Macroom A and B match reports..

AUL Premier League

Knockavilla 1 Macroom 5

by Denis Canty

After a difficult Mossie Linnane Cup run, and certain quarters suggesting that Macroom might be out of their depth in the Premier League, this Macroom side silenced their critics, with a blistering performance away to sweep aside Knockavilla.

But Macroom did not have it all their own way. Knockavilla hit the front after three minutes, when a header from Robert Walsh looped over Macroom keeper Dean Knight. Macroom came roaring back however, and scored two goals inside six minutes. First, when a sublime whipped cross from Darrell Holden found Keith Holden, whose header arrowed into the bottom corner on 7. Two minutes later, the away side used the direct route, when a kick out from Knight deceived the Knockavilla defence, and Keith Holden header lobbed the onrushing keeper. The rest of the half saw less of the goals, but the same level of Macroom dominance in possession. The closest either side came was when a sublime half volley from Darrell Holden was kept out by fingertips.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Macroom enjoying lots of possession, and Tommy Pittam and Martin Corcoran marshalling the dangerous Robert Walsh. The away side had a series of corners in the first fifteen minutes of the second half. And this pressure led to reward on 58, when a good corner from Paul Healy was nodded home by Keith Holden to complete his hatrick. Macroom got their fourth on 70, when a free kick from Healy was well saved, but Martin Corcorans resulting effort was deflected into the net. Keith Holden got his fourth on 85, when a great cross by Trevor Horgan was headed home by Holden, despite the best efforts of the home sides keeper. Best for Macroom were Keith and Darrell Holden and Bryan Horgan.

Macroom: Dean Knight, John Breen, Tommy Pittam, Martin Corcoran, Darragh Deasy, John James Healy, Anthony O'Donoughue, Bryan Horgan, Darrell Holden, Keith Holden, Paul Healy. Subs: Trevor Horgan, David Golden, James O'Connor.

AUL 2A

Macroom 0 Rylane Celtic 0

by Denis Canty

Macroom dropped two valuable points at home against a dogged and determined Rylane side at the Town Park on Saturday.

The away side came to Macroom and set their stall out to defend, and they did it well. Macroom had the best of the early running in terms of possession, but had to deal with Rylane on the counter attack. Macroom had the first chance, when the lively Denis Cronin beat his man and whipped in a cross which was met by Patrick Burns, whose effort was saved comfortably. Full back Darragh Crowley was very unlucky on 15, when his late run and volley hit the side netting. Denis Cronin then had an effort on 22, after being set up by Barry Fitzgerald, but Cronin's effort was blazed over. Rylane had their defence to thank again, whose centre back put his body on the line to stop a fierce effort from Steven Crowley. Macroom had their best chance of the first half, when after a high boot met the head of Barry Fitzgerald inside the box, the ref gave an indirect free kick. Fitzgerald took it, and his effort needed an outstanding save from the Rylane keeper to keep the scoreline level at the break.

The second half continued on a similar vein, with Rylane disrupting Macroom's usual slick passing and possession game. The chances were very few and far between in the second half, with much of the play down the centre, which suited the away side. Macroom keeper Peter Burns continued to be a virtual spectator in the second half, but the away sides keeper could have easily joined him as a spectator. Macroom seemed to be able to go so far, but the Rylane defence were holding strong. The home side nearly nicked it at the death, but good defending blocked an effort from John Corkery. Best for Macroom were Darragh Crowley, Barry Fitzgerald and Brendan O'Mahony.

Macroom B: Peter Burns, Darragh Crowley, John Ronan, Mark O'Callaghan, David Murnane, Denis Cronin, Steven Crowley, Brendan O'Mahony, Daniel Downey, Barry Fitzgerald, Patrick Burns. Subs: John Corkery, Gary Elston, Andrew Hegarty, Conchur Murray, Denis Canty, Alan O'Connor, Chris Cronin.

