It would be more ideal if Reading get promoted and Long stays with them as he is more likely to command first team football with Reading than with an established Premiership club.

Lads, the comments on the possibility of Long moving to Everton are interesting. Bonnieshels' commented that it might be best if he sticks with Reading. My concern with this is that Reading will get relegated probably after one season and Long with them. He will then be in the predicament that Bonnieshels also mentions hoping that he gets another premiership club, just like we hope with Kevin Doyle if Wolves gets relegated!

Doyle didn't have to stay with Reading when they were relegated though, and he didn't have to move to Wolves when they went up. I get the impression Long is more ambitious. Long is the type of player who will impress even if he's playing with the worst team in the league so I wouldn't worry about him there. Worst comes to worst, he plays a season with Reading, gets relegated, and finds a decent mid-table club in the Premier League.

Funny how some players get slated for lack of ambition while others get encouraged to show it! Long simply has to move to Everton if they want to buy him.

I don't think this guy is good enough for the Premiership. Too small and easily knocked off the ball.

No. He's not small. He bullied Uruguayan and Slovakian centre backs for Ireland. He's been bullying Championship bruisers all season. No.

I can see him heading to Bolton. Sturridge will be heading back to Chelsea... the opening for that sort of player is there.

There's talk of Bolton wanting to hold on to Sturridge for another season. I suppose it may depend on whether or not there's a clear-out at Chelsea.
BonnieShels
01/05/2011, 5:38 PM
Well they would say that. I'd want to keep Sturridge. I can see Drogba leaving this season. Sturridge will then move back to take up the mantle.

Drogba's going nowhere. Long will get his chance in the Premiership next season one way or the other. If the likes of Jon Walters and Leon Best can get into matchday squads then so can Long.
Looking very lively for Reading this evening. Certainly they would be choice from an Irish point of view to go up.

Definitively. I think that it would be good for him to stay at reading rather than move.

Will he stay with Reading if promoted or you reckon another Premier League club will come in for him?

He's resurrected his goalscoring form at the best possible time. If Reading are promoted he'll stick with them (rightly so). Otherwise he'll move.

We have a growing list of decent penalty takers, might come in handy sometime.

Now if only we could qualify for a tournament to use them.

Long booked on 76 for playing on after the whistle.
EDIT: Long sends Hunt through with a remarkable diagonal pass over the defenders. Hunt pulls at it and hits it past the far post. 80'

cardiff must be wondering what they need to do to ever get promoted.

They should try coming first or second after 46 games or win the play-off final. Works for everyone else.

I suppose Long could play against the North in a week, though I doubt Reading will want to risk him

Bit late coming back to this one but Neil Lennon and Gary Parker were in the stands watching this one. Long has been linked with Celtic recently (as does every Irish player, I know) but perhaps there is a little more in this link than normal.
Charlie Darwin

I really doubt he'd have any interest in Celtic. Lennon just signed one of the Cardiff substitutes, which is probably why he was there.

Possibly, but that deal was done already, so it would be a bit late in the day to start scouting him!
It looks as though Long could have a shot at the EPL (whether with Reading or elsewhere) but I never fancied him at all until this last season where he has shown for both club and country he really does have the talent. Timing is everything and Im sure he wouldnt be rushing to sign for Celtic if they did come in for him but 2 years ago, definitely, and 1 year on the bench or in poor form at a premiership club and it might become a viable option once again.
Long needs to really build on his great season and do it all again, better, if he can.

I think he's better served away from Reading next season regardless. If promoted it'll be a typical promoted club scrappy season either packing the middle lone striker surviving barely, or failing whilst admirably sticking to football principles. Either way he's better served elsewhere. The Liverpool roumer aside, hopefully a consolidated Premiership Club looking to push on to a European spot comes in (Fulham or Bolton or something)... He's nicely positioned for a move to suit himself and Reading. His contract is up in 2012 so he can engineer a move whilst still ensuring a decent enough figure for Reading given his form.

Why would Long want to take a backward step by signing for Celtic. Reading are probably a better team that Celtic.

Shane, as well as Noel Hunt and Ian Harte, in action vs Swansea in the promotion playoff right now. 20 minutes gone, Reading two nil down after a crazy 2 minute spell.

Long was very poor today. Didn't get a kick.
Beaten 4-2, gutted for them, really thought they would get promoted. Will be interesting to see what happens with the likes of Long now this summer.
Long was very poor today. Didn't get a kick.
Seemed like the whole Reading team fell apart for this one, especially Khizanishvili. I'd be hopeful that a Premier League side will pick up Long in the pre-season, he seems good enough to step up. Fingers crossed for him anyway.

I'm sure Wolves will be in for him (and very probably Swansea, Qpr, Everton and Fulham). I can see Hunt getting a move to the Premiership as well.

SL been consistently linked over the last two months with Newcastle and Celtic, with occ. Liverpool, according to the 'BBC Gossip column'.
Everton have no money, so unlikely to be them, unsure about the other 'lesser' PL clubs named.
Noel Hunt would be more likely to go to one of them, but can't see him lasting more than a season or two in the current EPL.

It's been said that there's a £5m deal done in principal with a top half Premier League team. Whether that comes to pass or not is a different story.
