5 minutes of heaven. Starring James Nesbitt and Liam Neeson.
Absolutely incredible performance from James Nesbitt in this. Liam Neeson comes into to his own later in the film as his character reveals himself.
Nesbitt who plays the character Joe returns some 30/40 years later to meet Allistar (I think) played by Neeson, the man who killed his brother in front of the young Joe on behalf of the UVF. Both men are brought together for a TV programme covering the proposed reconciliation.
A very moving and emotional drama. Still available on BBC iPlayer.
Watched it when it was on tv last week sometime I think, definately well worth catching.

Brazil (1985)
Following a mistake made by central services, the governing bureaucracy in a dystopian future, an innocent man is arrested, and eventually dies in custody. The film follows the attempts of an employee of the bureaucracy to escape the world he lives in, of forms, regulations, processes to be followed, and a perpetually disappointed cosmetic surgery addicted mother, to find the love he sees every night in his dreams. By a happy coincidence, she lives upstairs from the arrested innocent and is trying to get restitution for the grieving widow. At least I think that's what happens. Like many Gilliam films, the true meaning isn't what's on the surface. I get that it's a satire on government taken to extremes, but I had a nagging suspicion midway through the film that nothing actually happens. At all. I might watch it again just to make sense of it. But I probably won't.

Went to see Avatar, 3D was interesting storyline was about as deep as an episode of Captain Planet combined with an episode of Care Bears and a bit of Action Man thrown in. Should have been about an hour shorter. I'd give it 2/5 only worth seeing for the graphics and 3D experience.

Saw Avatar 3D recently.
What more to say? - it's an event movie that was never going to hold up to much scrutiny regarding plot and dialogue.
I enjoyed it for what it was - a visually stunning adventure movie.

Saw "Moon" with Sam Rockwell the other day, thought it was very good and at least deserved an oscar nomination for Rockwell....also a nice pretty good film score from Clint Mansell.
Finally saw Avatar 3D today, very much meh from me
First hour and a half dragged to the point where I considered leaving (and I love being in the cinema, have only walked out of one movie and that was partially due to being very sick as well)
Picked up after that but the story was very samey from every other movie like this
3D was alright but not the leap forward I had been led to believe it was

This Sporting Life (1963) Richard Harris excels as an initially charming pit worker who's excellence on the rugby field gets him a contract with the city rugby team. His new found fame brings out the worst in him, and he takes it out on Rachel Robert's widowed landlady. She initially resists his approaches only to be won over and eventually repulsed by her tenant's attitude off the pitch. Ironically, it is the same attitude he brings to the game that wins him the applause of the crowd.
Excellent sports-based film, and one I wished I'd seen earlier. Highly recommended.
Inglourious Basterds, finally. Excellent show, Tarantino back to his very best, absolutely loved it! Christoph Waltz surely must get the Supporting Actor Oscar as well. 9/10
and The Invention Of Lying. Not quite as good. :D
Not bad though, couple of good giggles in it, specially the Stephen Merchant / Barry cameos. 6.5/10

Saw "Beetlejuice" after many many years (was on Comedy Central). I caught it first time in the cinema and enjoyed it, and it's definitely an odd movie, but just didn't have it 20 years later.

Went to a preview of The Lovely Bones tonight and while it was decent, as with most of my fav books when turned into movies, I was a bit disappointed. Still it made me cry and laugh and was worth the 3 hours round trip to see it! 8/10

For some reason I found myself having breakfast watching "The loneliness of the long distance runner" this morning on tv, it's probably a tough watch, with lots of future stars in it, but the development of the character, with his inbuilt flaws playing a part in the end, is something that makes it very enjoyable. Tom Courtney was terrific in it.

