Watched "Manchester by the Sea" at the weekend there. Very good. Well acted by Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams and the young lad. A bit of a downer but in a good way.
No tits, no rating.

That film was complete Oscar Bait. I love how Casey is accused of sexual harassment by so many women on set but since he is left wing he skates by. I mean even if we were all filthy rich, would you ever settle a claim against you that wasn't true? I would fight to the death. Why would you want to pay someone who is lying about you money? Because they aren't lying I suppose. On a lighter note his brother was removed as director of the next Batman. But he will still star.
Does being oscar bait automatically make a movie bad?

No but do you ever notice how every year at this time there is a white person weeper type story that is total fiction? I didn't until Chris Rock brought it up a few weeks ago. It's like a genetically engineered thing from Harvey Weinstein to win an oscar. I mean look, how old is he supposed to be in the film. In his 30s? Grow up and take care of the nephew. Problem solved.
I liked it. I thought the internal struggle he was going through was portrayed well.
Although I see what you're saying, I (personally) don't think much of the politics or motives behind movies and their releases. I just watch them and judge them on their own merits which is usually just based on how they make me feel.

Trainspotting 1 & 2. Really enjoyed them. Don't think I had ever sat down and watched the first one right through before and it was great to have it fresh going into the second one. First one holds up really well and the second really captures the modernisation and changes around Edinburgh over the last 20odd years. If anything second one is maybe a bit lighter, doesn't quite have the huge impact moments of the first, but it tugs at the nostalgia heart strings and is a really enjoyable couple of hours cinema.

saw that when it came out, thought it was really good, and Bridges is excellent, but didn't understand why people were telling me it was the best film of the year. It's good, really good, but I didn't have it in my top five

You know something I never understood when i was a kid or when it's on now...that scene in Ferris Buellers Day Off when they go to the restaurant. He picks a name off the reservations list. And the Maitre D' suspects he is not indeed Abe Froman. The Sausage King of Chicago. But then they play the stupid game with the phone somehow convincing said Maitre D' that he IS in fact Abe Froman. But this is like a 1980's power lunch expense account type place, which would be presumably what Mr.Froman would have used it for. And the salty Maitre D' knew who the guy was by name. So its VERY likely that he would have know Abe Froman by face too, been on a first name basis with him possibly and even met him many times. But even if not, how would Ferris have known that the guy was not going to show up for his reservation? If the guy shows up with his party, it ruins the whole caper. And what would the odds be that he picks the one name on the list who doesn't show up? And how did they pay for the meal on top of the tickets to the Cubs game, the museum entrance fee, etc? It really is kind of a stupid plot line in that film. I also think the principal probably would have gone to Mia Sara's house to figure out the whole dead Grandmother thing for sure, and not Ferris's house. But I digress.

I re-watched Trainspotting last night before going in to see the new one this evening. I'm really looking forward to the new one, and it's been a fair while since I watched the first. The gut-wrenching moments are still as strong as they were on first watch. What a truly incredible film.

Saw Trainspotting 2 tonight and I made the mistake of reading the comments on here first so my expectations kind of soared. It was enjoyable but I think it leant too heavily on the nostalgia of the first one, probably because the plot wasn't strong enough for it to stand on its own two feet anyway. Without saying too much, some of the stuff towards the end was a bit lame I felt. The characters, acting and humour carried it through more than anything else really.
Just watched Irish movie "Young Offenders" about a couple of langers looking to make a few euros and not get caught by the cops, their enemy and a gimpy drug dealer.
Gave me and the wife a good laugh.

Just watched it today, too, with Mrs Grise (Netflix, Stu?). Really enjoyed it - it's got some great one-liners, delivered in a pitch-perfect Caawrk droll. An under-the-radar gem.

funnily enough, we watched it on Kodi and got a fairly good stream. Would have liked subtitles for the Missus although she understood it all. Then last night we were picking a movie to watch off Netflix and saw that "Young Offenders" was on there. Yeah it was really good alright - lots of laugh out loud moments that you'd think only Irish might get but the crazy Canadian Croat beside me was laughing too.
Ended up watching "Patriots Day" last night. You know, I have to say, I wasn't sure where they were going to go with it but I thought it was a really well done sequence of events before, during and after the bombing that captured some individual stories really well and respectfully. I also had no idea that the shoot out in Watertown went down like that!!! Crazy stuff!! Also, I am a huge Mark Wahlberg fan - I like almost every movie he is connected with.

I never thought I'd say this but I completely agree with Kris.
I watched it and I can't believe Casey Affleck won an Oscar.

