4th round of Europa League is potentailly very lucrative
Or you could get Hertha Berlin or Steaua Bucharest. Neither of which was particularly lucrative

any idea how much TV money you got for the Hertha game ? crowd wasn't big for that but KO time (5pm) didn't help

what happened to rovers wearing there new jersey for the europa league???
That jersey is for cup competitions where there is a clash in colours, there was no clash in colours last night.
I wonder will Juventus's jersey clash?

if fingal could come through somehow you'd fancy the against honka/bangor.
You would indeed. Both teams are extremely beatable
Maritimo match highlights here (bad blunder for their 2nd):

Of course the Israelis are going to be big favourites, and it'd pretty much need a huge upset for us to progress. We had a few half chances, but not Irish teams always do and never seem to put them away (Pats v. Berlin at the RDS last time) not because of bad luck, but because we're just not as good technically as the teams who can finish those easy chances. Still, its a game of football. There's nothing to stop us getting a dodgy penalty in the 1st minute and cling on for dear life. Apparently the ref is going to be French, they owe us something. We go in hope not expectation, and after what happened to Dundalk last night I'm happy enough to be going with at least hope.
Was at the match last night. Thought Rovers did a lot of the basics as well, if not better than the Israelis. I reckon they have a 1 in 4 chance of progressing.
Were they to draw Juventus, Italian teams are notoriously slow starters in Europe, esppecially with a World Cup hangover.

Because Shams are the scumiest club in Ireland and Fingal are cheats and they dont understand LOI football
You are a sad bunch up in Sligo!

Were St. Pat's at home or away first in those ties against Hertha and Steaua?

Can you imagine Juve coming to Tallaght?? A team thats been involved in match fixing down the years and bribing refeeres and a negative style of play might get to the play the Italian giants!
Yes Jim, yes he did.

Fair point

Not much. Loads of German teams in action that week and ours clashed with the group stages of the Champions League too. Rights were bought by a German cable channel (kinda like 3e here) and they showed both legs live. Don't get me wrong, we did OK from the 2 european runs but it was nowhere neare the cash cow some believe

fair point, big games seem to be getting around 5,000 not filling the 5,700 capacity
could have some sell outs before the end of the season (home v Bohs, possible cup semi final, possible Juve game)
suppose its a trade off - every so often they will lose money (would have gotten 10,000 + for Bohs game last season)There's nothing wrong with the occasional sell-out either. A game being reported as sold out always adds to the hype and prompts more people to buy season tickets to make sure they have tickets for these big games.

Bohs / Fingal would be unseeded - they would play one of the 37 seeded teams
look who those seeded teams are likely to be - Liverpool, Porto, CSKA Moscow, PSV Eindhoven, Juventus, Sporting Lisbon, Olympiacos, Stuttgart, Galatasaray, Dortmund, Napoli, Leverkusen, Paris SG, Celtic, Mallorca, Palermo, Besiktas, Man City, Feyenoord, AEK Athens, Aston Villa
there's about a 50/50 chance of getting one of them - any of those ties would be a big money spinner and imagine Liverpool, Man City, Aston Villa or Juventus (with Aviva available)
Would be a shame to see Liverpool or Man City knocked out so early but I could live with it!

Dont see why Shams are not in with a great chance. Yes, it will be difficult, but with a potential tie against Juve they should not lack for incentive ! Showed they can score against Israelis so why not nick an away goal ??
Great draw for Bohs IF we can finish off TNS. cant see us beating Andelectht but should be a good tie and we should make a few bob (IF......).
Good draw for FIngal in that they would have a realistic chance of progression - great result last night especially as they are "new" to Europe.

agreed
and if you're getting 3,500 - 4,000 most games its better to have them in a smaller stadium too - looks better on TV, better atmosphere

If I'd never seen either team before, or knew their respective leagues I'd be inclined to agree the tie is still very open. But we're an Irish team. How many years now have we created a big chance in a game only for a player to panic (Twigg last night for instance, Pats at home to Hertha, Robinson away to Kiev in the last second). It just seems we don't have the technical skills, and winning pedigree to get through in these games. All will be revealed next week though, you never know.
The Isrealis aren't the same level of Kiev or Hertha in fairness (both in terms of quality or the round in which the game was played)
Pats knocked ut a Russian side last year too (at the same round Rovers would face Juventus). Wasn't a breakthrough though.
I still think Irish teams are "punching above their weight" but we'll see how the ties finish to see if the level can be maintained

I agree Bnei Yahuda aren't as good as those teams, but the prize on offer will be huge and it will still be a bloody big ask, especially in 40 degree heat. But aren't we now in the round that you beat the Russians? (did we not receive a bye for the round that you played the Maltese in?)

