Just watched "Kidulthood" on BBC2 there, nothing great but a decent enough film about teen life in London

"Blitz"-Jason Statham plays a plain clothes London Policeman trying to track down a killer (brilliantly played by Aidan Gillen) who has an unhealthy habit of shooting cops in the face.

Not quite as many fight sequences as normal but I think in this instance less is more,if you like JS you'll like this-7/10.

We must be watching all the same films...

Anyway, I only really rented it because Paddy Considine was in it. Was very worried abut "THE STATH" being in it and his voice annoyed me, that said he play that unorthadox cop well and i could see him do a few movies with as the same character, ala Clint Eastwood.
6/10 for me.

In the past coulple of weeks I've seen:

Stripes: 7/10 - Not the funniest I've seen but generally amusing, perhaps dragged on a bit for a couple of funny moments. Would have been 6.5 but for the mud wrestling scene.
Dumb and Dumber: 8.5/10 - Hadn't seen this years (sometime in the mid-late 90's) when I was too young to get it and finally got around to seeing it again and it didn't disappoint
Whale Rider: 2/10 - What a terrible film, watched it in class and bored the hell out of me. It doesn't get a 1/10 because it did make me laugh a couple of times. This in spite of the fact that I find Maori culture interesting.

Midnight in Paris - Woody allen's "return to form" apparently. not bad but not great. Stars Owen wilson, Marianne cotillard and Rachel McAdams 7/10

Crazy, Stupid, Love - above average romcom with Ryan gosling, Steve Carell, emma Stone and Julianna Moore - 8/10

Inception - Yeah wasnt too bad, maybe a little too long, but not half as good or as clever as they might like to think.

Route Irish - Ken Loach's movie about security firms work in Iraq, very good as you would expect from a Loach movie, doesnt pull any punches, great acting, and a very good ending. Enjoyed it, even if it is always harrowing to watch a Loach film

The Kings Speech - Really enjoyed it, good story, good acting, and for a change good to see a simple movie with no CGI or whatever do well.

The Guard - Wasnt expecting much as the trailers looked awful but was good and the rapport between Glesson and Cheadle was good.

Adam and Paul - Finally got round to seeing this movie about two junkies wandering around the streets of Dublin. Loved it and easily the best movie I have seen this month.

Warrior - Great movie and a big surprise how much I enjoyed it. 9/10

Midnight in Paris - Nice film, not too long as well. Owen Wilson is one of my favourite, very likeable. 7/10

The Guard - Loved it, funny cause I bet you get Guards like that in the back of beyond in places like Galway! 8/10

I Spit on Your Grave (2010) - The original was extremely controversial and widely banned for it's graphic violence and depiction of gang rape. It pushed the boundaries of film at the time and reflected elements of the feminist movement and female empowerement. The new version is basically just standard "torture porn", it doesn't really have any of the impact of the original or the same sense of fighting against societal norms and repression. It's relatively watchable but no more than a 5/10 and a pointless remake.

"Wrecked"- I don't think Adrian Brody has been in too many decent films since his Oscar, but this thriller is pretty decent, he wakes up trapped in a car that's crashed in the woods and has to figure out how he got there, and how to escape...7/10.

Agreed about it being a lot of fun, and the kid. Would've scored it 5/10 due to it being a "virtual" Rocky I remake, especially the ending, even with its own Adrienne.

What's my number - Now, Anna Faris is one of the sexiest actresses on the go, and even though she sounds a bit rough in this movie, she's still hot. But the movie is awful. You know the ending 5 minutes in, it's completely unrealistic, there are 2 laughs in it and the whole idea is so dumb it's boring. I thought it was a testosterone based decision on my part to dislike it, but her indoors thought it was one of the worst movies she's seen. 2/10 (only for Anna Faris).

Kings Speech - Caught it on a flight to the UK a couple of weeks back and while I thought it was poor mans version of The Madness of King George, it did the job. Scathing about Edward and Wallis Simpson, it showed the old queen mother as a right waggon, Elizabeth as a crawler and Margaret as a nice kid ( kept expecting to see her with a fag in one hand and a vodka in the other). Surprised it got so many Oscars and I reckon if it wasn't so Hollywood it wouldn't have been as successful. Nice way to pass the tie but not one I could stomach again. 6/10.

Worm, I remember. So you're spot on with that, I'd forgotten it - but Real Steel is nowhere near as funny as it. Futurama is a series that grew on me and it's nice to dip in and out of.

Saw Margin Call last night, slow, cumbersome, average acting, really a tv movie with names in it. I tried to maintain an interest in it the whole way through but it didn't hit the spot like the Bear Sterns movie with James Wood (can't remember the name). 2/10

Sat and watched Puss in Boots last night, not one really for kiddies (some of the humour will fly over their heads) but a nice way to spend the time. Funny in parts and don't expect Shrek humour. Banderas rules, I can now say I'm a fan. 6/10

Travelling for the election I got time to watch a few of flicks:
5 days of war - a pretty rough reflection of the Ossetian conflict, more leaning to the Georgian/NATO side of events, definitely down on cossacks, and I'm not sure how factually correct it is. By coincidence I was travelling from Tbilisi with colleagues the day before war broke out and remember one of them asking why there were so many Russian military vehicles in the area. Some decent names and the very cute Canuck Emanuelle Chriqui in it. 5/10.

