I see in the paper that Mark Rowland has taken over as Manager of celtic Super League side. Good luck to him and fair play for taking the Job however it is a sign of the continuing waining interest in the super league when a club like celtic cant attract a manager with credentials. Fahy where in the same boat last year and Snugboro are currently searching among other clubs Im sure. Also Harry Jennings has stepped down as assistant at Celtics A league side. So, is this a case that football as a game in this county is taking a beating or is it a case of a general lack of interest of former players to get involved in coaching and Management?
We have already seen a lack of commitment from players at clubs and towards training and general commitment so is the game in decline in the county at present?
Discuss..........

Harrys still there was taking to him yesterday

Good Luck to Mark, on taking on a task which I would believe to be a struggle for him as he would find it hard like previous managers before him.
First of all he lacks experience in management.
handing those who stand on the line who will give him a hard time him when things don't go well
also not getting the players as a result of A league.
Should he be left alone get on with the job who knows what he could achieve

How many clubs are without managers?

Any word on who mite be filling these gaps?
Why are these clubs out of manager's would it have been during the credit boom, these clubs had extra cash to spread around who these clubs.

Killala 1 - 2 Ballyhaunis

Giggs missed a penalty in the first couple of minutes, we had 2 clear penalties that the ref did not give us in the first half, their keeper pulled off a couple of great saves in the first half. Gave away a very bad goal when the ball squirmed under our keeper's body, a goal down at HT. They got a secound on the break finaly pulled a goal back through Malloco but could not a secound. The end of one of the most sucessful seasons in the club history, first league title in 25 years and beaten cup-finalsts, U14 boys won Division 3 title and in the last 8 in the Connaught cup, the U16's boys are in the last 8 of the Connaught shield, the U17's girls won the Mayo league cup, Lacken Cross Voc. school senior girls won an All Ire. senior title. Aileen Gilroy played in a European final and the Quarter final of the World Cup for the Irish U17 womens team. Off the pitch we won the FAI club of the month for May and had 6 players on different teams of the season.

word is the league will start now in may instead of its usual mid April kick off because of the smaller leagues. With 14 league games and 2 cup games it would finish some time in early September. Anyone hear this. Prob not a bad idea as would mean consistent games.

10/01/2011, 10:40 AM
There prob wont be any confirmation on this till a week before the season starts!! Are any clubs back pre-season yet? If the league doesnt start till May there's plenty of time to get started.

I heard rumours that the leagues will be 7 a side this season and the goalkeepers must play with their hand and feet bound, in order to make more goalscoring chances. Come to think of it much like the oscar traynor team played.

Suppose its to be expected with football in mayo at a min this time of year. seemed to be a strong squad on hand, with some quality westport players on the bench.

I tought that at the last delegate meeting it was put off to the new year if teams would play eachother 2 or 3 times so i can't see where this speculation on mid-April or early May start is coming from.

Lads,

Celtic are out of the Newstalk A Championship so they now have a strong team for the super league this year. Sounds like Kilkelly does not know whats happening at the club as just before the xmas, he was on about how he was planing for the A league and now they not in it!!!!

Celtic are indeed pulling out of the A Championship. Its just not viable at present. The FAI aren't helping matters either as nobody even knows if its going ahead this year or not. So there might not even be an A Championship for them to pull out of but bottom line is the clubs senior A side will be playing in the mayo league next year. Whether its good for Celtic (to return to mayo league football and perhaps enter the league of ireland again when the structure of the league becomes more definite) only time will tell but expect a serious title tilt from Celtic this season.

If ye can hold on to the A-League squad then no doubt ye'll give the league a good go. the fact the A-League structure seems to be up in the air then it might be the right choice to pull out and not land a load of money into something that might end next year.

It's sad to see a club pull out but can't blame them. The A Championship is not an attractive league to be in. 16 games is too few and as said by pav, the FAI are not helping matters.

Fair play to celtic on both counts. It was ambitous for them to want to bring LOI football to castlebar so hats off for that. Eventually the Premier LOI will become a 16 team league its only a matter of time then Celtic will have a chance to Join the LOI first Division which will gain far more interest. Think its a wise move for them to come back to the MAyo league and it will gain far more interset in the Super league. Love them or hate them everyone wants celtic in the MAyo league. Its not the same without them. :o

First or second week in april now confirmed. So 14 league games plus two definate cup games is 16 weeks. April,May,June,July. But given the fact that no cup games are to be played Mid week it will allow 4-6 weeks for cup games inbetween.Ie ending in August mid september. So if you get knocked out of the cups there will be no consistancy of games with some weekends being completeley devoted to them. Why Oh why did they change it and for what

Why no mid week games? is this just a way to drag out the season to keep the bigger clubs in tune for the con & fai cups????

Well with a shorter season they have to stretch it somehow. Plus In all fairness the league are not totaly to blame. Most clubs are always moaning about midweek fixtures eg "Oh we gotta go to Erris and Lads cant get off work". Personaly I like an old mid week kick about!

Who would make 'other' LOI clubs?

Well P Drevins has left for Mervue Utd and with the state galway united are in they'd take anyone who could kick a ball so maybe a few of the celtic lads that are in college in galway might think about signing for their A-league/U-20 team with the hope of progressing to the first team.

And no, none of celtics A league players from last season can play in the connacht/fai junior cups as they are effectively last years competetions and those players were registered to play in the League of Ireland last season, not mayo league

Did anyone see the bit in the paper today about Jimmy Blake getting the threatening letter?? What kind of **** does that? Personally I have great time for Jimmy but someone would want to cop themselves on with that kind of childish behavior. If you have a problem with a ref say it to their face or as Ive said a million times on here before ...put on the black shirt on yourself and do better!!!

What paper was it in, if its true it would digust the majority of soccer people. Over the years i am sure he had many run-iins with people as a referee with his style of refereing. I know we felt he cost us a place in an under 14's girls School girls final when he failed to send the opposition keeper off in a professional foul. But over the years never had any personel grudges. Another thing what was his refereing nickname.

To be fair I don't think there is any time of the year when a letter of this nature is not "strange".

More then likely a few donkeys with f*ck all else for doing.

It's regretable all the same that a good football person should be subject to this sort of daftness.

'Strange time of the year to be sending something like that or did he get it during the season.'

What's strange to me is that this threatening letter was sent to the Referee's Assessor.
I might be way off the mark here, but why would anyone send a threatening letter to an Assessor??
Maybe that someone got a poor assessement !!

Celtic Superleague team back in training. Still involved in the Connacht Cup but a fresh start this year would be great. Hopefully we'll have 3 teams competing in Mayo and go for an ambitious domestic league whitewash :)

Celtic v Sligo Rovers this day week, Saturday 12th Feb at 5pm. All are more than welcome. Personally a big fan of Rovers and the way they play their football so I'm delighted they agreed to come and bring the cups!

Here's hoping for a great Mayo League season!
