Linfield got a decent crack at Legia tonight on a similar basis, no ?

I know Drita the Kosovans had players actually test positive but taking the above post as accurate then it could essentially be viewed as the same ?

I think this shows that in this seasons format an away draw is a positive as the onus is on the home team to host the game in suitable location. If the above UEFA information is accurate then it looks like the Lithuanians may end up forfeiting the game.

I think at some point each team or association is going to fall foul of that rule. Wouldn't it make more sense for all fixtures to be played in neutral venues, and then each association look for special exemptions from their government/authorities on return.

Absolutely - and there are exemptions in many countries. An IFA team of refs are in Andorra tomorrow and based on green / red lists would have to quarantine. However IFA got them on elite athlete list - given only 4 FIFA referees in country (same as FAI) so quarantine doesnt apply.

With a 2nd Kosovan team unable to play last night (8 positive tests on arrival in Gibraltar) this is going to the summer of asterixs and who gets to group stages - where rules likely to change to suit big boys - could be luck of the draws and nothing to do with sporting ability.

Finland just added Ireland to its blacklist so next week's match is up in the air. I assume they will try to get permission to travel as otherwise I think they forfeit.
Could be wrong but it's not rovers fault at this late stage, uefa could insist on a switch to a neutral venue I suppose but I doubt it.

"Furthermore, if a country places new travel restrictions after next Monday's draw, making the match impossible, then the tie will be forfeited by the respective country."

It really depends upon what is considered "making the tie impossible". You would think that the logistics of arranging a suitable neutral venue and organising travel etc on a week's notice would be an unreasonable ask, in which case Rovers should be awarded the tie if Tampere can't travel. Then again, all of the rest of the UEFA guidance heavily emphasises the responsibility of the home team to sort neutral venues so who knows what way it will pan out.

With all of this going on and potential byes happening left, right and centre what's the story with the prize money? Are both teams in a tie still getting the usual amount for win/loss/ (*dependant of course) or have UEFA changed it due to the circumstances?

Good question,
The money in round 1 is for getting there so to speak you get it even if you lose (both teams do).
The money in round two is for getting there as well so id say yes you get the money either way.

Thats assuming UEFA dont order a neutral venue but i think its a bit late for that.

I think i asked that earlier, where are UEFA getting all this money? It would be much fairer if the money was divided between both teams in the event of a forfeit.

BUt like refjohn suggests above, if this starts happening left right and centre i can see UEFA doing something to ensure the big teams still end up in the group stages - especially in the champions league.

Presumably UEFA's revenues are relatively iunscathed so far :

- Most of their sponsors are big multinational companies with very deep pockets.
- Even if they weren't, they'll be on long-term contracts so couldn't just pull the plug on UEFA unless they were going bankrupt.
- The TV revenues will remain, and may even have strengthened on the basis that people are staying at home more and fans can't attend games in-person.

The one hit they'll have taken will have been over the 2020 Euros. But UEFA itself doubtless will have good cash reserves and very amenable bankers. So all-in-all I suspect they're well placed to weather a one year storm.

Good team selection by Perth. Don't think there can be any complaints about that anyway.

Very attacking bench too. No Boyle, Massey or Sloggett in the squad.

That looked like it could come at anytime. Dundalk just brutal at the back as they have been since the restart. Shame because midfield and wings they are on top.

But there really is no excuse in this day and age for that and Rogers should do better. Was a big call bringing gartland back in after a long injury and the fact these two up front for them are fast.

Not sure whether their league was suspended or not , if so they'll tire a bit but they look fairly content with Dundalk.

It’s not ‘sadly standard practise’ (sic). RTE only have rights for island of Ireland so contractually it has to be blocked outside IOI.

It’s almost an annual double act from Gartland and Rogers. In tight games like this, you can’t afford to make stupid mistakes like that.

I found the incessant references on the broadcast to Dundalk's "bad luck", especially in relation to the first goal, extremely bizarre. There's no luck involved in atrocious defending and handing the opposition goals on a plate. Similarly, Hoban's header aside, I really don't see how you can put the **** finishing down to luck either. Dundalk were obviously well in the game, but also deserved to lose it imo.

Do they always have the IoI rights? Was it shown in the North today? Watched it in Donegal myself this evening. The sheer randomness of the way things are geoblocked is bizarre.
What's blocked on the Player may not be blocked on Sky and vice versa. (e.g. Big Week on the Farm is on now. It's blocked on the Player, available on Sky. Where's the rights issue there?). Not an problem in most of Derry City since you can just switch to a southern mobile network or get it through your TV aerial, but consistency would be nice all the same.

Match-wise, thought Celje were there for the taking. Dundalk struggling for goals is not what we're used to. The Americans will not be happy, hence Perth must be looking over his shoulder now.

Looking like the end of an era for Dundalk.I reckon will have to build again and wouldn’t be sure if Perth is their man. When you look at tonight’s performance against some of their European games under Kenny it was night & day.

The Lilywhites
19/08/2020, 9:09 PM
Very hard to take that defeat. You can talk about us being the better team and gifting them 3 goals, but I don't accept that nonsense. If you don't take your chances and you defend like that, you deserve what you get. Gartland has cost us so much in Europe.

Our performance may have looked better than what we've been doing in the league but you have to take into account the opposition too. Celje were dreadful. I'd be shocked if Molde don't hammer them next week.

We've just lost 3-0 to easily the worst team we've played in Europe over the past 10 years, maybe except for the Luxembourg side in 2014. It's an embarrassing result, and at the end of the day all that matters is the result, not what happened during the game. Even then what did we create? Duffy had a great chance and Hoban's header, that's about it.

The bottom line is we've been hammered. And now we'll no doubt have to listen to Perth trot out his "I must have run over a black cat" line along with the usual excuses. Enough of the BS.

There are no excuses. We're spending over 60k a week running the club, paying out huge wages on this squad, for this rubbish in return.

Something is seriously wrong in the club. Certainly the end of an era, which we probably knew anyway, but that's a shocking way to bow out of what will be our last CL campaign for a while.

The owners will be angry tonight and I expect Perth to be sacked tomorrow. If their aim is progress in Europe, he has demonstrated in European games alone that he isn't up to it. 7 games, 0 wins, with 3 heavy beatings from the 4 ties.

He has to go and let someone else have a go at the EL tie.

Not saying this cos vinnie is from Tallaght but I can't believe u would sack him. He won a treble last year and almost everything if Kelly's shot had sneaked in in the cup final. Bradser has built a team with on the basis of the last accounts 50% of dundalks budget but if the board had listened to fans he would have been sacked 18 months ago.
Careful what u wish for.

What treble? Don't mention Unite the Union Cup! His management also cost us a possible FAI Cup with the Shields suspension mess. Would not have happened under Kenny.

Ah come on. If you want to go down that road, if Waterford didn't get a man sent off, we would have lost 2-0. We didn't deserve anything from that game.

Performances since the restart have been dreadful.

Europe was always the main aim with the owners. Perth has delivered 0 wins from 7 games in 2 seasons. We're third in the league, almost at the halfway stage, and if performances/results continue as is, we'll miss out on European qualification altogether.

How long do you wait to pull the plug on him? Away to Sligo and away to Derry next, and away to Cobh in the Cup in between. I wouldn't trust him to get any wins from those.

You have to look at where we are as a club at the minute. It's not like maybe in 2010 or 2014 where a win in Europe was a bonus and third in the league would be acceptable. If that was the case and we were operating on a budget like we were then, then fine, keep Perth. The club budget is over €60,000 a week ffs and he's serving up this rubbish.

Anyway, he's gone after tonight.
