Malcolm Glazer.

Who was 85, and hadn't been seen in public since a stroke eight years ago.

And his son, who's also at Manchester United, is called Avram.

I didn't know any of this at all.

Maya Angelou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Angelou). Who wrote seven autobiographies.

First one covers the time up to when she was 17. Apparently she was raped aged 8 by her mother's boyfriend; she told her family and the guy got one day in jail for it. Her uncles killed him within days of his release. She saw the power of her words and didn't speak for five years. Not your average autobiographical story.

To be honest, it's a name I knew but had no idea who she was really.

Ack. Bottom was simply brilliant, one of my favourite every comedies. The Young Ones was more patchy but had brilliant moments.

RIP Rik.

There's an episode of Bottom in which they find a video camera, and use it with hilarious side-effects, that made me laugh as much as anything else I've ever seen.

One of the greatest footballers of all time, Alfredo di Stefano, has died. One player winning 5 European Cups (Champions Leagues) and scoring a goal in every of those finals, not sure we will ever see that again!

Not to take away from an obvious great. He was blessed to play in an era when the EC wasn't taken too seriously.

RIP.

I remember when I was younger and all the debate was over Maradona was as good as Pele and my Dad would always say that "Maradona was barely as good as Di Stefano. Pele doesn't some into the reckoning."

I found this part in Gareth Bale's tweet about di Stefano just disingenuous.

"Don Alfredo was an inspiration to me"

Bale is only 24, it is quite likely he never of him until recently cause he was rarely ever mentioned in the British media and when he was growing up between late 90s and early 2000s, it was always Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Platini etc.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he was President of Georgia (or in equivalent posts) from 1992 to 2003. He was forced to retire in 2003 as a consequence of the bloodless Rose Revolution.

He was conscripted according to the NYT - http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/22/business/karl-albrecht-a-reclusive-founder-of-aldi-dies-at-94.html?_r=0 . Maybe there's more to it (I honestly don't know), but the Wehrmacht was the regular army, unlike the SS for instance, and a lot of ordinary Germans were called up.

This, in general response to the insulting garbage from idiots like Brazil, is a worthwhile read: http://www.theguardian.com/science/brain-flapping/2014/aug/12/robin-williams-suicide-and-depression-are-not-selfish?CMP=fb_gu

News of Robin Williams’s death due to apparent suicide, said to be a result of suffering severe depression, is terribly sad. But to say taking your own life because of such an illness is a ‘selfish’ act does nothing but insult the deceased, potentially cause more harm and reveal a staggering ignorance of mental health problems....