A.U.L. 2A

Killowen 3 C.F.C. Banteer 1

A badly needed win for us as a defeat would have seen us slip towards the foot of the table. As it stands we are now mid table and four points behind the leaders. It was a point emphasised to the players before kick off and they responded with a good all round performance.
We scored early on after our centre forward took advantage of a mistake in the Banteer defence. We had a lot of possession in the opening half but failed to add a second goal. Banteer didn't pose a threat during this time but still managed to score an equaliser just before the break as we failed to deal with a long kick from their keeper and allowed their centre forward in for a simple header. We went ahead again a minute into the 2nd half courtesy of a well struck free kick. It was 3-1 five minutes later as we converted a penalty at the 2nd attempt, the referee ordered a retake as their keeper moved off his line before the 1st kick was taken. From then on it was all Banteer as we were stuck in our own half. However, our keeper wasn't worked as our midfield and defence held firm and forced Banteer into shooting from distance. A good win for us but plenty room for improvement.

Blackstone Rovers 2 v 4 Wilton.

A huge crowd out in Monard for the double header with Blarney Street & Leeside.....I wont mention the parking.....lets just say the theory about footballers and no brains was given a hefty boost!!!!

We started ok and had a half chance or two before conceding on 13. A goal for each side within a minute (Skilly made it 8 goals in 7 games so far this season) made it 2-1 on 25. Another goal before the break left us two down and a mountain to climb. We pulled one back midway though the half and had a few chances to equalise before the scored again with 10 to go. Best side we have met in my opinion, the two ex LOI lads stood out as did Shane O Neill.

I was really down after the game, but, on further analysis of our defeats so far - all have been Premier sides, and all have been from top half Premier sides. I think we will be ok. Its funny how we were miserly on either end of the field last year, but, much more crowd pleasing this year with goals at either end.

Lets insult Mr Holden again before any Cork AUL game so, Shilts,........we might see a hat-trick. Dont you love the names he made up for the match report when we all know its him(only messing Holden!!)

Fairview told me that they deserved their draw, if not more, from their game with Grattan. They thought Grattans peno was dubious. Tough for them now with Brian Sull & Shinkwin gone.

Prem A league results went as I thought they might. Our first one at the weekend away to Leeds - two good games last year. Looks like it might be a fight between 6 teams to join Greenwood, but Kanturk blazed out of the traps last year and suffered later on. Its a long time before medals will be given out.

I agree with you Ola

Only using you as an example cos you mentioned players,Scaff - did your club e-mail him?

I will be honest and said we didnt pay too much attention before we had our first involvement in the AUL panel in 2008. I know clubs should support it more, but, honestly we didnt. Might have checked the score but felt no attachment cos we didnt even come across the players during the seasons in 2B and 3B. As an example, whether the lads get on the panel or not, Im sure Corkbeg will keep more of an eye on the team. Many gems down the leagues and its only fair that anyone who deserves a shot gets one.

The only problem I would have is that the timing is a bit late - maybe should try and be a few weeks earlier.

On the management thing, I think we should be glad we have the manager. He has experience, though the league conflict issue is not ideal. Im assuming that none of us applied for the job and I bet that there wasnt many volunteers at all.

Fair enough Bieber - i stand corrected! And tell me Bieber who do you manage o rwhat club are you involved with - easy to sit on the fence and criticise people - the AUL are always looking for volunteers

In fact if anyone has a problem with how the AUL choose their manager or anything else for that matter why dont ye write a letter to them expressing your opinion - dont forget to sign it at the bottom ;-)

Not ideal having AUL manager, managing a munster senior league side. what happens a few months down the line if bandon and AUL playing at same time and there will be clashes with training i would say. o regan is also manager of Cork U15 team!! but as said above aul must not be bogged down with applications.

Niall O'Regan is well qualified and experienced enough to carry on doing the Cork AUL managers job.
A semi final appearance last year was a good performance considering the amount of players who had left for the MSL from the 2009 team.
Wins against Limerick and Tipperary are never easy at this level.

Also, I couldn't imagine too many good candidates making themselves available if the post became vacant.

My only reservation would be that the Cork AUL team would be seen to be a trial team for a club outside the AUL, if any players subsequently joined the manager's new club, Bandon.

If there is evidence of this happening then AUL club managers might not want their players becoming involved for fear of being poached, and the representative team would suffer as a result.

Of course this could just as easily happen with an AUL based manager, but the players would still be available to play Oscar Traynor Cup with the Cork AUL the following year.
This would not be the case if they played in the MSL.

Best wishes to Niall and his management team for the season.
Hopefully we haven't let the fox in amongst the hens ;)
