They had 7 players last week who were full internationals. With Derry's injuries I can't see any good result.

Whose out candy, besides Duffy?

Ye were never in danger of going out - or even losing - for sure, and I can understand (indeed, even predicted) the desire to save energy in warm conditions with a healthy first-leg advantage.

But it would have been nice all the same to show something that'd give active hope, if not for Ludogorets (who are a properly good team), for the other two bites at the cherry to get into the group stage, and that a repeat of the Flora debacle isn't a possibility.

That's trying to find the downside of course. A game against a better team will naturally push the side more, so as I say, hopefully there's another gear there when required.

Plus a win would've meant more coefficient points and more money (?) for the club.

Wouldn't have made any difference to either for rovers.

No extra money, and I think club coefficient is now based on the round you reach, not individual match results.

It would have meant an extra 0.125 for the country coefficient, which just decides what round clubs start in.

And it'd be nice to know we can win two legs against a Maltese side, which we've still never done in six meetings. That'd be a sign of the progress we're always looking for.

I said last night i would have liked us to push on but to be honest if we had done that and shipped a goal people would have said Bradser was a mug.
If they had scored we could have gone up a few levels i believe.
The sight of Gaffney picking up the ball and dribbling back into his own half multiple times summed it up,

I see Rovers club ranking now 141 with a Co-efficient of 9.000. You would expect that should have them seeded again next season in CLQ1

Well I'd say he learned not to go into big european games with half the team crocked but I'm not sure we learned anything from last year that's going to help against the 10 time Bulgarian champions who've only been in the top division for 10 years....

But I'm all ears if you've got some lessons to dish out?

Now that we can actually see how the next round shapes up there's actually a massive opportunity here for Rovers if they can come out on the right side of the draw again.
Funnily enough I think they actually now have a better chance of getting into the Europa league than the Conference league.

Assuming they lose the next round, the EL playoff will be against one of the 9 losers from UCLQ2.
Shkupi, HJK, Linfield, Zalgiris, Pyunik/Dudelange would all be close enough to 50/50 ties.

Ferencváros
Match 1
Slovan Bratislava

Dinamo Zagreb
Match 2
Shkupi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KF_Shkupi)

Qarabağ
Match 3
Zurich

HJK
Match 4
Viktoria Plzeň

Linfield
Match 5
Bodø/Glimt

Žalgiris
Match 6
Malmö FF

Ludogorets Razgrad
Match 7
Shamrock Rovers

Maribor
Match 8
Sheriff Tiraspol

Maccabi Haifa
Match 9
Olympiacos

Pyunik
Match 10
F91 Dudelange

Whereas looking at potential ECL PO opponents it will be one of 5 of the following.
Which most likely will include the Poles, Romanians and Kazkh teams.

Team 1
Agg.
Team 2

Shakhtyor Soligorsk
Bye (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bye_(sports))

RFS

La Fiorita
Match 1
Ballkani

Víkingur Reykjavík
Match 2
TNS

Sutjeska Nikšić
Match 3
KÍ Klaksvík

Hibernians
Match 4
FCI Levadia

Tirana
Match 5
Zrinjski (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C5%A0K_Zrinjski_Mostar)

Lech Poznań
Match 6
Dinamo Batumi

Cluj
Match 7
Inter Club d'Escaldes

Tobol
Match 8
Lincoln Red Imps

Lots of football still to be played, but basically from an LOI perspective we don't want any underdogs winning in the UCLQ2 ties and we are hoping for some shocks in the ECL Champions path.

Terrible setup defending that corner. No one at the near post, everyone including the keeper a few yards away from goals - that was an invitation for a curled attempt.

What attendance are Sligo Rovers expecting against Balla tonight, any news on ticket sales?

There are three seated stands in the Showgrounds giving a total seated capacity of 4,000. The Treacy Avenue stand has a capacity of 1,800 seats. Opposite that is the Jinks Avenue stand which has 900 seats. The third stand is the Volkswagen Bank End which is behind the goals at the opposite end and has 1,300 seats but is uncovered.

Derry 1-0 down and B36 Torshavn go 1-0 up - means we've actually fallen behind the Faroese league in the UEFA rankings.

Long way to go this season (including Sligo who should win this evening) and obviously the Faroese have been getting points in preliminary rounds we got a bye through - but still and all...

It has to be said, the mentality of every LOI except Rovers is absolutely dire at the moment and these farcical performances in Europe are evidence of that. Derry should have been 2 nil up after 10 mins and putting the opposition under serious pressure at home, 1chance the other end and its game over. As for sligo losing to a pub team...

I make no apologies for disparaging dundalk at every opportunity but put hoban in on those derry chances and he'd have the mentality to finish. They have guys in their ranks at dundalk who believe themselves equal of the European opposition they would face, in stark contrast to the derry & sligo lads it seems...

Fenlon, on a recent podcast, said the league is poor because the teams below Rovers (except dundalk presumably) are just happy finishing in the European places but show no mentality to go and win the league. These european performances tonight's back that up, in my opinion. Hopefully sligo can get their head out of their hole for long enough to put away the Welsh dog and duck 11.

14/07/2022, 7:12 PM
Hoban's European record is awful (5 in 23), so I wouldn't bank on him, but there's a definite point in there alright. I think it's partly that it's a transition period where Cork/Dundalk aren't a patch on what they were, Derry haven't yet got to their level, and I'm not sure who else is likely to get there. Possibly Cork, if they're anyway properly run.

Though I don't think it's a problem limited to this year - Rovers v Flora was just as bad a result for example, and there's been plenty of key missed chances down the years.

Mura are 1-0 up into the second half - 3-1 on aggregate - so they should be playing Pat's next week.

Bala just missed a one-one-one it seems.

I think Dog and Duck 11 is a bit harsh on Bala, who've been regulars in Europe and have picked up a fair bit of cash from that, but they are a small Welsh side a month away from their first league game of the season, so while Sligo should finish stronger, it's really poor to be facing into extra time after 150 minutes of the tie. Winning these games is pretty much the main reason we switched to summer soccer.
