He joined Wednesday at the same time as Simon Donnelly but neither alas made much of an impact in an ailing Wednesday side. Shocking news: you just never know what's around the corner. Not sure what Donnelly is currently or whether he's still playing.

More of a personal one, seeing as I knew him, but Phillip Hogarty is the first road crash victim (http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/0101/rta.html) of 2008. Chairman of the Irish Chess Union and one of the top players in Ireland (http://www.icu.ie/ratings/list.php). I even beat him back when he was slightly nearer my strength. Used to go there a lot in my "Leeson Street" night club days. Sad day for Dublin losing a landmark like that for some characterless apartments.

He was brilliant in I Went Down and I remember him making a hilarious appearance in the Father Ted Eurovision episode.

Arse. It was bound to happen, he was in drug trouble this last 2/3 years. He did some fantastic films as a child actor, and although he had recently slipped into tv guest spots, he was almost certain to rehabilitate his career with his part in Bret Easton Ellis' "The Informers" , currently shooting with Billy Bob Thornton & Mickey Rourke.

Yeah, I checked out his movie credentials on IMDB and he managed to rack up some amount of films despite doing a stint in prison.

You're absolutely right sligoman. I'm probably thinking of his time in rehab and not the jail time. He was handed down a jail sentence which was suspended provided he'd enroll in a 18 month to 3 year outpatient program (just reading what's out there).
Between 2001 and 2006 he only starred in 11 productions...Nothing listed for 2007...

How and ever, good actor gone too soon. RIP

Poor aul Bobby. Chess genius and all round...em...interesting character. Once locked himself in a room and refused to play a World championship game because the cameras were making too much noise. I think it was him who accused a Soviet opponent of colluding with coaches by picking up radio signals in his teeth during a game? Had a warrant put out for his arrest by playing a re-match of the 72 World Championship in Yugoslavia just to spite the US (he still won, despite not having played in almost 20 years).

The world's a duller place this evening.

Yeah, I think the world of rabidly anti-Semetic Jewish chess players who fought the commies and thought 9/11 was "wonderful news" is a fairly exclusive club alright

The rants are not exactly what he should be remembered for. It was clear to anybody who saw him the few times he was "interviewed" on TV that he was mentally ill in a serious way. He was akin to a Bang Bang type eccentric ranting non stop about the effin USA and effin Jews.
He was off his rocker.

He was the best ever chess player in the world.
When he was more sane (or less insane) in 1972 he blazed his way to the world title by trouncing 3 of the top 10 grandmasters. This was unheard of. The final series against Spassky was never off the world headline news.
This is a documentary uploaded to YouTube
Fisher spassky docum part1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gO5Cro1qUE)
Other parts of it are linked there.
As controversial as the 1972 they were surpassed by the 1978 games. Fischer paranaoia about the Soviet dirthy tricks was well justified.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

The Maharishi became well-known in the 1960s
The most flamboyant of the self-styled Indian gurus to emerge from the Woodstock era, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was a man of charisma, energy and untold riches, credited with setting the Beatles and other stars on the path to spiritual enlightenment.
