Shawshank Redemption- Really enjoyed it, especially the ending. It was one of thise 'I can't belive you haven't seen it' movies so glad to have broken that duck. I thought it would be a lot more sentimental and syrupy than it actually was. One gripe though- why, oh why, did they have to show them meeting on the beach at the end? The film ended perfectly when Morgan Freeman's charcter left 'in hope.'
Unforgiven- Quite possibly, the finest film I've seen. Absolutely brilliant, especially since I've seen Clint in Fistful of Dollars and Few Dollars More recently where I didn't think he could act that well. Loved it, and intend to watch it again soon. :)

Factotum. Excellent movie starring Matt Dillon and Marisa Tomei. True story based on A Polish/American writer (Charles Buklowski) from Jersey City. Very funny movie as Dillon is fired from every horrible job he works (Pickle factory etc) as he tries to get published. A raving alco who spends a lot of time at the racetrack trying out his new"system". Made by Norwegians with no sign of Hollywood anywhere in this movie. A great start to the movie with Dillon stuck in an ice room having to use a cango hammer for minimum wage. Truely a combo of all the rotten jobs some of us have had to do from time to time.

Unforgiven is my favourite film. I saw it a few years back and thought it was great on its own merit - powerful and moving, but having seen Leone's westerns, it's a truely brilliant deconstruction of that genre.

how could you leave out Bukowski's main claim to fame? Alcoholic extraordinaire.
Watched Tropic Thunder, it was okay, but not as many laughs as I expected, based on reviews.

I thought it was pretty excellent. Great performances from Malkovich, Pitt, Clooney and the bird from Fargo. Not to mention the "What have we learned?" at the end.
Saw Choke yesterday. 6/10. It was good but didn't capture the depravity of the book. Tough one to adapt I'll admit.

Do you read much Bukowski? If so you haven't pick up Post Office, Women and Ham On Rye, if you like them he's got quite a few short stories as well, his poetry is also good.
Movie was actually surprisingly good
Sky signal packed in yesterday so went to get a DVD ... wish we didnt now!
Got "The Happening"
OMG, Has to be the worse film ever. Couldnt even bring myself to watch it all
but it all seemed to be about killer hay fever!
The acting in it was shocking, worst I've seen for a while!
Oh yeah, the rating ... on a scale of 1 to 10 ... it was brutal

Got that out last weekend. Turned it off after 45 mins. Worst movie I have seen in years. I expected better from Whalberg.

just saw what i think will be my movie of the year on saturday, philip seymour hoffman in "synecdoche new york" - i think this is pronounced sin-ECK-doe-key. by the writer charlie kaufman of "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" and "being john malkovich" among other stuff, but his first time directing. fans of david lynch should give this a serious look, some mind-bending meta/movie-within-a-movie stuff goes on and it's quite funny despite the overall weight of sadness that envelopes it. i believe the term synecdoche is a 'metonym' or something - essentially when you refer to a part of something but really mean the whole thing. e.g. "my mother won't let me borrow her wheels" where wheels=car obviously. strange, strange and daring film, not everyone's cup of tea but the performances were magnificent, and i really mean that, no joke!

Great stuff
Watched Zack and miri make a Porno at the weekend. Pretty funny stuff. Not ground breaking but if you like Kevin smith rom-coms (NOT jersey girl) then its one of the better ones. More Chasing Amy than Clerks. Some real LOL moments too.

never saw it, but i've just read some about "adaptation" pete, and indeed synecdoche seems to cover some similar ground. dude loves his meta-narratives or narrative wormholes or.. whatever the *&^% they are. hope i didn't inflate the film too much, it's definitely not for everyone, and i think critically it's at 65% on the tomatometer. but since you like kaufman i can't rec' it any higher! i think the last film that hit me like this was "there will be blood" but that was only after three days; this beast is more immediate than that but still a head-scratcher to be sure.

All his stuff very strange, sometimes it works... Adaptation is one of most clever films seen, probably far too clever for its own good. Remember watching it the first time & didn't know what was happening for the first half...until it clicked... Definitely acquired taste.
Showing how bang up to date I am, I watched Adrift lastnight on Film4. Man what a crock that was.
Obviously I knew the premise of the film, and tried not to be cynical from the start, but the script was so much of a clunker that it was soon hard not to be cynical.
The actors, I guess, did the best with what they had, but there was just nothing there. Each new element that was added to their predicament was done in such a ham-fisted way; and was either signposted from early on, or done in such a forced manner that you were left thinking 'well why would they do that?'.
Actually at times I almost found myself shouting at the screen.
I must confess to flicking over to 'Have I got news for you' at one stage, but was back in time to see the gobsmacking ending.
Der Baader Meinhof Komplex
Saw this, I thought it was great. I think it's one that you either love or hate, I loved it. It's quite impartial too, which is good. Anyone else seen it?