Nope, Valletta was the Second Qualifying Round too.

Nope, Valetta beat an icelandic team in the first round (Same round as Dundalk beat the Luxembourgs and last year Sligo lost to the Albanians).
We were seeded in the 2nd round so played the winners of that game. Same round as you played them Israelis
Then the Russian in the 3rd round (They were drawn to play the winners of Pats v Valetta as we were unseeded).
Unseeded in 4th round and lost to Steaua.
The year before we played Olimps in first round (there was no prelim), then Elfsborg i second before playing Hertha in final play off.
I think that Bohs got the best draw they could have asked for all round. Facing any of the teams we could have faced would most likely lead to elimination from the competition anyway so to draw Anderlecht which amounts to a good attraction, good TV money and a deadly away trip for fans is probably the best all round. Our chances of progressing are slim, our only hope being if they underestimate us as much as RBS did last year. It would still take 2 stellar performances to progress which im not sure this years team is capable of.
Superb protential ties for Fingal (in order to progress) and obviously Rovers (big big draw). I think both teams are up against it in terms of progressing to the next round either way. Rovers needed to keep a clean sheet at home and i think Maritimo will not underestimate Sporting Fingal next week.
On D. Chisinau - did a LoI team not face them before?? Oh no wait, that was their rivals Zimbru Chisinau.... and it was St. Pats.... and it was.... :)

Think I'll go to Dalymount for the Anderlecht game if Bohs get past TNS. I've been following their results for a few years now.
I'd love to see Lukaku play in person.

Am I right in saying....:
If Bohs get through against TNS, but lose to Anderlech, they're in Europa League Group stages?
Shams and Fingal need to go through this round, then have to get past (respectively) Honka/Bangor and Juve to reach Europa Group stages?

Unfortunately not, there's another Europa League round before the group stage for everyone. If Bohs beat TNS and Anderlecht and lose the next round, they're into the Europa League group stage.

No.
If bohs were to beat tns and lose to anderlecht, they'd be in the final qualifying round of the europa league - for which the draw has yet to be made.
If they were to beat anderlecht they'd be in the final round of cl qualifiers. Losing there they be parachuted into group stages of europa league.
And in the Europa league Finglas have to beat Maritimao, then Honka/Bangor then some one in the 4th round
Likewise Rovers have to beat the Israelis, then Juve, then another team in the 4th round

We get to the third qualifing round and we get a poxy team from Russia no one has ever heard of and if Rovers get there they get Juventus, Clearly an FAI conspiracy to let their model club get some revenue
(sits back and waits for Sligo fans to agree and go off their nut)

If it was anyone else posting this I'd know it was serious :)
Anderlecht are not going to be as big a challenge as many are thinking, they're kind of another up in the air side (in terms of club destination), Dundalk had a serious chance but blew it, while Rovers were always up against it. I'd love to see at least one side qualify for the Europa League Group stage, could be two if all goes right. But Juve for Rovers! Still in shock, I'll be home and away for that!

I know youre a Rovers fan but you understand the concept of a bit of no harm slagging, surely? Did you miss the smiley at the end? Did you miss the post where i explained that, apologised, and actually pointed out how well they had done since? And finally, you need to stop getting outraged on behalf of St. Pats fans. :good:

Not the keepers greatest night. Where did they get the ball from mind?
its a jabulani apparently - i read somewhere that all the balls used in the Europa games were jabulani but not the ones used in the Champions League.
Last time i remember an orange ball was a snowy day in the third round of the FA Cup back in the 80's sometime... it looks weird now.

Lads,
in terms of co-efficient points - we need Bohs to win on Tuesday night ....... Dundalk to get something out of their game ( a draw would be nice ). I hope Sporting can get the win to progress and that would really boost the co-efficient and more could follow in the next - little bit worry that the last minute goal could haunt them..... Shamrock i think will failed in the heat over there in the second leg .....but hope i'm wrong
