Why would the thread be closed? Lots of former internationals still have threads to post in if people wish to discuss them for whatever reason.

Just because of the annoying way he keeps dragging the issue out - this was basically the big window of opportunity where he could commit to contributing to the Irish team for a few years and a couple of campaigns and he chose to not take it but, more annoyingly, he won't just do the honourable thing and retire from international football once and for all. So essentially closing his thread would be a protest.

Don't read it then. Even if he decides to retire from international football, people can still talk about him if they want. The Shay Given thread is still used, the Damien Duff thread, etc.

Well fine then - you stay and continue getting dragged into the madness that is the Stephen Ireland "will he won't he?" soap opera - I'm going to storm off in a huff to the Jack Grealish thread:p

Even the John Aldridge thread saw a little action recently.

Ireland vows to grow beard until he scores 5 goals.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/stokes-stephen-ireland-vows-grow-4030314

This is what he would look like if he extended that vow to include the day he makes his belated International return.

Ireland also revealed how he was being paid just £85 a week during his spell at Manchester City.

Don't believe that!!

It was 85 quid too much considering he could still afford this:

Scored two for Stoke today after coming on as a sub. Keeper made a mess of both of them really, but both goals from near enough the edge of the box.

And he had steak and chips for lunch. Both are about as equally relevant to the Irish Forum.

About as relevant as the thread on Jamie O'Hara, Kevin Nolan, and every other "is this guy eligible" thread in existence on foot.ie. The difference is, however, Stephen Ireland is, in fact, Irish and has a handful of caps for Ireland.

As pointed out by Charlie above though, if you don't like it, you can choose to ignore it.

Ireland picked up a nasty injury at the weekend on the back of his leg after a tackle by Maynor Figueroa. Just to fore-warn, the link contains a fairly gory photograph of the cut: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/11442852/Revealed-Stephen-Irelands-gruesome-injury-after-horror-tackle-by-Maynor-Figueroa.html

But he was saying he needs to do it all the time.

Here we go again (http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/stephen-ireland-back-in-irish-frame-after-key-role-in-stoke-fightback-31455694.html)

Baseless article really and factually incorrect with regards S.Ireland winning the penalty on Saturday, as it was Joselu.

I wish him no ill will.

I don't see what's funny about someone breaking their leg.

Guy is approaching 30 and in last year of his contract.

He already suffered from having no pre-season last season.

Deja-vu.

The virtual (indignant) finger was pointed at Stu.
If one turns context on it's ears, cut a smiley from one part of Stu's post and paste it into another part, then we could make a solid case against Stu for laughing at the plight of SI.

I don't care enough about SI to feel anything atm, but I wouldn't rule out indulging in a bit of schadenfreude in the near future.
I guess Roy won't be pitching his tent outside Stephen's house now.

Let's be honest, there are a litany of things to laugh about when it comes to SI the man and SI the career curve. Breaking his leg is not one of them.

I suppose hearing that Ireland has broken a leg is about as relevant as finding out that Bertie Ahern has broken a leg. Sorry to hear it (with a smidgen of schadenfreude) but not remotely relevant to the Irish team.

Stephen is probably damning his luck that it didn't happen during the regular season, instead of when he was about to jet off on his summer holidays.
