Watched The Expendables with my boss, she's a massive fan of the old bash and crash heroes (it's not Sylvester Stallone to her but Sly, while Arnie is her hero), and while the dialogue and acting is at points awful - I tihnk Jason Statham looked as if he was thinking "is it wrong for me to think I'm letting myself down here", there was a little too much blood splashing about, like the latest Rambo, though the piece where Stallone and Statham flew in and blew up a pier was pretty cool.

Watched "Stay Cool" on Friday and despite a pretty decent cast it's just so boring and slow. I can't remember the male lead, but he had about as much chemistry with Winona Ryder than, I don't know, it was poor. Some funny bits, Sean Astin was really trying hard, but it just didn't happen.

Saw Four Lions in the cinema with my sister, slow but funny, love the "F++k them babybels" bit, had us in stitches. Also when the crow man had his mishap crossing the wall, and the incident with the rocket launcher at the training camp.

Watched Knight and Day last night and found it a really good movie. It's Bourne Light with lots of comedy and Tom Cruise is excellent. While never an admirer I think Cameron Diaz is really aging badly, she's a good actress, but she just looked as if she'd had a feed of pints before filming. 8/10.

Seen Robin Hood last night. I really enjoyed it apart from a couple of ridiculous things towards the end which were totally unneccesary. It probably should have been called Robin Hood Begins because I think its obvious they are trying to set it up to be a trilogy

Didn't think it was that bad. It was trying way too hard at times but there was still a few funny moments. I'd say it's a solid 3/5, entertaining enough but never going to make any film of the year lists.

Edit just to say you really have to at least find Will Ferrell amusing, if you don't like him then stay well away.

Shutter Island-8/10,De Caprio good as a cop an investigating goings on in a mental asylum.

I do find him amusing...but that was utter tripe...and to have a message about the whole financial melt down aswell...i just couldn't understand what it was trying to be...
They should have just left it as a movie with The Rock and Samuel L. Jackson at least there characters gave me a laugh!(kinda)

I don't know why - since it's generally gotten average to decent notices - but I hated it. Found it completely unthrilling, limp and quite sloppily directed. And Lawrence Fishburne was just redonkulously silly. Still the best Predator sequel yet, but it ain't saying much...

Saw The Road recently, really enjoyed it although it's quite a brutal watch at times. And it doesn't capture the book's uplifting aspects too well so fairly bleak all round.

Just watched The Other Guys (Monday) and Wall Street 2 (tonight).
The Other guys, some very funny moments, Steve Coogan is as he always is, Marky Mark was good if nutty while Will Ferrell was odd and funny. Michael Keaton was funny too and eliminating two action stars to begin with was brilliant. I don't know how anyone can have watched it and not at least smile thinking of their final scene - it just resonated through the rest of the movie. Coogan's bribes to the police were funny, while Eva Mendes was just smoking - the dinner scene with Marky Mark was painful! 3.5/5

Wall Street 2 - solid, but not a patch on the original, Shia is no Charlie Sheen and there was a big too much moralising in it, without a proper punchline. The ending wimped out and was a bit too fuzzy, would have liked something similiar to The Departed to round it off. But it dealt with some issues well, though if anyone has even scant knowledge of what happened with the crisis and has any depth of thought, it's a bit too glossy. Didn't like the way it was cut, or the music, they just didn't match up. 2.5/5

Chanced upon a TV screening of "The Pursuit of Happiness" starring Will Smith and his young fella.

Pleasantly surprised.

A good performance by Smith - I genuinely hoped the character would win some respite over all of that adversity.

The on-screen bond between father and son was engaging and believeable (for obvious reasons!).

Watched "Iron man 2", found it very underwhelming, too much bickering and shouting between Downey's and Paltrow's characters. Scarlett Johannson looked great, but not really that convincing, and her character wasn't really necessary. Too much star-power in the movie,Imho. Pretty self-indulgent for Jon Favreau to both direct and put himself in the film. Samuel L. Jackson saturation continues, he dosesn't have to take every role offered to him, apparently Nick Furey is black now.

