Just noticed the deal is described on the website as a "professional contract", though presumably that just means part-time, rather than amateur, so you'd imagine other players will ultimately be re-signed on similar terms:

https://kerryfc.com/ryan-kelliher-commits-long-term-future-to-kerry-football-club-by-signing-professional-deal/

Great business from Kerry getting their top scorer tied down for another 2 years at the club. I would agree that more signings like this would be great to see over the rest of the season. Its a sign of intent from the club to secure their top performer's and build their 2024 squad with the core of this years. Exciting times ahead in the Kingdom.

Ronan Teahan signs on the same conditions as Kelliher, so good to see the aim is to develop the squad over the long-term, but presumably simultaneously trimming down the overall numbers.

Interesting article on The Athletic currently. The main focus is around an England-Italy u16 game a few weeks back and the scouts and agents that descended on it. But there's a little bit about Adam Murphy and Sam Curtis as apparently the English scouts were talking about how they can't sign them yet, and giving out about Brexit. They reckoned Curtis could be off to "one of the big Dutch clubs". I think he was linked with Feyenoord wasn't he?

Yeah Feyenoord were rumoured to be interested in Curtis this time last year. Murphy has been 18 since April so brexit rules aren’t stopping any UK clubs from signing him. On the topic of Murphy, the move to Bristol this transfer window appears to be off and he'll stay at pats until the end of the season. Daly said in an interview after the match last Friday saying the club hope to tie him down to a new contract too but I’d be surprised if they managed to pull that one off tbh, it would be amazing if they did though

Great news if Adam Murphy stays to see out the season. As you say, I’d be surprised if he signs another contract, given the interest from England. Absolutely no sympathy for English clubs when it comes to Brexit rules.

Shels have signed Portuguese right back Euclides Cabral until the end of the season. He was most recently with Apollon Limassol and has played in Swiss top flight with Grasshoppers and St. Gallen

Meh! Dundalk had a former La Liga and MLS MVP player not so long ago, sounds great on paper, but well least said and all that. This one could be the signing of the decade....

The new lad at Shels has already done more than Zahibo did in his entire time at Dundalk lol

I'd forgotten about him. He's on the market again it appears. He didn't tear it up in the French fourth division last season by the looks of things.

Waterford FC signed 30 year old, Spanish defender Derik Osede (Free agent - Most recently Pontevedra). Eddie Nolan retired a few weeks ago. We’ve been seriously lacking an older head at the back.

Was at Bermo's testimonial earlier and I'm quite sure that Killian Brennan would still start in most midfields in the league. Namely ours.

Luke Casey was only at Cobh for about a month!

The Cobh team is going so well at present and are looking to secure 3rd place. This is a great achievement considering Galway & Waterford are full-time and way ahead of the rest!
I suppose these players realised they would have found it hard to gain a place in the team and decided to go back to Rockmount now the non-league season has just start to kick-off!

Willie O’Connor taking over as UCD manager for next season….

Willie O'Connor taking over is not good news at UCD. A complete long ball merchant, which of course serves you well in the 1st Division. UCD have a simple model. Make sure either the Leinster Schools or Irish Schools manager is on the ticket at The Bowl, and they can work on targeted players in the Schools set up.

Dave Rogers gone from Harps,a total disaster of an appointment in the end…
I said it ages ago, he's a clown.

"Family and personal reasons" were the reason for his departure but I'd take it with a pinch of salt, he spouted a similar line about his family being abused online one weekend as an excuse for deleting his account in the aftermath of a defeat.

I really, really hope not. The board wouldn't have had a great bargaining position, he was a manager bad enough to kill a club if he ran for a few seasons, but a payoff would be very unfortunate. No word on whether his full time assistant is staying or going yet.

who was DRs FT asst Clariseach? I wont be surprised myself if Stephen Henderson walks the plank after last nights shambolic performance. Alls not well in the camp plus he got crap support from club between Kerry FCS press release and lack of a statement from my club. In the end SH had to issue a personal statement as there was no sign of an official release from the town board. Dont blame him tbh

i dont think he is the tyoe to walk away empty handed, I doubt his postmans job is still there and its hard to see much of a future in football management whatever about some coaching. Maybe the club had some way out of that long term contract which would then make some sense in a very odd setup.

