Ah, that's interesting - hadn't seen that.

Has the look of a club whose money has run out.

I'd normally agree but once in a blue moon LOI sides do get a handy draw that they should be expected to win like when Derry played Aberystwyth in 2014 and beat them 9-0 on agg.

If Riteriai sitting bottom of the Lithuanian league with 1 win in 16 games were to knock Derry out it would be a horrendous result

We can't take anything for granted anymore. Any team from any so callewd "weak" country, even San Marino, could trouble LOI teams these days. Didn't some team from Belarus beat Derry 6 or 8-1 a few years back?

Soligorsk beat Derry 6-1 on aggregate

Agree I don't see this being an Aberystwyth style result, but if Riteriai have run out of cash and that explains why they suddenly have 1 win from 16 in the league, then it does change things in Derry's favour. Still would never "expect" an LoI win in Europe though!

Yeah I don’t see it being an Aberystwyth style walkover myself either but Derry should defo be winning this. It’s not that I see the Lithuanian league as weak (far from it) it’s the fact that Riteriai are in horrendous form and rock bottom of it. If Derry were up against someone like Zalgiris then I wouldn’t be optimistic at all of them going through

Riteriai last match before taking on Derry City was a 2-2 home draw v Zalgiris

Best of luck to Derry tonight - the league does need a win in Europe! ... and soon!

Yeah doesn't look to be loading for me either.

EDIT: it works, it just takes a long time to load each page.

Very comfortable up to this point, they're a fairly poor team.

Actually, I mocked away goals before - but a 1-1 draw means extra time and penalties here I presume?

Unfortunately yes, sweat pouring off them already, humidity probably going to be an issue late on now.

A bit of composure in the last 3rd and they should get chances to win it. These don't look much worse than the clunge team who beat dundalk but Derry are making a better fist of it anyway.

CorribsideSteve

Not quite the LSL Div 2 effort that Dundalk put in, but still disappointing. Derry despite having most of the ball in extra time, just coldn't find a moment of quality after going 3-2 behind, which is a shame as they finished the regular 90 on top. Would have fancied them to turn it around in the second leg, in a normal world. Beaten by a team most Lithuanians have never heard of.

So that's two seeded clubs knocked out already? lovely.

Dundalk was seeded but Derry wasn't seeded I don't think, rovers are and bohs are not.

2-2 away would be a good result in a 2 legged affair. However, looking at that match as a whole they blew it.

Hope Conor is okay.

Bad defending for the 3 goals.

pineapple stu
25/08/2020, 6:54 PM
For the coefficient nerds btw, it looks like the (unplayed) second leg is deemed to have been a draw. I think games scratched due to covid are given as a draw and a loss, but not entirely sure on that.

Bad defending for the 3 goals.

So same as the Dundalk performance then?

Sounds like Derry played the better football but screwed themselves with defensive errors.

If I had a euro for every time a LOI team gifted away a goal in Europe...

Blew it to say the least. Couldn’t ask for a handier European tie than that crowd. For 10 mins after first goal we all thought could be a fair few.

Devine to blame for first two. The team easing off and making basic basic mistakes as is becoming all too common. That is a managerial issue. Cherrie pathetic for the extra time winner. Type of misjudgement he has always made.

Pathetic to be beat by that crowd who were a very poor team. Half mil down the drain, simple as that.

In the last 6 matches, LOI sides have conceded 3 goals in 5 of those matches. Not very good..., all be of it, only 1 home match in that time.

Nothing to feel sorry about. It was a pathetic performance and an embarrassment of an outcome against a gift of an opposition. It is a disgrace.

Decades of giving away cheap goals has been a real scourge in Europe. It used to be put down to fitness, PT players but in this current 'pro' era and the early-mid 2000's its a reoccuring theme. Play well then implode and miss sitters on top. Ye can only call bad luck so often. Do clubs have sports psychologists working with them at all?

Tonight was nothing to do with habitual cheap goals in terms of LOI in Europe. It reflected a well know issue at Derry. Two of the most simple goals ever same ball same run before That ****ing backward **** Cherrie done that which was beyond belief.

Crowd of farmers we played tonight, so embarrassing. You could’ve chose a squad of Lithuanian boys in Derry who play ; a side to chin us. Save us the journey.

Beginning to feel like Kerr was right, even though i've watched most games, Bosses stat doesn't really make things any better :/

THe silly goals are definitely not happening cos of tired legs and tired minds like before, which was frustrating but the lack of proper fitness setup and coaches it was somewhat understandable, they are just simple junior football type mistakes, maybe not even that, more likely on the court in 6th class. It's hard to understand. Perhaps GK/CB or Back 4 hasnt moved on whilst the rest has.

Maybe the LOI is not as good as we think? I know Bohs have a tough game and I don't expect them to win that game but its up to Rovers now - they should win on Thursday but then, they unseeded in the next draw and god only knows who they get! ... Ireland are 36th at present in the co-efficient (I don't know how tbh) but that will crash after this year probably down to low 40's I think.

I was wondering the same thing.
It happens so often that it must be down to an element in the psyche of domestic Irish players, rather than a fitness issue. Maybe our domestic players unconsciously believe their inferior than their European counterparts, even ones from backwater countries like Lithuania...

We know the LOI isn't great, but when you see Dundalk and Derry dominate their games, then shoot themselves in the foot with defensive errors, which is a recurring theme for LOI teams EVERY year, it makes you think there must be a deeper issue.

In fairness, neither Derry or Dundalk have been particularly impressive of late. The hope in Europe this year always lay with Shamrock Rovers or Bohs.

I think LOI players get moments of panic where they suddenly think
" Holy €hit we're playing in Europe!! " and let the occasion get the better of them. There's almost a collective level of amnesia and thus sill goals are conceded. That Lithuania pub team celebrated like they'd won the league last night-- what's does that tell ye?.
I also really think it's down to the level of finishers/strikers in our league. I expect Bohs and Rovers to do quite well actually, for some unknown reason...
