John O'Shea starts at LEFT back for Sunderland today at home to Manchester United. Martin O'Neill must have money on United winning the Premiership.

O'Shea subbed off on 42 minutes, looks like a right leg injury. He walked off so hopefully it isn't too bad.

Any truth in the rumour that he played very well at CB yesterday?

He did play well, looked quite assured on the ball and his distribution was good overall. The commentators mentioned how his experience was a real asset to Sunderland on Saturday.

Fergie though, he knew what he was doing when he left O'Shea go. Squeezed the absolute maximum from his body and then flogged him off at exactly the right time. Sad to say that for Ireland and even at centre half he's a rapidly depreciating asset. Mobility waning by the month IMO

He doesn't score many but he is fairly deadly from 5 yards out into an open goal - hardly ever misses.

On the whole of it, I'd actually say that's a positive for O'Shea, considering the manic way Di Canio was acting.

To go from Fergie (who I despise but grudgingly admire) to DiCanio (who is allegedly talented but completely insane) must have been a hard transition.

I'd have much respect for O'Shea for helping get rid of him. I couldn't believe DiCanio's antics in the last week, from putting out the red rag to Sessegnon to his bizarre posturings to the Sunderland fans after the game.

Some crazy stuff in the i-paper here today about the detail of his reign, cant link but some of it was just power happy directionless abuse. Youth players not allowed to even enter training facilities / gym if as much as one first team player was in there, even though the gym is massive. Kitchen staff not being allowed to be on familiar terms with first team members during meal service. (the club has denied eye contact between those serving food to the elite men of the first team was banned)

All supposed to foster an aura around the first team squad, who he then continually publicly rubbished anyway. Directionless dictatorship, but then they bought it like they saw it I guess, hire a fascist admirer, give him power and reap your rewards.

Josh is the captain, the article just says he represented player views to the CEO Maggie Byrne.
A far cry from a roots led revolution that ousted the tyrant with Josh leading the onslaught against the barricades.
Probably it would be perceived as sour grapes if Josh led the charge. He was probably invited to a meeting to confirm that Di Canio had in fact lost the dressing room.

The 3-0 against Newcastle bought him a great amount of love from the fanbase, but it was eroded so fast. Some of the stories, like ice being banned from soft drinks, sound too crazy to be true.

Sounds like a right nutter, no surprise he lost the dressing room, good that John showed leadership in helping
get rid, seems Di Canio made the mistake of not having O'Shea imprisoned, shot or 'disappeared'.
If you are running a dictatorship you have to go the whole hog, half measures won't do it.

Josh was badly at fault for United's goal tonight, which was 90 seconds from costing Sunderland a League Cup final spot, but his bacon was saved by Phil Bardsley. Awful penalty shootout too - United missed 4 and Sunderland 3. Poor Keiren Westwood, having to sit injured in the stands while his competitor writes himself into club folklore.

United were really scraping the bottom of the barrel with those who stepped up... RVP, Rooney, Giggs, Nani, Carrick and Anderson all decent penalty takers and unavailable for different reasons. I'd say Hernandez couldn't physically walk anymore after the shift he put in. He'd surely have been a better bet than Phil Jones!

Poor from O'Shea for the goal alright, he seemed to get totally sidetracked. Hopefully they'll give City a game in the final, I wouldn't put it past them completely as they defend pretty well at times and tend to do okay against City.

Tomorrow, the Sun has a piece from Di Canio on his time at Sunderland. It's the Sun and an aggrieved former boss, so lots of salt pinches are advised, but Di Canio really lays into O'Shea apparently, dubbing him "two-faced".

Why am I not surprised O'Shea is his target? Funny how Di Canio rang O'Shea with his tail in between his legs after making a fool of himself scapegoating him after one of their (many) losses. What a coward.

It's understood that O'Shea was one of the players (along with Brown and Cattermole) who led the campaign against him in the boardroom. No surprise Di Canio would still be bitter about it. O'Shea and Brown grew up under Ferguson and Keane, so it's hardly like they're cosseted players who are resistant to an authoritarian manager. Truth is that Di Canio was the right man to keep up a team in dissaray, but the wrong man to lead them into a league campaign.

Correcting the myths of O'Shea's career

JOSH: No Rift twixt me and Keane.

Sunderland Defender John O'Shea has said suggestions of a rift between himself and Roy Keane are rubbish.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United Main Man, has caused a few stirs with comments he made in his recent Autobiography. Ferguson discussed a Roy Keane interview for the clubs Television feed, in which he criticised a number of then United players such as O'Shea and Darren Fletcher.

Keane now works alongside Ireland Manager Martin O'Neill, and it is thought within FAI confines that any of his past comments in which any current players might hold a grudge over could cause problems.

O'Shea however told an Irish Radio Station that he and Keane were fine.
"Books through the years can be a slight exaggeration or whatever. The people that are involved in the books have to sell the books, they highlight certain things. Books can be misleading in some senses. That's why I stick to the Harry Potter books, with maybe some 1800s History thrown in there." Said the jovial O'Shea.

He continued, "Roy was always wanting the best and he always looked out for me. When I was a lad and the other players were going to have a go with me, covering my car in shaving cream, or putting eggs in my shoes, or what have you, Roy would always be there helping me wipe it off, making me understand it was not personal. Roy took Fletch and I out one night and we had steaks so thick I didn't eat meat for a week, had drinks and a show all on him. He even bought me a new Tuxedo to wear to one of Becks charity events. Years later I tried to pay him back and he wouldn't have it. We used to have water fights sometimes with those super soakers,to keep things light once in a while, and Roy would pick me for his team. It was a blast. We would soak Ole Gunnar and Giggsie would take hostages. It was great fun."

"In my eyes, he was always very good to me, in terms of me wanting to get better and wanting to improve. That was always the case with any young players coming through and I would say Fletch would agree with me. Roy even let me walk his dog a few times, which was said to be an honour, though I was never thrilled about picking up after it!"

Ireland Manager Martin O'Neill told a radio station that he did not think there would be any problems. "John has played for quite a few years and he is a great professional." Said O'Neill.

Laughable that O'Shea is dropped. I'm not his biggest fan and the guy has his off days but he is far more consistent than Brown or Cuellar.

I wonder if Poyet has learned his lesson or will his ego get in the way of common sense, like his predecessor?