This fella's nice guy shtick seemed to pull the wool over a lot of people's eyes, masking what a complete and utter spoofer he is. I'd like to think from Harps' point of view they managed to get out of it all without much/any payoff to him, although they probably deserve some sort of punishment for hiring him on a 4 year contract in the first place.

I'd also hope from a Harps standpoint that there's plenty of get out clauses in the multi-year contracts he was handing out to some truly brutal footballers.

Dave Rogers was liking a lot of random Bohs fans posts on twitter last year, including my brother's, when we had a vacancy. As a character, it's all very funny until he's managing your side.

Its a real bugbear of mine the standard of managers in this country, prem more than first, teams just give the job to the next warm body standing around when their is a vacancy instead of actually looking for someone capable.

Cork
Pats
Sligo
Drogheda
UCD?

Just handed over to whomever is standing there, Doherty is the only one I'd consider a success & his job was to build on a good job done by Clancy before, also he was the only one with previous experience at another club

Also

Derry & Rovers gave their jobs to total novices at the time which given their resources seemed a bit risky, I will concede that at least Higgins was targetted & Rovers were trying someone young after the previous appointment

Rovers we’re relatively ‘skint’ when they appointed Bradley - which makes his achievements all the more impressive

In fairness, the UCD model in the past while has been an assistant coming in and learning the ropes with a view to taking over. Paul Doolin was a coach under Martin Moran (I think Theo was still assistant at the time technically), Pete Mahon's assistant was Martin Russell, Martin Russell's assistant was Aaron Callaghan, Aaron Callaghan's assistant was Collie O'Neill, and now Andy Myler's assistant is Willie O'Connor. So looking for a capable assistant is looking for a capable future manager. Has worked reasonably well for us down the years I think.

Bunny Kelly
28/09/2023, 10:46 AM
I wasn't sure with Myler hence the question mark there

And regards Higgins & Bradley in isolation I see the point of their appointment in their clubs situation, but it adds the overall no of inexperienced managers in the league.

Declan Devine who I wouldn't have been a particular fan of from his work in Derry feels like an above average manager now because he knows what he is doing as opposed to learning on the fly.

28/09/2023, 11:11 AM
Myler and Mahon are the only two we've appointed externally, although both had links to UCD of course (Mahon's son was playing for us at the time, and Myler started with UCD and is working there now)

Agree though that there's a lot of managerial inexperience and you seem to get one or two roles and then leave the league entirely. (Liam Buckley being an obvious exception). Feels like a particular problem in Europe.

The Bowler

Myler wasn't a complete outsider though. He was employed in UCD and had some previous involvement with the College team. He was on the interview panel that was 'unable to fill the position' (despite one of the candidates being Ian Ryan - before he moved on), and as could only happen at UCD AFC, he was appointed manager by an interview panel on which he was a member. If it was anything other than football, the lads in The Ditch would have field day with the goings on at The Bowl.

Over here in US football teams of all levels seem to take their social media really seriously. It's really common to see even rec league standard clubs producing graphics like this pre and post match weekly.

LOI clubs and the FAI have recently really stepped up their game in the past few years but it seems like a much bigger part of the culture here.

But yeah I'd assume they are just like any local academy. I don't know his circumstances whatsoever but if he hasn't been able to get a scholarship to a university team it's hard to see him being ready to make a huge impact on the LOI right away.

But I do think there's huge potential in the US for LOI standard players (Vince Borden being a recent example), standard of coaching over here is really good if you can get it and the Americans generally have a really good attitude to training and trying to improve.
