If employing them as barmaids got round the salary cap, they'd pack the squad with them.

Picked up a knock and went off just after half time. Hopefully it's nothing serious.
edit: nope, Fabio played right back the entire match.

He was listed as a right back in the team sheet, but now having watched the game myself, you're right. He couldn't even make it through fifty minutes before getting hauled off though!

You watched that pretty quickly. He went off injured having played well.

Yeah, I have this PVR thing that lets me fast forward through most of the match. In injury time now. Next up the Liverpool game.

That's all well and good Danny, but could he play for Gibraltar? That woulda p*ssed the Danes off real good.

O'Shea assist for Smalling across the front of goal ruled out for offside, although Smalling half-scuffed it and nearly missed. 3-1 to United now through Anderson.

I think Foley should be right back, Dunne & O'Shea the centre halves and Wilson at left back.

think i heard earlier it was a calf injury and that he signalled to come off as early as the 22nd min. hopefully just a knock if he could stay on till HT.
300th start for utd today after making his first start in 1999. must be up there with irwin for silverwear, doesnt get the credit he deserves imo
He has a similar enough trophy haul to Irwin. Premier League and Champion's League are the ones that really count I guess. O'Shea is two behind on that count but could end up with another Champion's League this season if he's (very) lucky.
John O'Shea
5 x Premier League (assuming they win this one)
1 x FA Cup
3 x League Cup
1 x Champion's League
1 x World Club Cup
Denis Irwin
7 x Premier League
3 x FA Cup
1 x League Cup
1 x Champion's League
1 x Cup Winner's Cup
1 x Intercontinental Cup (same as World Club Cup I think)
1 x European Super Cup

Irwin was some full back.
Well done to O'Shea again. Great squad player and Mr steady for Man Utd. He'll get 6/7 whenever called upon. The Da Silva twins will be ahead of him in pecking order from next season but there are not too many players who can play RB, LB, CB, defensive midfielder and gk! He didn't seem to pull up in first half with an injury so hope it was just a precaution when the physio looked at it at HT.

Maybe Ive the green glasses on but I really dont see the attraction of the Da Silva's ahead of JOSH. These days, JOSH is solid, reliable, versatile, hardly ever makes a mistake and is decent going forward. In many cases, now very similar to Irwin.
The one advantage the Da Silvas have over JOSH is that they are more energetic and have more pace going forward. But they equally are prone to a big error. There is no way I would start either of them ahead of JOSH in the CL final for example.

Was having a look around to see if there's any indication as to who'll get the nod at right-back for the Champions League final tomorrow night. The general thinking appears to be that Fabio might get in there ahead of O'Shea, but we'll have to wait and see: http://www.goal.com/en-gb/match/59539/barcelona-vs-manchester-united/preview
The Premier League champions have few injury problems, but Sir Alex Ferguson has decisions to make, particularly over who gets the nod at right-back, a position which the Da Silva twins and John O’Shea have shared this season. Fabio has been picked for the big games recently and looks favourite to start.
Interestingly, I also came across this from last year: http://www.goal.com/en/news/11/transfer-zone/2010/02/18/1796008/barcelona-interested-in-manchester-uniteds-john-oshea-report
Barcelona were chasing after John O'Shea? Not sure how I missed that at the time.
Stuttgart88
27/05/2011, 8:49 PM
They were also after Gary Breen, allegedly.
Funny thing is, O'Shea would get into Barca's team for tomorrow. If Puyol is playing left back O'Shea would be better than Mascherano at CB. If Puyol played CB, O'Shea could play LB, assuming Abidal isn't ready yet.
He's actually quite a cultured footballer is our John. I watched him live at Chelsea back in Feb or March and he passes the ball as crisply and confidently (for United anyway ) as a midfielder.

No place for O'Shea in United's starting line-up or on the bench tonight, unfortunately. Fabio gets the nod with Rafael missing out as well.

In hindsight they could have done with him I think. Still, a fresh JOS for Saturday is essential.

O'Sheas versatility is very much valued by Ferguson, I don't think he'd want to see him leave at all. Browns age and a younger replacement being brought in and Gibson just generally not being good enough makes the other two more realistic to leave.
Edit: The word on redcafe is a triple bid was launched by Sunderland, United dismissed the offer for JOS and they were willing to discuss a double bid for Brown and Gibson.

