Are Longford working off a far smaller budget this year?

Have Barrow actually seen him play!
If he doesn't do well, his career might be on the Furness. Seriously though, and it's a topic that comes up from time to time on social media, and it's an uncomfortable truth, but the majority of League 2 clubs all have bigger budgets than nearly all clubs here bar Rovers,Dundalk and Derry. And as long as that's the case, players will always leave a LOI club that potentially could be in Europe for the mundane safety of double or triple his wages, slogging it out in the early rounds of the FA Cup or FA Trophy.

From what I heard before the playoffs yes is the answer.

17/12/2022, 8:58 PM
To be fair they probably still have the smallest budget. It's well known that Wexford have double theirs to ~€5K/week.
They're a bit uninspiring in my view. Doona did nothing for City, interesting to see how Longford do.
Maybe but i doubt it , smaller than Cobh,Athlone,Longford,Kerry....hardly,no way the likes of Ludden,Curran,Connolly and the two or three more expected signings are playing for peanuts. The rest have bigger dosh no doubt about that.

Paddy Barrett signs for Shels. Had a good season with us in 2021 but wasn’t the same player after a long layoff in 2022. Had a year left on his contract but we agreed to release him. For his own sake I hope he can get himself back to somewhere close to what he was.
I see he only made 3 starts towards the very end of last season, if he has a full injury free pre-season under his belt he could be a very shrewd signing for us replacing Negru we are well stocked in central defence with his addition so not dependent on him playing all 36 games

I think Gers point was that Rory Feely is a terrible footballer and likely one of the worst players to make the switch to the UK recently. It only makes sense as a signing if Barrow haven't actually seen him play.

Feely is a good athlete and that is about the extent of it as far as I've seen. Fair play on getting the move.

Also the value that a player will get noticed by top sides 100x if playing in England-, 1000x if playing well more than the LoI. Harsh truth.

Fair dues to Feely's agent- his performances were inconsistent, to say the least. I don't think that he's absolutely terrible (I'm in a minority amongst bohs fans) but has a habit of missing tackles, and also giving cheap fouls. He cost us points, but I felt Ciaran Kelly cost us more, while both got a move away. Baffled.
If both thrive when away it will point to coaching issues under the previous management team. Hoping for some signings for our defence early in the new year.

Much of Kerry's squad will be announced tonight when Dennehy talks to the press - will largely be a mixture of last season's under-19s and KDL players, but will be surprised if Matt Keane at least doesn't come on board.

Also off to Fleetwood -- David Harrington, Cork City's (Men's) Young Player of the Year, for a fee believed to be in 6 figures. Harrington will compete for the keeper's jersey with Fleetwood's current number one Alex Cairns, and with Jay Lynch and Leicester City loanee Jakub Stolarczyk (www.therealefl.co.uk 19 Dec).

The third sensible announcement of the day. It's a pity common sense abandoned them when it came to the season tickets.
I thought the six figure sum was what Everton were paying but he failed the medical ?

You can take us out of that line, might have around €1m in the bank still, but new owners running a tight ship post p6 and will be doing so for next few years by all accounts.
Maybe no harm as won't be outbidding Rovers and Derry for any players so just need to be 'the best of the rest' until reserves / monies in build up, either via euro prize money or main owners biz shares sales etc.
That said will be much closer next season with Pats well positioned, Sligo too, maybe one of Shels or Bohs will all fancy euro ambitions.

"The 22-year-old is set to move to Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed, six figure fee". (Therealefl website, today) Of course, six figure fees would range from 100,000 to 999,999 and Everton's idea of six figures could be a lot bigger than Fleetwood's :-)

Some signing for Treaty and with the retention of Curran means serious quality in the squad.Only thing is Tommy Barrett will have to drop his constant ..we have the lowest budget in the league.....jibe now .
He didn’t sign back for Treaty because that’s where he was offered the most money. He’s an amateur/part timer with treaty can’t imagine he’s getting anything other then petrol money every other week.

