very professional performance from the Candystripes ,fair play. Hopefully a packed hostile Brandywell, an aggressive playing performance and the right ref will get you the two goal cushion needed to get through.

Definitely. Given how awful Pat's were against Valletta, and how awful they were for the first half hour of this match - when Krylya passed through their midfield at absolute will - it's quite incredible that Pat's got anything out of this match. Krylya were very poor up front, but you got the feeling that once they ticked, it'd end up 4 or 5. Even then, I lost count of how many last-ditch blocks Pat's put in.

But Pat's seemed to gain confidence around the half hour when it was still 0-0, and amazingly had the four best chances of the game in the second half, even though Krylya were still dominating play. O'Brien and Guy (I think?) both missed one-on-ones. Excellent goal from Fabio too; I thought it hit the side netting (couldn't see from the new stand, and he couldn't possibly have scored from the angle he was at) until everyone went nuts.

If Krylya have Koller back for the second leg, I can still see a 4-0 score, but you never know now. Superb result; well done Pat's.

(And a decent enough result for Derry too, BTW. Though we'll have to teach you how to keep clean sheets in Bulgaria. :) )

Check out this 'match report' from rte.ie for the Derry game..............if I ever saw a match report written on the basis of just seeing a scoreline this is it.

Derry City's Europa League hopes hang in the balance after the Candystripes fell to a 1-0 defeat against CSKA Sofia in the Bulgarian capital.

Kostadin Stoyanov scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute to round off a long spell of pressure by the home side that gives them a crucial advantage heading into next week's return leg.

But Stephen Kenny's men will be confident of turning the tie back in their favour at the Brandywell after a brave defensive performance prevented CSKA from doubling their advantage.

And the result was all the more welcome given Derry's poor recent run of form which had seen the club manage to win only one of their last six matches - against Skonto Riga in the previous round.

great result for pats. looks like guy had a great chance to make it 2-0. totally outpaced the defence. great finish from o'brien. they still have to score 2 to win and if pats could nick an away goal they could see them off.

might be the end of the road for derry but you never know.

A stunning and outstanding result for Pats! Magnificent! It would still be a major shock if they progressed, but at least they have a good chance.

How much money have Dundalk given Pats indirectly through Fabio's goals???

Great effort from Derry, as Stephen Kenny says it like it is:

"One-nil down with 90 minutes left...so were definately still in it. We have our work cut out, but the possibilities still exist."

Congratulations to St Pats on a brilliant win.

Both teams can be free of any fear in the 2nd legs - all that could be asked of either team was that they would keep the possibilities alive for the 2nd legs- they have nothing to lose in trying to win.

Will it be all ticket in the Bradywell?

You do feel though that Pats will need an away goal out there as I'd expect the Russian side to score a couple goals at home.

http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/stoyanov-ends-candystripes-resistance-but-europa-dream-remains-intact-1847613.html

goes along with exactly what i said on the other thread re:cska, when ORA ignorantly pointed out that i wouldn't know the difference between a stuffed or blown up one

Derry had the only corner of the first half and had the best chance in the first half on 31 mins. Sofia were good for all of 15 mins, in the second half. Apart from that, thats all, Derry contained them very well and did exactly the job required for 99% of the game, cska are nothing special - going on that performance at least and are definitely beatable.

I mentioned on the links thread, that they played very well and more than matched CSKA, for pace and speed, their technically not as good as CSKA, but they played very well, limiting cska to long range shots etc, it wasn't edge of your seat stuff and they looked very comfortable compared to bohs away 2 weeks ago. I honestly thought watching as somewhat a neutral observer that they were going to get the draw, even thought they might score after going 1-0 which they should have (was that farren that shot straight at the keeper?) from a corner in the last 8 mins or so. The best thing I noticed and again its ssomeething simple but down to good management is, when they got the ball on the edge of their box, they played hte simple pass, they didn't hoof it up to the lone man and hope for the best, they played the simple ball out to the wing (a short 5 - 10 metre ) pass or to a midfielder, who in turn would turn towards his own goal or turn sideways, to wait for support, buy a bit of time, and lay off another short pass to someone in support. ALthough they didn't create many chances because of this they held possession well and it wasn't wave after wave of attack. I know im going on and on about this but i was seriouslly surprised at how organised and controlled an Irish side could be - awat from home against deemed superior opposition. HOpefully next week they can keep this side of things but also look to create more chances, when they did go at cska they looked to be able open them up.

If pat's can score then they should be able to hang on and not concede 3.

Derry capable of winning at the brandy, depends on which team show up. But think sitting back and playing on the counter will suit CSKA. Likely Derry will have to score, at least, 3 to win the tie, which is a bit of an ask.

Against the odds, St Patrick's Athletic overcame Russian side Krylya Sovetov Samara 1 -0 last night with Declan (Fabio) O'Brien getting the crucial winner - his third goal in European competition in three games.

That really was an amazing night - I'm still hoarse today

Pat's played some great stuff & the goal was only deserved. Sovetov are a very decent side & I'd still be worried about the away leg, but Pat's definetly deserved the win last night - they looked a perfectly ballenced side after half time when Bobby came on - Him & R.Guy on the 2 wings & Fabio coming through the centre - all with such pace - I think Pats may have stumbled on a formation that could save their League season too.

:ball:
