Seriously?? Apart from the battle on the side of a mountain (which was excellently done, forgetful robots excepted), I thought it was everything that has become wrong about the Star Wars universe. I've enjoyed some of the episodes of the TV series though. Mainly the ones without Ahsuka
Think i was expecting to be dissapointed, it has sat on my shelf for so long because i wasnt sure about it but i sat down watched that but also i was playing dawn of war 2 on the laptop so i didnt really notice any boring bits.
Watched Rambo 1 & 2 last night on blue ray and enjoyed them both.

Rented a movie that came out last year called Quarantine, I thought it was pretty awful. It had that annoying Cloverfield/Blair witch hand held camera approach, plus the lead actress was the annoying sister from Dexter. I liked the ending though.

Despite the fact that I had didn't think it would be that good (I'd read a few less than glowing reviews) and the fact that it was nearly 3 hours long, saw Benjamin Button earlier this week and thought it was absolutely wonderful. The fact that it's 3 hours long just isn't an issue when you succumb to the film's charms and just allow yourself to go with the story. Great performances all round and the CGI is obviously amazing as others have said but it was the themes about death and growing old and about memories and change that made it a great film rather than a decent fantasy. Really enjoyed it and definately the best film I've seen this year.

Just finished watching The Matador with P Brosnan about a hitman who has a bit of a crisis > Enjoyed it a lot, even if it felt a little short, good acting, good story, worth a look and was suprised to see that it only made a few million in the box office

Saw the wrestler last week, great film, you have to feel sorry for Rourke's character.
Hallam Foe - British film about teenage voyeur. Probably the best voyeur film. Very good performance by Jamie Bell.
Motorcycle Diaries - also a good show even if it ends abruptly.
Clerks II
supremely good movie, better than the first in my opinion. Had me in stitches from beginning to end.
4/5

Good Night and Good Luck: decent and fairly interesting historical drama, but just seemed to be missing something to me. Found it a bit dry and surprisingly short at just under 1hr 30. 3/5
Borat: One of those 'I can't believe you haven't seen it before!" films. Finally got around to sseing it the other night and thought it was excellent. Had me in stitches quite often, only wish I'd seen it sooner. Some of it made me think that it was a little unfair as if you recorded for long enough and with enough people, you'd be bound to find someone who'd say something stupid. Put them all together in a row and you create the impression of a nation of idiots. Stilll laugh out loud funny, frequently. 4/5
Frost/Nixon: Brilliant drama, thought the acting was superb particularly Fangella as Nixon. Made me want to learn more about the period which is testament to the impression it made on me. Michael Sheen seems to be a very good character actor too, although I thought his was a better performance in The Queen. I think I'll have to see him in The Damned United at some stage over the next few weeks. 4/5

Foot Fist Way - Brilliantly Funny, any fans of Anchorman / Suoerbad / Tropic Thunder style comedy will love it. Danny McBride stars in the film, its really low budget but is still brilliant, couldn't recommend it more

ha ha yeah - the start is not great in I.D, and I nearly gave up on it, but it gets really good afterwards
twenty four seven is brill - love Bob Hoskins, have you seen Dead Man Shoes - Meadows best me thinks
Dead Man Shoes is brilliant, it surprises me that Paddy Considine wasn't pushed to greater things after this film, a small role in the Bourne Supremacy aside I don't think I've seen him in anything else of note, its definitely Meadows Best but in saying that This is England is mighty good too

The International was much better than I'd expected. The plot's a little thin in places, but it doesn't really lose momentum.

Saw a preview of the Boat That Rocked on tuesday night
Some guy from Universal came out beforehand and said we were the first audience in Ireland to see it. and that the film wasn't quite finished. Apart from minor special effects that needed touching up, I didn't notice anything.
Anyway, great film, very funny, excellent soundtrack, totally recommend it.

Y tu mamá también (And your mother too) - Mexican coming of age road trip for two rich teenagers before they go to college.
Very good if you like something different as makes a change from seeing all Mexicans as poor. Not for those who are offended by sexual dialogue or content.

Walk Hard , The Dewey Cox Story. Absolutely hilarious.
John C. Riley at his best.

Possibly Best ending ever.
Bit like Usual Suspects where if you know the ending film is sort of pointless then.

Seen the climax developing aswell and saw the last twenty minutes for the first time. Definetly recommend it, I appreciate the too much information at the end comment aswell.
"Delicatessen"was on TG4 of course. Still unbeliveable an amazing. Loads of imagery, no need to spoil an ending with everything that goes on in that film.

Gran Torino: Was led to believe this was something other than what it actually was by other people. Not the best but not the worst. Middle of the road for me.