Yeah that's a weird one especially for a club with their ambition and resources. Wasn't upset to see the back of him from Bohs.

Was close enough for third last season in fairness. Not much between Dundalk and Pats. It does seem very much like it will be Rovers and Derry again, with the best of the rest scrapping for third. Odds are that it will probably be the same top 4 again. (Though, as Eric Morecombe might have put it “not necessarily in that order”)

Well we all know Stephen doesn’t like to make his signings too early :p

Paddy will be a very good signing for Shels if he gets back to fitness. Only 29 too, thought he might be older.
Wouldn’t have been keen on Ryan myself but not too bothered, we got similar comments when signing Graydon and he has been a star. I think Diallo was written off on here as likely to be a flash in the pan come and go type signing but oozes class so we will see with Tadhg if he gets a chance.

No offence to Ryan, but he’s had lots of chances at clubs and the only club he flourished at was Treaty. I think that might be an indication that’s his level don’t wish any bad will on the player, from what I’ve seen from his time at Waterford I didn’t feel like he was good enough for us or premier division level. He hasn’t seemed to impress or progress his development at any club since. I would say strange one from Derry but there’s a serious lack of quality keepers within the league. Good luck to him hope he lives up to the potential and hype.

Apparently, 5 Killarney Celtic players, including a goalkeeper and two strikers are joining Kerry, so certainly doesn't seem that local players will need much convincing to come on board.
Phoenix Patterson joined Fleetwood Town for undisclosed fee. That's not a surprise. Hope we can hold on to Junior Quitirna now.

Difference is Ryan is 25 years old and has had a few opportunities before Derry. In saying that he'll be fine as your second choice. He has a howler or 2 in him but if he's only going to see game time in a handful of games a year that's not really a problem.

According to the Indo Johny Kenny signing on loan for the real Rovers having looked like he was going back to Sligo at first.
Properly underwhelmed at that news.
Scored a few goals for Sligomin one season went to Scotland did nothing at Celtic and has scored 0 goals in ten games total, only 2 of which were as a starter.
We'd better pray Gaffney doesnt get injured as Greene wasnt good enough last year and i doubt he is improving.

Another player with a badly advised move to Celtic and moved heart over head. He needed another year at Sligo. The move to Queen's Park hasn't worked for him either. Probably would have been better going back to Sligo over Shamrock Rovers to be honest.

That's for Queen's Park too, who are pushing for promotion to the SPL so you'd expect them to be a side in amongst the goals, even if he's only getting ten minutes here and there. Tis a disappointing return alright - doubly so if effectively Queen's Park are cutting ties with him.

I think he's a cracking signing if you can get his confidence back up. With the option of a making it permanent it's a no brainer.

Exact opposite for me. Potentially cracking signing, young, quick, goal scorer who has to be seen in the context of a replacement for Emakhu.
Bradley has form for turning around players with a lack of confidence or a stalled career eg Jack and Burkey or in Danny Mandriou's case an alleged attitude problem.
Rovers rarely make bad signings (hello Barry Cotter), which is down to McPhail and Bradley, and I have full faith in them re Kenny.

I hope you're right WAR. Kenny never did much against us even if he did score a few in the league elsewhere. In Bradley and McPhail I trust but I hope we have something else planned as we need an upgrade up front for Europe.

Agreed but as I said he would be a like-for-like replacement for Emakhu not an upgrade as such. On loan with an option to buy as per reports makes it very low risk.
Keena would be the upgrade but can't see Sligo selling to us. Mind you they won't be getting any add-ons for Kenny now so might be tempted to cash in.

Totally agree, he was Bohs best defender until he was injured. He carried the whole defensive line in a lot of games. I hope he has the same hunger this year. Also hope the commentators on LOI tv can master his name. He was Gran Thorton, Grant Tornton and a few others.