Watched Red Violin last night. The story of a violin made by an Italian in 1681 (can't remember his name) through to modern day (it was one of Puccini's violins at one stage). Quite a strange movie but very, very good
Watched half of Beloved Immortal (story of Beethoven's will) tonight but stopped cause my housemate had to go to bed. (You might have guessed she works for Lyric FM at this stage) Very good so far and can't wait to watch the second half

Saw a good few movies recently:)
Rescue Dawn - about an American soldier who gets caught in Vietnam but manages to escape his captors and goes on the run. Not too bad, but since it was C Bale and directed by Herzog I was expecting a bit more.
Into The Wild - Now I had read the excellent book beforehand so knew the story but even with this I was still amazed. Great movie and kind of adds to the book (but must read the book first!). The young actor is great - never seen him before but he gave a masterful performance
The movie is basically about a young fella who goes into the wild!
The scene near the end with him and the old fella just as he is about to head to Alaska was very touching - a real tearjerker
There Will Be Blood - not too bad , bloody long though at over 2 and a half hours. As many have said - would this movie have been different if Brad Pitt or Cruise was in it - I think so - Lewis really makes this movie -
No Country For Old Men - alright - was a bit disappointed with the end but then it is a Coen movie and that was probably done intentionally. Good acting, but its the kind of movie that is hard to figure out (much like the book - I guess)
So thats 2007 done for - anygood movies out this year that i can look at?:)

I seen Body of Lies last Saturday, the gf liked it but i thought was just ok,maybe 6/7 out of 10,decent story but Crowe CANT do an American accent. He tried to do a New York accent in another film by the same director as this American Gangster.but failed then too.Di Caprio is half decent and most of the supporting actors are really good.I'd grudingly recommend it.

In Bruges had be laughing most of the way through it despite it's shockingly violent ending. Colin Farrell was excellent in it. And Almost Famous, while the script wasn't up to much, was made with enough love and care to make it a decent movie; Kate hudson and Frances McDormand really make it though.
Rented "Indiana Jones & the kingdom of the crystal skulls" and "Ironman" over the weekend. Both fairly average IMO 3 out of 5. Probably the worst Indiana Jones so far.
PS What with the resurecting of all the lte 70's and 80's acton heroes in the last year or two? (Rock, Rambo and Indiana)

Watched two movies back to back last night, first up was John Q, a good Denzel Washington movie about a man trying everything to get his son on a heart donar's list after he realises he has been screwed by his insurance company. One criticism would be a bit of a Hollywood ending, but sure we need that sometimes I guess.
Then we went on to The Colour Purple, haven't watched it in years so wanted to revisit it and it's still a very powerful movie. Great performances from Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey and especially Whoopi Goldberg. If you haven't watched I'd recommend it in an instant

has anyone seen a movie called "adam and paul".
storyline is about two dublin junkies stumbling through a drug hazed existence, going from one bad situ to another...very dark comedy, with ending probably somewhat true to life but extemely sad...one of the main actors sadly passed away this year from cancer in his mid thirties.an excellent actor.film is a few years old ,but if you haven't seen it, try to!!!

Speaking of old movies. Last night, I flicked onto Sky Movies and Jaws 2 was on. Its not aged well.
I forgot about the bit where the Shark eats the helicopter - including the pilot - who was sporting a groovy, Amish Community style beard.
Alas, the beard alone was no match for the psychotic, 25 foot Great White Shark.

I didn't like the film for some different reasons.
No opening titles.
Arab shouting 'Yella' during the opening shot. A blank screen. 'Yella' is just 'Let's go' (or 'come on' as translated in the film shortly afterwards) or 'allez'. When I here it as a cliché I start to be wary.
(I don't know an American production where I havn't heard it. When a small amout of Arabic is used.) 'Sneil' or 'Raus' is becoming the appropiate translation.
Topology was all wrong. For Northern Iraq they had that Erg/Hamada stony stuff that's found in the Sahara.
There's a reference to torture from Laurence of Arabia's 'Seven Pillars' at Dera'a, Syria. (Laurence got it up the bum from the Turkish soliders.)
Good production. I was expecting some inspiration. Than at the end Ridley Scott is the first closing credit. I blame myself.
There was a scene where the Stars and Stripes were surounded by three Star of David window frames, that's about as subtle as Ridley Scott gets.
My fear is that with 'Black Hawk Down', 'Jerusalem' the Crusader one where he positioned Jerusalem on a flat desert in Morocco (don't tell Scott about the Temple Mount or the Mount of Olives. What a Dick.) Anyway, my concern is that Ridley Scott may be considered an expert on the Middle East/ Holyland. Jesus.

Taken : actually pretty good for what it is.
Saw 5 : havent gotten to the end yet but its fairly poor but has remembered the main reason behind the traps and not just to have pointless gore.
Step brothers : 2nd time watching this love it its very funny.
Resident evil degeneration : looks like a movie length game intro sequence really but i like it but then again i really liked the movies !!!
