Just to change the subject, it was boring, I was in Jackman Park Limerick with Mayo U-18 lost 6-0 not to worry.
But alarm bell did ring having talked to the Limerick Junior Chairman, asked what it cost to put teams into there league. €300 per team compared that with Mayo
€300 1 €600 2 Mayo 1 €1900 2 €2500 insult to injury Registration in Limerick €3
Mayo €15
Where did we go wrong.

Well done to Ryan Connolly (ex Ballyglass) on being part of the Ireland U-16 team that beat Italy 1-0 in the Malta tournament. He also set up the only goal with a cross. It's good to see him become a regular at international level following in the footsteps of David Joyce.

Tidim goal gives Ireland U16s victory over Italy

Under-16 Malta friendly tournament

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Italy
Tidim 67

The Republic of Ireland Under-16 recorded victory against Italy on Sunday in their first fixture of the Malta International tournament.

Selcuk Tidim’s struck the only goal of the game with 13 minutes remaining, putting the finishing touch to a flowing move that involved Shane Murray, Oliver Kelly and Ryan Connolly.

The FC Pauli striker connected with Connolly’s cross from the left, giving the Italian goalkeeper no chance.

The goal was Tidim’s fourth in his past four matches after the German-born striker declared for Ireland through his mother.

His rich vein of form began on his debut against Belgium and he followed that up with a goal in each of the matches against Israel.

Ireland’s main threat in the first half came through centre-back Mark O’Brien. Twice the Cherry Orchard defender got the better of his marker in the box from corner kicks but he saw one of his headers saved and the other angle over the crossbar.

Tidim was presented with a great chance to break the deadlock, also in the first half, but contrived to blast his close-range shot over the bar following another teasing centre by Connolly.

More chances were spurned by Oliver Kelly and Shane Murray in the second half but it was left for Tidim to secure the victory on 67 minutes.

Irish manager Vincent Butler (pictured left) said in the aftermath of the win. “It was very pleasing performance and all the players did the jobs they were asked to do.

“Selcuk came up with another goal for us and, in the end, we could have won the game by a larger margin.”

Butler has guaranteed the seven players not in the line-up against Italy a starting place in the team which meets Malta on on Tuesday. Ireland will complete their group on Thursday by playing Turkey, who defeated Malta 2-0 in the other group game played on Sunday.

Ireland: Ciaran Gallagher (Castlefin), Leigh Swords (Belvedere), Daniel Joyce (Belvedere), Mark O'Brien (Cherry Orchard), Anthony O'Connor (Kilreen Celtic), Sean Stewart (St. Kevin’s Boys), Shane Murray (Arklow Town), Sean Skelly (Belvedere), Ryan Connolly (Derby County), Oliver Kelly (Reading), Selcuk Tidim (FC St.Pauli).
Substitutes: Daniel Fitzsimons (Millwall) for Swords (65 mins) and Anthony Bolger (St. Kevin’s Boys) for Bolger (75 mins).

Note: International matches played from Under-17 downwards consist of two 40 minute halves.

Just came across an old telegraph yesterday and was looking at the sports section. Their was a picture of Pat Tierney(Mc Carthys bar) getting some award for "Mountgable Celtic". I dont remember this club but im told they existed somewhere on the cong-clonbur border.
It got me wondering, what other clubs took part in the Mayo league that folded, where were they from and why did they not survive??
Anyone add to this list or profile the "forgotten" clubs below. Eg, years in exsistance, location, reasons for folding

Thanks in advance

Mountgable celtic??
Quay Hearts ??
Cornboy utd ??
Balla Fc ??
Shrule ??
Shraigh
Newport
Ballyhaunis
Parkside
Doonvier Swifts

I seem to recall that we had Castlebar Utd, and Barcastle in Castlebar at different stages. We also had Shraigh Utd, Dooniver Swifts and Parkside from Ballina. I am sure that there were others but cannot remeber now. Newport had a side also along with Ballyhaunis.

Mountgable Celtic were based in Corr na Mona between Clonbur and Maam in Galway. They played for a few years and were quite successful climbing the divisions and winning the Chadwicks cup (or whatever it was called then). Basically they were based around a successful GAA team and when that began to break up (because of age and commitments) Mountgable fell apart.

Played for Shrule in the late 70s early 80s. Long time ago but I remember a fellow called Frank Heneghan played centre half. Also a guy called Jimmy Kelleghan, a striker, who scored a hat-trick on a pitch on the beach in Achill. I also remember Balla had a team with an absolutely brialliant goalkeeper. what was his name? Pitches and dressing rooms were very basic in them days. Thank god things have improved. Hats off to the Mayo League officials!!! By the way I also played in the Mayo league in 2006.

It has probably been the worst year for called off fixtures. Not that the past few years have been much better. The gaps between games have been horrendous. The majority of these have been due to unavoidable circumstances. However the connaught and Fai cups take precedent over junior league fixtures at the end of the season causing the most important time of the year to be put on hold. Would it not now be more appropriate to start the league the first week of March and have most elements tied up before the external cups begin. That way clubs who want to can concentrate on that aspect while lower leagues are not effected? Games should be constant and regular like any normal league!

Yawn!! Hasnt this b and c team argument been flogged to death? It would make no difference. If a clubs first team is good enough it will get past another clubs b or c team on its way up the leagues. If it cant, then that team has found its level. (3 c teams by the way):ball:

And this! how does an 8 team division improve things? 18 games a year is hardly a long season as it is. How is 14 games going to help a team?
and even playing every team 3 times a season will push it to 21 games, and make every team sick of the sight of one another, or embarras a stuggling team for 7 more games
What is wrong with keeping it as it is? Always has been 10 teams in the top division and never a problem before.:ball:

Agreed. What is the thinking behind this? It just seems like a pointless, knee-jerk reaction without any necessity behind it. Every year they seem to get the urge to re-brand and re-shuffle without any discernible improvement. One thing's for sure; the Mayo League have to instruct clubs of their intentions at the start of a new season, rather than spring them on them towards the end of one...

Would a reserve league not create it's own problems too? There are currently 14 reserve teams in the league (including the only c team, Westport. Wherever Hardcore got 3 I don't know), and establishing a 13-14 team league would prove problematic in terms of the season's length, especially considering they think a ten-team league is too much.

What's the major malfunction here? Why fix what's not broken? The rules should be clear; two teams up and two down as long as they are not going into a division where the club have another team. That's only fair. The third team from bottom playing the third from top is just ****ing around, especially if the 'third team from top' is seventh in the league. If you don't finish in the top two then forget about promotion.. I know that that would mean neither Kilmore or Fahy would have gone up last time, but i think that's the way it should have been done personally.

That's just my opinion, what do other people think? I know I'm repeating myself, but the Mayo league waiting to see what happens and then deciding is a total and utter disgrace and shows blatant disrespect for the clubs involved. If Bangor and Swinford finished 1-2 in the Premier and say, Celtic were to finish second from bottom in the Super do you really think they would send them down now???? Not likely.