Really, what High grant, j Parker and G Clooney were not as good as they usually are? Wow thats a shock:rolleyes:
Eventually got to see SlumDog Millionaire - was very impressed, it was shocking and exciting, with great acting and a killer storyline
Also rewatched In Bruges - a bit overrated, and the dialogue is fairly childish, the acting just about saved the movie

Cabaret (1972) - Michael York plays an English student who moves to 1930's Germany to complete his German studies, and takes a room in the same house as Liza Minnelli's American cabaret signer, who is also an aspiring actress. Despite being billed as a musical, there's not a lot of singing, apart from the songs in the nightclub where Minnelli works, there's only one other song in the whole film, and it certainly doesn't feel like a musical. The power of the Nazi party casts an ever-growing shadow over the film's proceedings. The picnic scene expresses this growth excellently. A single boy sings a Nazi anthem, and gradually the rest of the attendees join in, until finally the first singer is revealed as a member of the Hitler Youth.
I'm no fan of musicals, but I certainly didn't dislike this. Put it in the "one to watch" files.

Watched the Curious Case of Benjamin Button with the kids last night. I am not a fan of Mr Pitt but due to the fantastic make up for most of the movie I totally forgot it was him and was completely absorbed in the story. It was heartwrenching (yes I cried, as usual) and unrealistic but really worth the long haul. Maybe it was the drugs the doc had just given me but I found it an amusing and entertaining movie. 8/10.

watch Assassination of a High School President earlier.
When the SAT scripts are stolen from the principal's office, and discovered in the locker of the basketball team's star player, and the school's president, the journalist who discovered them becomes the school hero, and is recommended for a prestigious internship. While doing some fact checking on the story, the student discovers a greater conspiracy than he had suspected.
It's a film noir set in a high school, complete with femme fatale, and a gum chewing detective in a trenchcoat. If you liked Brick, you should check this out.

My other half, a devout Gibson worshipper, went to see it in the cinema, with her Granny! They hadn't heard much about it (except Mel made it) and thought he might be in it. She said that after the first few headchoppings and disembowellings? she couldn't handle her popcorn and gummi bears!

I had to give up on that around the hour 30 mark. Painful to watch. How Fincher went from Zodiac to Benjamin Button I'll never know.

Watched District 9 last night. Very very good. Special effects were good, the story good and the chances of a sequel are good. Very happy. Also saw the original Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and was pleasantly surprised. Robert Shaw was very good, didn't know much about Walter Matheau either but he was credible too.
Would highly recommend both.
Also saw The Firm (2009) and Cass. Wouldn't recommend either.

Raising Arizona (1987) Repeat offender Nicholas Cage and his new bride, police officer Holly Hunter, kidnap one of a set of quintuplets after they find out they can't have kids of their own. Hilarity ensues. Coming from the Coen brothers, it has the usual mix of stylish dialogue and quirky, memorable, characters, as well as appearances by John Goodman and Frances McDormand. Not quite as funny as I had been led to believe, but worth checking out.
The Lovely Bones
Only alright. Glad to have seen it, but can see why it's getting a bit of a critical kicking to be honest. Ham-fisted at times, unbelievably hokey in places, though beautiful in others. Saoirse Ronan is very good it must be said, but Stanley Tucci is excellent IMO, in what must have been a horrible part to play. 6/10.

I agree with your assessment but will go see it again as it is still one of my favourite books and though it wasnt translated properly to the silver screen, it is still a great story.
Dead Mans Shoes, one word - excellent
a wise choice Roo69 - have you seen any of Shane Meadows other movies (This is England, A Room for Romeo Brass)? Paddy Considine is in quite a lot of them and is excellent as usual. DMS is my favourite though, if i had to pick.

wall-e is terrific, the first 20 minutes are animated kubrick.
mulholland drive is also fantastic, particularly its eerie wtf-ness. i'm making my way through d. lynch's Twin Peaks tv series now too, quite good, particularly season 1. there are entire internet forums devoted to unpacking lynch's more 'difficult' films (e.g. blue velvet, m. drive, lost highway, inland empire) so if you need to know "what happened", you can google them and find answers.

Watched 2 girly chick flicks that I wont bother you with but also watched Gran Torino and Zach and Miri make a porno. Gran Torino was the pick of them, fine moving performance from Eastwood in an entertaining and emotive movie.

Saw "Big Fan" with Patton Oswalt in it(maybe America's funniest comedian right now, IMO), a pretty good depiction of obsessive fandom, reminded me a bit of the King of Comedy, co-star, character actor Kevin Corrigan also very good in it.

And Angelina Jolie turns in a good performance for a change, best since Girl Interrupted in my opinion.
