The article says he's an excellent finisher. Really?

Well the above 2nd goal proves he can be. Its just how consistent he can be. Perhaps the journalist just realises that Shane is in a good moment and wants to give praise where praise is due.

I scored a left-footed half volley from 22 yards once, that left the goalkeeper staring at space. I guess all I was lacking was consistency :)
Unfortunately in Long's case I think he is consistent at wasting good chances. Of course, if he becomes the main man and builds up a run of form I think that could change. He clearly has the talent.

On the positive he has gotten himself into the positions needed to waste those chances. On the negative seem to recall a good percentage of those chances not working the goalie.

Perhaps your career as a goalkeeper didn't work out because you spent the whole game hanging around outside the opposition box :)

That goal was after I moved to London. I was 34 and didn't tell anyone I used to be a goalie!
I dislocated my ankle 30 minutes after scoring was carried off and had to go to hospital. In a way I saw it as poetic justice. I had been mad about football for 26 years, but rubbish at it. Then I scored a wonder goal and generally was playing a blinder at centre-back - everything landed on my head that day - and minutes later my career was over, but it was a fitting end. Even the tackle that busted my ankle was when I saw the ball earlier than I normally did. I was admiring my goal-saving clearance heading over the touchline then pain and a large cracking noise when the late tackle came in.
I tried making a comeback aged 37 for Ardee Bhoy's team in Maida Vale but after a couple of games I knew I was flogging a dead horse. Nothing landed on my head, every stray pass resulted in an opposition goal and I was 5 yards too slow.

I guess that's where AB gets his loathing for with defenders who are not Beckenbauer.
from the trauma of witnessing Stutts, past his prime, try to make a comeback.

Tbf, Stutts wasn't as bad as he makes out, albeit a tad slow. Not that I can talk...nor would I compare him or anyone with the 'Der Kaiser', well not that I've managed...
Except one guy who'd previously played for Sarajevo and Bosnia (before they were an independent country)!!

Stutts wasn't as bad as he makes out, albeit a tad slow. Ironically the next time I bumped into AB was on the running track (well, I was on the track, AB was hanging around with some Polish footballers) several years later. I was telling AB I was in training to try and qualify for the World Triathlon Championships to be held later in the year.
I might have been slow over 5 and 10 yards but I'm running 5k in 18 mins these days due to my track work and in September I came 75th out of 113 in the World Championships (for old people) in London, second Irishman of 9 across the line :)

Funny I just read your better educated post before this and now reading this and i find some correlation, I used to do this running on a Thursday with similar worker types in the environs of where I work, and 2 Irish guys were one of the quickest for the 5k circuits and runs. They were doing sub 17 both of them. They mustn't have been running in that race :) They weren't much younger than you....
Always a plug :P
All those germans and poles are all the same anyway!
Stuttgart88
04/12/2013, 7:00 PM
yeah, but were they also swimming and cycling beforehand? :)
"2 Irish were one of the quickest". Siamese twins? 3 legged race?
sub-17 is proper fast though.
Sorry for the error AB. I was guessing at their nationality! Poles, Germans, all the same to be...

After all the hype of the last couple of weeks, we're back to Long faithfully running the channels without a sniff of goal and getting subbed after an hour. I'm sure Liverpool are falling over themselves to make a bid.

Hehe, it's subtle - or perhaps I'm over-reading what is no more than a simple typo - but isn't Stutts wittily alluding to a prospective pan-European super-state?

I know well, I was just pointing out the views held by Stutts in his Ivory Tower.
Whatever about spanish and portugese or french and belgians, or dutch and germans or any south american countries, getting poles and germans who speak and pronounce and look a hell of a lot different...oh I don't know....

Us plebs are in a green slimy ignorant bubble but somehow Stutts gets to live in the Ivory Tower?
Primary school european geography, a european countries quiz. (http://www.lizardpoint.com/geography/europe-quiz.php)
>90% is a good score, was on a good run but ran out of steam down in the Balkans
98% would be an A+ but a standard score for the inveterate follower of Ireland in the qualifiers.
100% means you're lying (probably went to UCD and think that means you should know things, without having the knowing).

100% (But didn't go to UCD)
Never run the 5k in under 21 minutes though, which is probably a more useful skill!

I'm quite sensitive to national differences.
And I'm fully able to tell the difference between a German and a Pole. Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski...clear as day.

Now you can try the USA map and see how you get on :)
I missed Cyprus, thought it was Crete or at least I think it must be Crete.
I thought Montenegro was somewhere between Greece and Dracula country, that James Bond travelled right across the Balkans to get to the Casino Royale?

Got 91%. only got one wrong completely Montenegro but was down to my third guess on a few.
Took a few guesses to get Cyprus, it was almost off the edge the map which threw me, also was careless
with my clicking, on the Czech Republic, should have got it right first time.
Latvia and Estonia were tricky, I know they are up there somewhere near Russia but knowing which is which
is the problem, then the is a bit of Russia cut off up there too, dunno how that happened.
Did better than I though really it's a process of elimination.
Slovakia and Slovenia are easy to get mixed up, unless you remember Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia
and Slovenia is near Italy. I used to struggle with Norway Sweden and Finland at one time.
Also shouldn't Armenia and Azerbaijan be on there?

97 per cent. In other news Shane Long missed a great chance for West Brom a while ago and now Norwich are two goals up. Should've known better than to put him in my fantasy team.

I would certainly struggle to pick out Canadian provinces.