I haven't, but the consensus among critics seems to be that it's about as good as the first one; a little better made, but not much new over the last one.

...Pretty self-indulgent for Jon Favreau to both direct and put himself in the film.
People have done it in the past, and with far bigger roles. Favreau had a short cameo in the first one, and little enough screen time in the second.

The writer of one of the big comic arcs asked Jackson a good few years back if he could use his image for Furey. Jackson was amused, and agreed. So the Furey of the comics has looked exactly like Samuel L. Jackson for quite some time!

Yeah alot of these Marvel Movies so far have alot of the Ultimates comicline tied into them just wait till you see Thor and Captain America next summer, Samuel L Jackson does a good job in this movie much better than the made for Tv movie about Nick Fury the white Nick Fury which starred David Hasslehoff i liked Iron Man 2 my only thing about it though was the fight at the end was over all too easy

I guess I'm out of touch, I used to collect alot of Marvel titles including Iron Man but haven't bought anything in about 20 years, guess I'll google "Marvel ultimate line" and catch up, but I'm still pretty tired of Jackson.

Bad Lieutenant: Port Of New Orleans is quite good, though the second half is an occasionally hilarious, always entertaining mess. Nick Cage gives one of his 'so intense it hurts' performances. Carries it off though. Worth a look though don't expect anything straightforward and don't bother if you hate Cage or Herzog.

It was the secret film at the Dublin Film Festival this year, which I paid for. There was a film crew at the door asking people what they thought it would be. the vast majority were expecting Kick-Ass, or possibly Scott Pilgrim as it had just started appearing in festivals in the States, instead we got this dreck. It's "that" indie film that tries desperately to be every other indie film you've ever seen, without ever really getting why people enjoyed them. Genuinely thought that the writer watched about 15-20 independent movies back to back and set out to write his own version of every one of them. 2 hours of my life that Ben Stiller owes me.

Needless to say, I will not be paying for the secret film at next year's festival.

Saw that as well Wolfie. It was downright frustrating the way the guy just couldn't catch a break at all. I'm not a fan of Will Smith but it was well played. The story kind of pimped the lie of the 'American dream' a bit though I thought. These characters are held up as proof that the rewards are there for those who struggle to overcome their adversity but for many, many similar characters who try as hard the story still ends in the gutter.

Been on a bit of a film frenzy recently. Watched Centurion last night, enjoyable enough at 2 am, could have been developed a little more perhaps. fight scenes are quite vivid!

last fortnight i have watched:

Get him to the Greek - really funny. Puff Daddy was fcking excellent. Jeffrey.
Cemetary Junction - Gervais/Merchant production. A bit predictable but generally alright. Gervais really is a bit too hollywood for my tastes when it comes to happy endings.
The Crazies - very enjoyable. I like Natalie Imbruglia but i'd Radha Mitchell. Timothy Olyphant has become one of my favourite actors.
The Girl Who Played with Fire - decent adaptation but ultimately disappointing.

Saw 'Due Date' over the weekend. I wasn't expecting much based on the reviews but it's really good. It tries a bit too much to be like 'Planes, Trains...' and 'Midnight Run' but that Zach (whatever his name is) from 'The Hangover' is one funny f*cker!

Also saw 'The Killer Inside Me', last week. Not for the faint hearted but great flick. Casey Affleck is quickly becoming the best thing on the silver screen since De Niro, in my opinion.

And 'Ghost Writer' with Ewen MacGregor; poor.

Saw Green zone and The Social Network over the wkd.

Green zone is a fairly standard army iraq flick. Kinda a bourne identity in iraq. Interesting that the film got a significant amount of bad press in the US, considering it draws on the WMD debate (or lack thereof).

The Social Network, interesting story and def worth a look. Best way to summarise is that it was 2 hours long and I didnt notice the time. Havent bothered to look it yet how close to the truth it actually is.