Don't get me wrong, it was a decent movie all the same.

It's true enough alright. I looked it up immediately afterwards and there were many sources saying that 5 crude grenades were thrown at the police along with a pressure cooker bomb a replica of what they used for the marathon bombs. In addition up to 500 bullets were fired some of which entered the surrounding houses.

Sing Street:Awkward kid at school forms a band to win the heart of a girl he fancies, set around a Christian Brothers School in the 80's is a little formulaic but hugely enjoyable because of the cast and most of all some stonking sounds in the score 8/10
Young Offenders:Mentioned above but is about 2 young 15 year old Cork scobies who set off on push bikes to try and get their hands on a cache of cocaine which has been jettisoned into the sea off the Cork coast.Loved it 8/10

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo:Only got around to watching this now.David Fincher film with loads atmosphere.Daniel Craig is a financially broke Journalist who is tasked by Christopher Plummer with delving into some dark family secrets about a missing girl who disappeared about 40 years previously.Rooney Mara steals the show a bit but the rest of the cast are perfect fits.
Mostly shot in Sweden and is a fine thriller (about 2 hours 40 mins long) 9/10
A Monster Calls:Liam Neeson plays the part of the Monster (his voice) who comes to the aid of a young boy whose mother is in bad health and going through hell at school with bullying etc,I found the film totally depressing and not very entertaining 4/10

Did you ever see the original Swedish version with Noomi Rapace? (And subtitles)? I always thought Mara was a terrible actress, only there for the family connections. They said the other day she is out for the new ones they are making.

Agree Mara is average at best her sister Kate is a better actress but thats not saying alot. Also agree the the original Swedish version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is vastly superior, don't like Craig in the American version , American version also feels incomplete when compared to Swedish trilogy

Shia Lebeouf's new thriller "Man Down" opened in the U.K. last weekend, selling one ticket and grossing $7. (Sorry I can't do the right sign on this thing. It was $8.40 US to be fair.)
Box Office analysts say it might be the new world record for a film opening. (MIGHT BE?)
"Poor Shia," Said Bloomberg News. "It might be the World Record for least amount of money ever grossed."
I wonder which poor sap and or die hard fan decided to be the only one to go alone to the movies and see the film? Could have been one or two U.K. based people on here now that i think of it. I would go to the movies alone but i don't think i ever have. That would weird me out, make me feel a bit lonely looking around and not seeing anyone else, though I suppose that would be the day to sneak in a tuna sandwich or some curry thing wrapped in foil. You could put your feet up, make comments at the screen like it's mystery science theater. But I mean let's say you were lonely going alone in the first place. That might about do a person in no? They should seriously try to hunt that person down and give him/her 15 minutes of internet lore type fame. Honestly, if you looked around and you were the only person there, would you leave? Or not care?
Watched "Get Out" over the weekend. A creepy and intense psychological thriller. Like "Meet the Parents" but racial. :D Very well done and good acting all round especially from the couple. Definitely worth watching.
If anyone has seen it though, just wondering what the point of the opening scene was? Who was the guy that was walking along the footpath?
Oh, sorry, in case folks didn't know, imdb has shut down its message board service (I went on to see if I could find the answer to my question above). They shut it down in February. It was absolutely awful with the amount of trolling on there and my number of visits had dwindled to close to a couple times a year but, at the same time, I used to find the message board feature useful for discussion and finding out more info.

I liked Dunkirk but I feel like all of these war movies are starting to become the same thing. Saving Ryan's Privates, Thin Red Line (Hugely underrated if you like Malick)..Some battle scenes from Band Of Brothers, the Mel Gibson one about the conscious objector who won the Medal Of Honor, etc... Bits of bodies blowing up, yelling, screaming. Burn victims. French people retreating. Letters home to Sweethearts. Dead comrades. Dumb officers. Germans. Fifty Yard Stare.
Nolan is a great director. That must be said. Shoe-in for Best Picture. I can see many on here being too triggered to sit through it though frankly.

I liked it, it held my attention throughout. I liked how it portrayed the troops conditioning to being slaughtered from what they had seen & been through up to that point. Yes there was a will to live and survival instinct but it stopped at that, no sense of ones own life being precious, that I found very chilling. The reality of gunfire and bullets hitting nearby was also as nerve shredding as it ought to be, that's something movies tend to glamourise and Dunkirk did not. Very welcome also was no bullsh*t love story angle shoehorned into the tale. It was a bit bunting and jolly hockey sticks as the fleet arrived but but overall it held it's course well, very good movie I thought, directed and shot brilliantly.