It wouldn't make sense for that to be the case. O'Shea started 18 premier league games including the most important one against Chelsea. Ferguson rates him as an important player. He has a good injury record, modest wage, is only 30 and is popular with the fans. It'd be really illogical to want him out, the guy could play as a squad player for any team in the world, hes good and versatile enough for it. He's better than a club like Sunderland anyway.

Fergie did the same with Phil Neville moved him on young enough to get 4 or 5 season elsewhere. O'Shea may not want to move either. I think regular football every season will prolong his Irish career. I'm suprised someone like Spurs or Everton haven't made enquiries yet.

would like to see him go to a club where he is given more responsibility. dunne will be retiring in a few years and o'shea will be top dog for us then. he seems to struggle when put in a leadership role for us at the moment, so a bit of experience at club level at the likes of sunderland would be priceless

Daniel Taylor in the guardian (I'm pretty sure he's one the Guardian's inside-line-ers) is of the opinion Josh is off, not because of Liverpool signing Henderson, but because of United signing Phil Jones, and more than likely Varane....
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/jun/09/sir-alex-ferguson-phil-jones-manchester-united
For Phil Jones, now only an official announcement away from being confirmed as the most expensive teenager in English football, it came down to a position where virtually every top club in the country were fluttering their eyelashes in his direction.
Only Manchester City out of the Premier League's top six did not follow up their interest in the former Balshaws High School pupil who still lives with his parents, Mark and Helen, in Leyland. City had watched him closely and were impressed by his potential, the way Jones had slipped seamlessly into top-flight football and the leadership skills that had led to comparisons with a young John Terry, but concluded that the Blackburn Rovers player made too many mistakes and may not be value for money.
At Manchester United they saw something different: someone with such a rare talent they could not allow him to join one of their rivals – even though the timing did not entirely suit.
Sir Alex Ferguson had been leaning towards waiting a year before it became apparent he could not delay any longer. Jones was already mulling over offers from Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur by the time United moved in and triggered the £16m release clause to gazump everyone.
Chelsea had also begun the process of trying to extract him from Ewood Park but Jones had misgivings about moving to London and, to quote one friend, "did not fancy Liverpool". By the time Arsène Wenger rang on Tuesday night the teenager's mind was already clear. Ferguson, always aware of the benefits of getting the family onside, had already spoken to Jones's parents, promising that United would provide a stable environment for a player thrust into a new life of riches and potential glories.
The only issue for Jones now is how long he has to wait. Wes Brown and John O'Shea will shortly be leaving Old Trafford but Jones is still joining a club with an established central defensive partnership in Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, an accomplished backup in Chris Smalling and a fourth player, Jonny Evans, who has endured a difficult year but still shown sporadic glimpses of developing into a top defender.
The signing, moreover, does not necessarily mean Ferguson will abandon his plans to recruit the 18-year-old Raphaël Varane from Lens. Varane, like Jones, has come to United's attention after a series of outstanding displays in central defence and as a holding midfielder. He would cost around £8m.
The player with the most legitimate cause for concern is Evans, who seems certain to be shunted into the role of fifth-choice centre-back only a year after being the first-choice replacement if either Ferdinand or Vidic was absent.
But Ferdinand, too, could be forgiven for wondering what Jones's arrival means for him over the next couple of years. Ferdinand is 33 later this year and his injury problems mean he may be approaching his final season as an automatic first-team pick.
What cannot be disputed is that it leaves United's defence in tremendous shape for the short, medium and long-term. An £18m deal for Spain's Under-21 international goalkeeper, David de Gea, should be finalised with Atlético Madrid in the coming weeks. Patrice Evra admitted on Wednesday "this wasn't my best season", culminating in his poor performance in the Champions League Final, but the Frenchman is still a talented, attacking left-back. Add to that, the development of the 19-year-old Da Silva twins, Rafael and Fabio, and potentially Varane, and Ferguson, that strategic planner, is entitled to think he has put in place United's defence for the next decade.

According to this, a deal for O'Shea, Gibson and Wes Brown has been accepted. Perhaps personal terms are still to be negotiated.
