will you please give up the digs about his weight, you have done it a few times now and its not funny. The lad is a quality player no matter if he looks like the typical footballer or not
He definitely looks overweight, I just wonder if he did lose a bit of weight would we see the same huge improvement when Dunne lost some weight? I personally think we have'ne seen the best of Andy Reid yet.

"Andy [Reid] just about made 95 minutes today - don't think he was flying at the end! Andy has worked extremely hard on his fitness. I don't think he was at his best today but he gives us something, that's why he is here"
From Roy Keane.

People have an odd definition of "fat". Would his physique be really all that out of place during the 60s or 70s, heck even the 80s? Surely Reid shows that it's not all about performance diets and sports psychology; pure natural talent still counts for a lot. Fair play to him, I'm happy to see him lighting a fire under Sunderland's arse.

Good goal by Reid, if he hit it straight it was going in but he puts a nice bend on it to make it special.
I don´t think Andy could be heavier that he was when he lined out for Ireland v Czech, then his belly was like a tractor tyre hanging over his shorts.

Oh come on, it's ok to make Hair jokes about Ireland but not ok to make fat jokes for Reid?
Could you imagine if SI had AR's weight problem as well as no hair..poor fella would be suicidal :D:D

I think his main aim was to hit the back of the net. I don't think he decided to put a bend on it to make it look special. Good goal though and delighted for him!

The bend comes with good technique. The idea is to keep it down the swerve is a by product of good technique.

It seems once he's injured he piles on the weight so it's important that he stays fit for our next campaign.
He was motm yet again on Saturday. That's 3 in a row! Beating off 63 other performances. ;)

They're gushing about him in the Guardian, gave him man of the match:
http://football.guardian.co.uk/Match_Report/0,,2269457,00.html
Like his manager he can see the bigger picture and routinely spots openings before anyone else. Able to deliver laser- like long-range passes with minimal backlift, he compensates lack of pace by the sort of adhesive touch that enables him to control and release the ball more quickly than most team-mates
if he stays injury free next season I think we'll see him proving his doubters wrong...

I actually think one of his strongest attributes is his confidence. He could play in any team and he wouldn't be afraid to demand the ball.

The best thing about him, from our point of view, is that pace is such a minimal aspect of his game. His technique and skill will not fade with time and so I could see him doing a job for us well into his mid 30s.

I think there is a bit of a scared look on Reids face as O Shea is about to make a move on him. He will probably miss though.

The premier league fantasy football is my judge. They have ex-pro's deciding the top 3 players and it's usually accurate. In fairness though Reid is the type of player that fellow pro's love purely because he reads the game so well.

"Andy's different to the others I've got here," reflected Keane who took his squad to Spain last week. "I played alongside him for Ireland and, although I had to carry him in a few games, I knew Andy was good. He can handle the ball.

With the chips that RMK was carrying around on his shoulders for the last few years of his playing career he ought to have had no problem carrying AR. :D

He's a laid-back type of lad who enjoys a few drinks and a sing-song and I thought that, mentally, he'd also be fine in front of our big crowds. A lot of players can't perform in front of 40,000 to 50,000 people but Andy can."
This is the full quote.

Reid has been excellent since arriving from Charlton. I can see him becoming a key player for club and country. By the way he's not fat, just big boned. And everyone knows, if your short and blocky strips make you look fat!:D

Andy is a great reader of the game and is also quite clued in tactically.
Apparently, he prepares well for a game beforehand. For breakfast he prefers the 4-4-2 option:
4 Pudding
4 Rasher
2 Sausage

Sunderland League titles 6. Last league championship in 1936. Last major trophy 1973.
Newcastle Utd League titles 4. Last league championship in 1927. Last major trophy 1968.

Another blow up over late comers to Sunderland training and who would have guessed it, but Andy Reid arrives late for training on Monday and is going out on loan to Wolves.
Apparantly Andy is bunking in with Liam Miller and gets a lift in with Miller.
Keane blew his top and said something about just because he scored on Saturday means féck all on a Monday.
Reid said something like, you wouldn't know much about that (scoring goals) Roy, you couldn't even bend a cucumber.

Exactly, the fat jokes are just a little tiresome at this stage. He is the one Irish player that i am excited about at the moment. A very exciting player with an exceptional passing range. When on form he can make Ireland and Sunderland tick. His performance at home to Germany was one of the very few bright spots from the last campaign. Unlike a certain Mr. Ireland he doesnt disapear during games and he actually wants to play in the green jersey

okay sorry, i had to, but this guardian article is flattering to reid (well, his skill anyway) and comes with such chuckles as:
"Whenever I saw him I thought of Bob Paisley's observation about Ray Kennedy: 'He's not quick, but he's nippy.' Paisley had a habit of making pronouncements so gnomic they came with their own fishing rod and cap, yet you always knew what he meant, just about."

this is the one and only player i have ever hyped to friends about ( ok well apart from duff ) and now finally he is proving it. I remember the first time watching him live and the vision he has was unreal - the only other to match him was keane and thats why they are so good together. you cant get this feel for a player by watching him on tele, you need to see the whole pitch and position of players to realise this. Reid is class - he could be world class with the right midfield partner.
eirebhoy
04/04/2008, 1:42 PM
He was without doubt world class against Germany. When Cyprus put pressure on him in the next game though he wasn't half as good. It'll be interesting to see how well he does now that everyone in the premiership knows about him.

Wonder why he started out solely as a left winger?
He's not particularly good at dribbling, average speed and fairly poor stamina. He's real talent is passing, he can tackle too and his positioning is excellent. Everything a centre mid needs, wonder why he and his managers are only realising this now.
The fact that there is a lack of players who can pass/shoot with their left foot probably contributed to this. Most small left footed players end up as a LB pr as a left winger. It started at Forest where they had CMF covered and needed a left winger. He played well there for a few seasons and then Spurs brought him in to fill that roll. As he's become more mature and confident on the ball it has become apparent he has what it takes to play CMF.
I'm not sure but I think he started off as a striker and even played a few games for Ireland at U21 in that position or did I just dream this? If so this would also have retarded his development into a CMF player.

you are wrong about him having poor stamina. Thats a very lazy view that alot of people have of him because of the way he looks. Look at the goal last week he scored, it was in the 95th minute and he was still getting forward into the box. Everytime I see him he works hard and Ive never seen him go down with cramp. Few years ago when he was at Spurs Martin Jol said that Reid was consistantly in the top few players at the club when they did fitness tests

Have to disagree with you there... I seen play a few games for Charlton and ireland and his tackles in the last 20 minutes of games are very scholes like... Less relevant when he's playing more advanced I know, but for me he does lack the engine of a 'complete' central midfeilder..