Burn after reading - easy watch but lacked the usual Coen wow factor. 3 out of 5.
Hunger - watched this last night and I was still a little stunned a few hours later after the credits rolled. Moving and shocking in equal measure. 4 out of 5.
Couple of Scorsese's on C4 the last few nights - The Departed which somehow I'd managed not to see before, Gangs Of New York which I had a couple of times.
Pretty good both, 7/10 at least.
Pretty much everyone is dead by the end of both too, Harpo. ;)

If you like the departed check out infernal affairs, Hong Kong gangster flick which the departed was based on(and more or less stole the whole plot from) Far superior IMO

I've refused to watch The Departed for that reason. Pathetic that a remake (some of it supposedly shot for shot, and still somehow an hour longer) could win a best director Oscar. It'd be like de Camp getting a literary award for the Conan books by Howard he rewrote (assuming they were somehow worthy of one - haven't read them, but assume not).

Looks well enough but very disappointing. I'll give it 3 out of 7.

I have avoided watching The Departed for the same reason. Internal Affairs is a cracking film.

how so? i fear the giant tar-brush is making its anti-american appearance once again! those implying that they as a film-loving nation have nothing original to offer would do well to sit down with the collected works of malick, kubrick, welles, coppolla, et al.

I agree with you.
Some of the posts slag off a film thy have never seen. Moronic is a word.
I think "Ganster Genre" and "Film Noir" has to be patiently explained. But they may not want to sit still long enough.
Seen a Maori/New Zealand film about a whale. Even though it had a whale in it it wasn't rip-off of 'Free Willie II'.

The posts in question slag off the awarding of highly prestigious awards for material which is uncontrovertially accepted to be highly derivitive. They do not "slag off a film". I expect better attention to detail from you, Harpo, or at least higher grade trolling.

funny, i bet you didnt even watch the C4 film i was on about:rolleyes:
and to be honest i wasnt starting an anti-american thing - but hollywood does seem to copy a huge amount of foreign material (most without giving any due credit)
This Is England
simply, one of the best movies ive seen in years. Nostalgic in parts and brilliantly acted.
4.5/5
loses a half point for the (kind of) rushed ending.

class film.
Watched Gomorrah and was disappointed after hearing so many good things about it. Disjointed and lacked characters that we actually gave a monkeys about. 5/6 out of 10.
The watchmen was average. Visually it looked stunning but your better off reading the graphic novel. Malin Akerman was brilliant in this :D 6 out of 10.

Watched waveriders Irish surfing documentary in the cinema's at the moment. Very good mainly locals but also Kelly slater and the Malloy brothers also take trips to Ireland do some surfing and some interviews.
Mainly set up north around Bundoran and easkey. The Irish guys are the guys you may have seen in the paper surfing a spot in clare with 50 foot waves ( 2nd biggest wave in the world ) great footage of this. One scene where with a surfer is taking off on a wave he is tiny on the screen and the wave grows and grows to fill the full cinema screen !! scary stuff.
Pretty short at 1hour 10mins but recomended even if you arent big into surfing.

saw "Goodbye Lenin" last nite - have to say was a little disappointed.
I have high standards for German movies at the moment, and with the subject matter it could have been a bit deeper - too lighthearted for me
has anyone seen the Damned Utd yet?????????????????

The Damned United is alright, horribly lacking depth as a movie though. There's some very entertaining bits but it just never really gets to the heart of the story.

excellent! thanks, i saw the trailer for this and one other irish surfing doc., looks fantastic. the rest of the world is starting to pay attention to ireland's west coast because there are some truly monstrous waves there. ail na searrach ("aileen's") might be the wave you refer to in clare, at the base of the cliffs, it can get enormous. i wouldn't call it the 2nd biggest in the world just yet, i think peahi (jaws) in hawaii, maverick's in n. california, and cortes bank (a seamount 100 miles off the coast of san diego) would all lay claim to bigger waves, the former two certainly more consistently so. even then, there are "slab waves" (tremendously thick rather than high) such as teahupoo in tahiti and shipstern's bluff in tasmania, waves of fantastic power and danger. still that shouldn't detract from the massive waves being surfed at aileen's and mullaghmore (which is huge and was tow-surfed in epic conditions last year) in ireland and well done to the surfers and filmmakers for making it so!
anyone remotely interested who wants to have their minds blown, have a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPxLs0Cv4zY

Yip thats aileens, 50ft Its up there with Jaws, as they say in the film its only a matter of time before the biggest wave of the year will be surfed in ireland. With the weather getting wilder, over the next 10 years i can see it being huge. It only really been watched for the last 5 years who knows how big it got before that.
