Eoin Wearen is rumoured to be training with the club that cannot be mentioned. Ex Boh's and Sligo I believe.
Any good?

No doubt about it

Strange post.

Interesting signing, hard to know how good he is until he starts playing but its always interesting to see players come in from outside the usual channels. As mentioned Kalounas was brilliant, if this guy is 80% the player he was then Dundalk have done well. Look forward to seeing him at the Presidents cup game.

Wearin is a a classy centre mid, was supposed to be signing up for another season but the club seem to have opted for Buckley instead. Would be sorry to see him leave Bohs. Having said, that he missed almost all of last season with an ACL injury, so not sure how that has affected him.

He has all the raw talents to be a very good CM, but just never seemed to impose himself enough. Also has a bad knack of picking up serious injuries. He missed almost all last season - he made a sub appearance in the last game of the season at Dalyer if I remember correctly. I think he also missed a whole season a couple of years back with a broken leg.

In fairness he has his moments, but 'classy' would be stretching it. Went missing in games with us too. from what I can remember of him.

Money and ambition to try UK football.

Vastly superior contract at Oldham compared to the substantial deal on offer at Oriel Park.

Without knowing contract details its hard to say what McEleney was offered either here or over in the UK.

In an interview with Paul O'Hehir in the Irish Mirror, Stephen Kenny confirms the significant financial realities between the top end of League of Ireland and the lower end in England

“We did everything to keep him but ultimately we’re still not competing financially with clubs at the lower end in England.
“Financially the move was important to him as he’s 25 now and he has a family.
“But we have to aspire to be at that level in the future and not be losing our best players to Oldham and St Johnstone.

What Kenny said may never happen. Year after year we lose some of our brightest talents to clubs at the bottom of the food chain in England. The utterly harsh reality is, that there's hardly ever two red pennies to rub together here and as long as that continues, players will select Oldham Athletic instead of Dundalk , Tranmere instead of Shamrock Rovers and Barnet instead of Bohemians.

Sligo signed ex Liverpool striker Adam Morgan. He's bounced around like a vagabond the last few years but it's still an impressive signing.

Dean Byrne has signed for Longford from one of the AUL clubs. Apparently he’s been scoring for fun at that level. Hopefully he’s the next Sully.

In relation to the Kenny interview, it is going to be difficult/impossible even for a LoI club to able to match the financial terms lower league English clubs can offer our best players anytime soon. What Aberdeen achieved under Alex Ferguson was unique and I suppose the North sea oil was a factor. Also this was pre Bosman times. One thing that could change this situation would be an All-Ireland league.

He wasn't offered a contract by Rovers so even if he had gone to Tranmere it would have been irrelevant.

The reality is that 99% of all League of Ireland players would bite your hand off for a chance to play with Tranmere. You and other Rovers posters here seem to be implying, for no apparent reason, that Rovers players are the exception. I would doubt that very much.

Tranmere Rovers play in the National League, if a player has anything about him surely he could find a move to a better club. If you are in your 30s or 40s then you could be forgiven for thinking Tranmere are a big club but its been a long time since they were relevant.

Tranmere are not a big club, and they are a club in decline, they are already looking at scrapping their academy to cut costs. If they dont get promoted back to the football league this season they will be in serious danger financially.

Pick any measure you like.

Tranmere Rovers are a much bigger club than any club in the LoI.

If the money was right why wouldn't a fella move there from an Irish club?

Still at least we've moved on from the days when fellas were on here with a straight face trying to convince us there were clubs in ireland who were as big as some of the top clubs in Scotland.

OK -

What about measuring European participation?

Or how do they measure on the number of players who have graduated to play international football?

Apples and oranges.

By that logic FC Vaduz dwarf any league of Ireland club.

But, point taken, if you want to use a stupid measure you could argue a Dundalk are bigger than a Tranmere.

You'd be wrong. But you could argue.

I'm not arguing anything, simply responding to your invitation to "pick any measure you like"

BTW, your use of the word 'stupid' is unnecessary, provocative and not conducive to a reasonable debate.

The graphic on average income comparing LoI with SPL, English Championship, League 1 and League 2 is interesting

National League Conference (5th tier) side Torquay Utd had average wages of £375 according to their manager in 2015 - over 52 weeks that about £18,500 or about 65% of the figure quoted for LoI in the graphic

I didn't see anyone implying that. Plenty of our players have left to play at that level before.

It's nearly always interesting when a player comes into the league that few people know about. I hope he gets some game time at Rovers. It seems this lad is delighted to get a LoI club:

And Coustrain – who had been playing with Ballynanty Rovers – has now agreed terms with the club.
Coustrain, who turns 22 this Monday, said: “I’m extremely happy to be here
“It’s been a tough road the last few months, I was out of football after coming back from Raith Rovers. I tried to get as many games as possible under my belt so I would be ready if a team came in for me.

After a legal threat from somebody criticised by some Limerick posters, all mention of the club is verboten.

We use this 'club that can't be named' stuff instead. It's so subtle Dahamsta hasn't a clue what's going on.

He might have been down the pecking order a bit this season, but I'm still disappointed that he's gone. I thought he was great last season, and very versatile in terms of positions he can play. Great squad player.