Cowboys and Aliens - I found it hard to get into, but then just switched off my brain and it became fun. Not a fan of Daniel Craig but he was good in it, Olivia Wilde (Irish citizen) was cute and good, Harrison Ford just did enough and it was pure B-movie with big names. Worth a look if you're bored and sitting in an airport. 3/10.

Brest Fortress - Not quite true to life but good all the same. Watched with subtitles (the dubbing was doing my head in) and apart from some good performances, it was a bit depressing at how the movie industry here hasn't moved on since soviet times. In fairness it was compelling subject matter and has a bit of grit to it, though as war movies go it's worth a look. Yana Yesipovich (who played the mother) is a really good actress and stole every scene she was in, plus she's quite sexy. 4/10.

If your into watching hard hitting Hiroshima based Anime movies than have a look at ''Grave of the Fireflys'' can be hard to take a cartoon seriously but its quite good, and jam packed full of misery.

Seen ''Drive'' a few weeks ago also, that's very good. Shot very well and I love all the loud silences.

''Insidious'' is a good one to look at given Halloween is upon us and all, its not a horror full of that cgi crap, just lots of misdirection and a great sound track, Its not terrifying or particularly gore filled but its very creepy.

Bridesmaids was very funny - some laugh out loud moments - but wouldn't watch it again. Wiig is a babe so maybe I'm biased.

The Assasination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. I wanted to like this film so much that I think it let me down a bit. Good but not great.

Xmen First Class - really enjoyable, easy way to while away a couple of hours. Would recommend.

Winter's Bone - Bleak, disturbing, excellent. Would recommend to anyone

Dazed and Confused - watched it again for the first time in at least 5 years. Contains one of my favourite lines:
"That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age."

True Grit: Very enjoyable. The little girl in it was very well acted. 7.5

Tower Heist - a bit of a moralistic tale of how to get back at the "evil" (trade mark the meeja) financial people who lose all your money then swan off. Funny in parts, Some good acting, nice pace, Alan Alda is good - almost the perfect bad guy. Worth a look, at least it'll make you feel better about your overdraft. 5/10

The Rum Diary - can just be planted in any "ex-pat" community, Johnny Depp is good as always, but the movie just gets lost and apart from one or two good lines - "They raped him to death?" and telling him that smoking menthol fags is "artistic", it's just not as good as it's made out of be. It's not artistic, not good dialogue and Giovanni Ribisi is good but wasted. 2/10

Rocky II was on today so I watched part of that but I've seen them all (again) in the last year or so, so here are my ratings for all.

Rocky - 10/10. Honestly what faults are there?
Rocky II - 8/10. Solid, if not as noteworthy as the other early ones
Rocky III - 8.5/10. Change of pace sort of, very enjoyable
Rocky IV - 9.5/10. Excellent again, only the cringeworthy speech at the end (in my opinion) stopped it from being 10/10
Rocky V - 6.5/10. By far the weakest of the bunch but as far as films go there are certainly much much worse.
Rocky Balboa - 7.5/10. Thought it would be **** but ended up being quite enjoyable...good mix of old and new even if somewhat unbelievable.

Saw Toy Story 3 as well last week, I'd say 6/10. Saw the first two when they came out and was obviously much younger, but this one was relatively enjoyable even now.

Rocky IV always has to be considered because of the era it was set in. At that time you'd Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen fighting Cubans and Russkis in Red Dawn, Jim Belushi and Ahnold fighting Russian bad guys in Red Heat. But the pace and sentiment of Rocky IV, as well as the ott fight scenes and death of Apollo Creed, won a generation of fans. The one hypocritical thing was the Western/US snipe about drug use behind the old Iron Curtain - meanwhile Flo Jo and Carl Lewis were walking laboratories. Still, I'd go with the high rating for it.

I watched the Tree of Life the other night. Jaysus. That was a melter of a film. Two days later and I still don't know whether it was an excellent artistic film, or pure gash. I reckon another watching would get the noggin around it. It's set in the distant past with Pitt as the strict father, with flashforwards to modern day Sean Penn as his grown up son. There are interjections of life/planet evolving all through the film.

Loved both. Always recommend both of them. The addition of Rachel McAdams in any movie always helps. The chemistry between Law and Donwey Jr is cracking and the back-chat is something else. The usage of the slo-mos in the second one wasn't as well done as the first but in saying that there wasn't many of them.

Fry's appearance was great and I worried that it would be a cameo rather than him actually acting and whilst he isn't that much different to his real life persona he did just enough to ease my worries.
